Chapter 5: The Secret Emma Never Told Ethan
Ethan did not open the envelope.
Not immediately.
He had learned something over the past twelve hours.
Truth did not always bring relief.
Sometimes it destroyed the last comfortable lie you had left.
Diana stood across from him.
Waiting.
“You expect me to believe you?””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
“I expect you to read it.””
Ethan looked at the envelope.
Then at Oliver.
“Go upstairs, buddy.””
Oliver didn’t move.
“Why?””
“Because this is adult stuff.””
The little boy looked at Diana.
Then at Ethan.
“Is she going away?””
Ethan felt his heart ache.
“I don’t know.””
Oliver nodded slowly.
Then he walked upstairs.
Only when he was gone did Ethan open the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Emma’s handwriting.
Again.
His hands became cold.
*Ethan,*
*If you are reading this, then something happened that forced this truth into the open. I hoped it would never be necessary.*
He stopped.
Diana watched him.
He continued.
*I need you to know something about Charles Whitmore.*
Ethan looked up.
Diana lowered her eyes.
He kept reading.
*Charles is not the man he pretends to be.*
The words blurred.
Because Emma was not someone who made accusations lightly.
She hated conflict.
She always looked for the good in people.
For her to write this…
Something had happened.
*He came to me after my diagnosis. He offered to “help” manage our finances while I focused on treatment. I trusted him because he was family.*
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
He remembered.
Charles had offered.
He had called it kindness.
He said Ethan should focus on Emma, not paperwork.
*I later discovered money was missing.*
Ethan stopped reading.
“Money?””
Diana nodded.
“From your company.””
He looked at her.
“How do you know?””
“Because I found the documents.””
“Where?””
“In my father’s office.””
The silence was heavy.
Ethan continued.
*When I confronted Charles, he became angry. He told me nobody would believe a sick woman who was becoming emotional.*
Ethan closed his eyes.
The cruelty of it made his hands shake.
Emma had spent her final months fighting for her life.
And someone had used that against her.
*He told me if I caused problems, he would make sure Ethan thought I was unstable.*
Ethan whispered:
“No.””
Diana looked at him.
“Yes.””
He kept reading.
*I am afraid, Ethan. Not because I think Charles will hurt me physically. But because I know he can hurt the people I love.*
The next sentence made Ethan stop.
*Including Oliver.*
He looked at Diana.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Charles?””
She nodded.
“He controls everything.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe you’re a victim?””
Diana looked away.
“No.””
She whispered.
“I did terrible things.””
That answer caught him off guard.
“I lied.””
She swallowed.
“I wanted this family. I wanted you. And I hated that Emma would always be part of it.””
Ethan said nothing.
“Every time Oliver said her name, I felt like I disappeared.””
“That doesn’t excuse what you did.””
“I know.””
The honesty surprised him.
“I know I was cruel.””
Diana looked at the floor.
“But I never wanted Oliver hurt.””
Ethan remembered the necklace snapping.
He wasn’t sure he believed her.
Not yet.
“Then why break it?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Because Charles told me the necklace contained something.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“He said Emma hid evidence inside it.””
The room went silent.
Diana continued.
“I thought it was just a sentimental thing. I thought if I destroyed it, I could finally stop living in Emma’s shadow.””
Ethan stared.
“You didn’t know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know there was actually something hidden.””
That changed everything.
Because it meant Diana had been manipulated too.
Not forgiven.
But manipulated.
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard.
Ethan turned.
Oliver stood on the stairs.
He had heard enough.
“Did Diana hurt Mommy?””
Diana looked devastated.
“Oliver…”
“No.””
The little boy backed away.
“Did you?””
Ethan moved toward him.
“Buddy.””
But Oliver looked at Diana.
Not with anger.
With sadness.
“You hated her.””
Diana began crying.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked Ethan.
Diana wiped her face.
“I did.””
Oliver looked down.
“Why?””
Diana whispered:
“Because I was jealous of someone who wasn’t even here.””
The confession sat in the room.
Heavy.
Real.
Oliver didn’t answer.
He simply walked back upstairs.
Ethan watched him go.
Then he looked at Diana.
“If you’re telling the truth, prove it.””
Diana nodded.
“I can.””
“How?””
She reached into her purse again.
This time she pulled out her phone.
“I recorded my father.””
Ethan stared.
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
“Why?””
“Because I realized I wasn’t the only person he was using.””
She unlocked the phone.
A recording appeared.
Ethan pressed play.
At first, there was only silence.
Then Charles Whitmore’s voice.
Cold.
Confident.
“You should have taken care of the boy’s necklace sooner.””
Ethan’s blood froze.
Diana’s voice followed.
“I told you I didn’t want to hurt him.””
Charles laughed.
“You already did.””
The recording continued.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
Charles said:
“Once Ethan believes Emma was unstable, the company will be mine.””
Ethan stopped the recording.
His hands trembled.
Because now he understood.
The necklace was never the target.
Oliver was never the target.
Emma’s memory was never the target.
The target was him.
His money.
His company.
His entire life.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man’s frightened voice spoke immediately.
“Mr. Walker?””
“Yes?””
“You don’t know me.””
Ethan frowned.
“Who is this?””
The man hesitated.
Then whispered:
“I worked for Charles Whitmore.””
Ethan stood still.
“What do you want?””
The man took a shaky breath.
“To tell you your wife didn’t die because of her illness.””
Ethan felt the room disappear.
“What did you say?””
The man continued:
“Emma found out what Charles was doing.””
A pause.
Then:
“And someone made sure she never had the chance to expose him.””
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Because after two years of believing he lost his wife to fate…
May you like
He was suddenly facing something much worse.
Someone had taken her from him.
