Chapter 7: The Night His Father Vanished
I drove home with one thought repeating in my mind.
Ask Ryan.
Not Melissa.
Not Diane.
Ryan.
Because everyone had a version of the truth.
Everyone had a reason to lie.
But Ryan was the person I married.
The person I trusted.
The person who promised me, the day Lily was born, that he would always protect her.
When I arrived at my sister’s house, Ryan was standing outside.
Waiting.
The second he saw my car, he stepped forward.
“Emily.””
I didn’t get out immediately.
I watched him through the windshield.
This man had held me while I cried after my miscarriage.
He had danced with me barefoot in our kitchen.
He had whispered that I was the best thing that ever happened to him.
But he had also kept secrets.
Big ones.
I finally opened the door.
“What happened the night your father disappeared?””
Ryan’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Pain.
“Who told you?””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked away.
“Melissa.””
I nodded slowly.
“Of course.””
“Emily, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You listen.””
I stepped closer.
“I am tired of finding out pieces of my own life from strangers.””
Ryan swallowed.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s the problem.””
The silence between us stretched.
Finally, he whispered:
“My father didn’t leave.””
I waited.
“He died.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“Died?””
Ryan nodded.
“But everyone said he abandoned you.””
“That’s what my mother wanted people to believe.””
“Why?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because she was afraid.””
I crossed my arms.
“Afraid of what?””
Ryan looked toward the street.
“When I was twelve, my father came home late one night.””
The sadness in his voice changed the air around us.
“He was angry.””
“At Diane?””
“Yes.””
Ryan sat on the porch step.
I stayed standing.
“My parents had been fighting for years. I just didn’t understand why.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“That night, I woke up because I heard yelling.””
“What did you hear?””
He closed his eyes.
“My father saying he was leaving.””
I felt a chill.
“Leaving her?””
“Yes.””
Ryan took a shaky breath.
“And my mother said she would destroy him if he tried.””
I stared.
“What happened?””
“I went downstairs.””
His voice became quieter.
“They didn’t see me.””
“I saw my father standing near the front door.””
Ryan looked at the ground.
“He had a bag.””
“A bag?””
“He was leaving.””
My chest tightened.
“And Diane?””
“She was crying.””
I frowned.
“Crying?””
“Yes.””
Ryan looked up.
“That was the strangest part. My mother was never someone who cried.””
He swallowed.
“She begged him to stay.””
I sat beside him.
“Then what?””
“He told her it was over.””
A breeze moved through the trees.
Ryan’s eyes were distant.
“My mother grabbed his arm.””
“Hard?””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he told her to let go.””
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“And then he fell.””
My heart stopped.
“Fell?””
“He hit the stairs.””
The world seemed to slow.
“Ryan…”
“I ran.””
He looked sick remembering it.
“I ran to him.””
“Was he alive?””
A tear slipped down his face.
“For a few seconds.””
I didn’t know what to say.
“My mother told me to call an ambulance.””
I exhaled.
“So why did you say he disappeared?””
“Because after he died, she made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
“That I would never tell anyone what I saw.””
I stared at him.
“Why would you agree?””
Ryan laughed sadly.
“Because I was twelve.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“I was a scared kid.””
He wiped his face.
“My mother told me if people found out, I would lose my family.””
I whispered:
“She manipulated you.””
“Yes.””
“But the police?””
Ryan looked away.
“She told them he left after a fight.””
“And they believed her?””
“There wasn’t enough evidence.””
I felt sick.
“Your father’s death was covered up.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him carefully.
“And Melissa knows?””
Ryan nodded.
“She found out when we were married.””
“Why?””
“She searched old records.””
I stood.
“So Melissa knows your biggest secret.””
“Yes.””
“And Diane knows you know.””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“So everyone has been fighting over the truth.””
Ryan looked at me.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“They’ve been fighting over who controls it.””
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
Not because I didn’t believe Ryan.
Because I did.
And that scared me.
Because if Diane had controlled him his entire life, then maybe she had been preparing Lily to become another version of him.
Quiet.
Obedient.
Afraid.
My phone buzzed at 2:07 a.m.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Emily Carter?””
“Yes.””
“You need to stop asking questions.””
My body went cold.
“Who is this?””
The man ignored me.
“Your husband has already destroyed one family.””
I sat up.
“What are you talking about?””
“You think Diane is the danger.””
A pause.
“She isn’t.””
My heart raced.
“Who are you?””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then a message appeared.
A photo.
My hands started shaking.
It was a picture of Ryan.
Not recently.
Years ago.
Standing beside his father’s grave.
May you like
And underneath it was a message:
*Ask him what happened after the funeral.*
