Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Lies

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

Ryan’s words sat in the air like smoke.

My hand was still holding the notebook.

“Emily?””

I finally spoke.

“What does that mean?””

“Where exactly are you?””

“The kitchen.””

“Leave the house.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Just do it.””

I looked around my home.

The pictures on the walls.

The toys on the floor.

The couch where we watched movies as a family.

Suddenly everything felt unfamiliar.

Like I had been living inside someone else’s story.

“No,” I said.

Ryan went silent.

“I’m done doing what everyone tells me to do.””

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No. You listen.””

My voice shook.

“My daughter was drugged.””

“I know.””

“Your mother kept records about her.””

“I know.””

That answer made me freeze.

“You know?””

A long pause.

Then:

“I found out last week.””

My chest tightened.

“You found out last week?””

“Emily—”

“You found out last week that your mother was tracking our daughter’s sleep and giving her medication, and you did nothing?””

“I was trying to figure it out.””

“You were trying?””

I looked down at the notebook.

“You had a week.””

His voice broke.

“I was scared.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

Because it meant he understood.

He knew.

And he still waited.

“I’m calling the police,” I said.

“Emily, wait.””

“No.””

“Please.””

The desperation in his voice stopped me.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I had never heard Ryan sound afraid before.

“What happened?””

He breathed heavily.

“Mom wasn’t just giving Lily medicine.””

I waited.

“She was trying to make her easier.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Easier?””

“She said you were too attached.””

My stomach turned.

“She said what?””

“She said Lily cried because you spoiled her. She said if Lily became calmer, you would finally have time for the marriage.””

I stared at the notebook.

The dates.

The notes.

The obsession.

“She was trying to change my daughter.””

Ryan didn’t answer.

Because we both knew the truth.

The police arrived thirty minutes later.

Diane arrived before they even finished searching.

She walked through the front door like she still owned the place.

“What is going on?””

I turned.

For the first time, I saw her differently.

Not as my difficult mother-in-law.

Not as an annoying woman who crossed boundaries.

As someone dangerous.

“You tell me,” I said.

Her eyes moved to the notebook in my hand.

And something changed.

Just for a second.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

“You went through my things?””

I almost laughed.

“Your things?””

“This is my son’s house.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“This is my daughter’s home.””

Diane’s face hardened.

“You’re being dramatic.””

A police officer walked into the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Diane looked at him.

“This is ridiculous.””

The officer held up the notebook.

“Can you explain these entries?””

She didn’t answer.

“Ma’am?””

Diane crossed her arms.

“I was helping.””

I felt sick.

“You call that helping?””

“Yes.””

Her answer came immediately.

“She was always anxious with Emily.””

I stared.

“She was two.””

“She was overly dependent.””

“She was two.””

Diane sighed.

“You young mothers don’t understand.””

The officer looked confused.

“Understand what?””

Diane looked directly at me.

“That children need discipline.””

The room went silent.

Then she said the sentence I would remember forever.

“Sometimes love means doing what the mother is too weak to do.””

My skin crawled.

The officer wrote something down.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to come with us and answer some questions.””

Diane’s expression finally cracked.

“No.””

The confidence disappeared.

“No, Ryan will explain.””

Everyone looked toward the doorway.

Ryan stood there.

Pale.

Broken.

But standing.

Diane smiled.

“There you are.””

She walked toward him.

“Tell them this is a misunderstanding.””

Ryan looked at his mother.

And for the first time, he didn’t look like her son.

He looked like Lily’s father.

“I can’t.””

Diane froze.

“What?””

Ryan swallowed.

“I can’t lie for you anymore.””

The room became completely silent.

Then Diane whispered:

“After everything I did for you?””

Ryan closed his eyes.

And I knew there was something else.

Something bigger.

Something he had been carrying alone.

The officer turned to him.

“Mr. Carter, is there anything else we should know?””

Ryan looked at me.

His face filled with regret.

Then he said:

“My mother didn’t just start this after Lily was born.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked at Diane.

May you like

And whispered:

“She did the same thing to me when I was a child.””
