Chapter 5: The Name on the Pharmacy Records

Ryan arrived at the hospital before sunrise.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Like the last twenty-four hours had taken years from him.

“I need to talk to you,” I said.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I handed him the paper the nurse had given me.

His eyes scanned the information.

Then his face changed.

“I don’t understand.””

“You tell me.””

He looked up.

“I didn’t authorize this.””

“But someone did.””

Ryan looked back at the paper.

“The phone number…”

“What?””

He pointed.

“That’s Mom’s number.””

My fingers went cold.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“So she wasn’t just giving Lily your medication.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“She was getting more.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Because neither of us wanted to say it.

The truth was becoming impossible to avoid.

Diane had planned this.

Not one mistake.

Not one bad decision.

A pattern.

The police called later that morning.

They asked us to come to the station.

Diane was still there.

When we entered the interview room, she looked completely different.

The confidence was gone.

But the anger remained.

She looked at Ryan.

“You brought her?””

Ryan stared back.

“She’s my wife.””

Diane laughed.

“No. She’s the reason you’re doing this.””

I stepped forward.

“Excuse me?””

“You were always weak.””

The officer immediately interrupted.

“Mrs. Carter.””

But Diane didn’t stop.

“She changed you.””

Ryan’s face hardened.

“No.””

Diane looked surprised.

“I raised you.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You controlled me.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re choosing her over your own mother?””

Ryan took a breath.

“I’m choosing my daughter.””

For the first time, Diane had no response.

The officer placed a file on the table.

“We found additional evidence.””

Diane looked away.

“Evidence of what?””

The officer opened the folder.

“Medication purchases. Notes. Communication records.””

Diane’s expression shifted.

“What communication?””

The officer looked at her.

“Messages between you and another person.””

Ryan frowned.

“Another person?””

The officer nodded.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

My heart started beating faster.

Because I suddenly understood something.

Diane was too careful.

Too organized.

The notebook.

The schedules.

The medication.

Someone had helped her.

The officer continued.

“We found repeated messages discussing your family.””

Ryan leaned forward.

“With who?””

The officer hesitated.

Then answered.

“Someone named Melissa.””

My blood froze.

Ryan looked confused.

“Who is Melissa?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

And I wished I didn’t.

Melissa was Ryan’s ex-wife.

Not the woman before me.

The woman before that.

The woman he never talked about.

The woman who disappeared from his life after their divorce.

I looked at Ryan.

“You never told me she still contacted you.””

His face changed.

“Emily, she doesn’t.””

The officer looked at the file.

“She contacted your mother frequently.””

Ryan went pale.

“Why?””

No one answered.

The officer slid a printed message across the table.

“It appears they shared concerns about your parenting.””

I read the first line.

My hands started shaking.

“She’s unfit.””

My eyes moved down.

“Ryan needs someone who understands how to raise a child.””

Another message.

“She’s too emotional. She’ll ruin Lily.””

I looked up.

“They were talking about me.””

Ryan looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.””

But this time, I didn’t know if I believed him.

Because how much could one person fail to notice?

How many signs could he miss?

The officer turned another page.

“There’s one more thing.””

He looked at Ryan.

“Melissa requested information about Lily’s medical records.””

Ryan went still.

“What?””

“She wanted access.””

“Why?””

The officer looked at me.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

That evening, we returned home separately.

I couldn’t stay at the house.

Not after everything.

I packed a bag for Lily and myself.

Ryan stood in the doorway watching me.

“Are you leaving me?””

I stopped.

The question sounded less like anger.

More like fear.

“I don’t know.””

He nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.””

I zipped the bag.

“Ryan.””

He looked up.

“I need space.””

“I understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

His eyes filled.

“You don’t understand what it feels like to find out the person you trusted most failed to protect your child.””

He looked down.

“You’re right.””

The fact that he didn’t argue hurt more.

I picked up Lily’s bag.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Emily?””

My body went still.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“This is Melissa.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“I think you deserve to know the truth about Ryan.””

I looked at him standing across the room.

“What truth?””

Melissa was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“Diane didn’t make Ryan afraid of her.””

My heart started pounding.

“What are you talking about?””

Her voice dropped.

“She saved him from something much worse.””

I froze.

“Saved him?””

“Yes.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“From what?””

May you like

Melissa whispered:

“From the secret he buried before he ever met you.””
