Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Everything

Thomas arrived two hours later.

I expected an old man.

Someone broken by time.

Instead, a man in his sixties walked into the police station carrying a small folder.

His eyes went directly to Ryan.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Thomas whispered:

“You look like him.””

Ryan froze.

“Like who?””

Thomas looked sad.

“Your father.””

Ryan looked away.

“You knew.””

Thomas nodded.

“I knew everything.””

The anger in Ryan’s face was immediate.

“Then why did you say nothing?””

Thomas accepted the accusation.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Everyone was afraid.””

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“And I was the child.””

Thomas looked down.

“You’re right.””

The room became quiet.

The officer sat across from them.

“We need a complete statement.””

Thomas nodded.

“I’m ready.””

“I came to the house that night because your father called me.””

Ryan frowned.

“He called you?””

“Yes.””

Thomas opened the folder.

“He told me Diane had become unstable.””

My hands tightened.

“What kind of unstable?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Obsessed.””

The word hung there.

“She believed everyone around her needed to depend on her.””

Ryan looked sick.

“She did.””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father discovered she was altering his medication.””

Ryan whispered:

“Like the letter said.””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at him.

“She was making him sick.””

The officer leaned forward.

“Why?””

“Because sick people are easier to control.””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

Thomas continued.

“Your father planned to leave.””

Ryan looked down.

“But he never made it out.””

“No.””

Thomas sighed.

“Diane confronted him.””

I swallowed.

“What happened?””

Thomas looked at Ryan.

“I saw the aftermath.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“I know what I saw.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Ryan looked up.

“You didn’t.””

The room froze.

Thomas continued:

“You saw your father fall.””

Ryan stared.

“But you didn’t see what happened before.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What happened before?””

Thomas opened the folder.

“She pushed him.””

Ryan went completely still.

“I thought…”

His voice broke.

“I thought I caused it.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You were a child.””

A tear fell from Ryan’s face.

“I pushed her away.””

“Yes.””

Thomas nodded.

“But after she grabbed your father, you ran toward them.””

Ryan covered his mouth.

“You remember?””

“I was there.””

The truth finally surfaced.

Ryan hadn’t killed his father.

He had tried to stop the fight.

And Diane had spent decades making him believe otherwise.

The officer looked through the documents Thomas brought.

“Why come forward now?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because I heard what happened to Lily.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“She repeated the cycle.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

A silence followed.

Then Thomas reached into the folder.

“There’s one more thing.””

The officer took the paper.

“What is this?””

“Diane’s notes.””

My stomach dropped.

“More notes?””

Thomas nodded.

“She kept records of everyone she controlled.””

Ryan looked horrified.

“Everyone?””

Thomas handed over another page.

The officer read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at Ryan.

“Your mother wasn’t only monitoring Lily.””

Ryan stood.

“What else?””

The officer slowly placed the paper down.

“She was making plans for custody.””

My heart stopped.

“Custody?””

The officer nodded.

“She believed Emily was unstable and intended to prove Ryan was incapable of parenting.””

Ryan stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas looked grim.

“No.””

He pointed to the page.

“She was building a case.””

I felt dizzy.

The medication.

The notes.

The lies.

It wasn’t about helping Lily sleep.

It wasn’t about being a grandmother.

It was about removing me.

Ryan took the paper.

At the bottom was a final note written by Diane.

A single sentence.

His face went pale.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Ryan looked at me.

Then whispered:

“She wrote that if Emily resisted…”

He stopped.

“Ryan.””

May you like

He looked terrified.

“She had someone ready to take Lily away.””
