Chapter 6: The Secret Ryan Buried
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat in the guest room at my sister’s house, staring at the ceiling while Lily slept beside me.
Every time she moved, I woke up.
Every tiny sound made my heart race.
Because I had learned something terrifying.
Danger didn’t always announce itself.
Sometimes it smiled at family dinners.
Sometimes it brought gifts.
Sometimes it called itself love.
My phone sat on the table.
Melissa’s number was still there.
I wanted to delete it.
I wanted to call her.
I did neither.
Because I was afraid of both options.
At 6:14 a.m., Ryan texted me.
*I need to tell you something before you hear it from someone else.*
I stared at the message.
My first instinct was anger.
My second was fear.
Because every secret in our lives seemed to arrive through someone else’s mouth.
I replied:
*Call me.*
The phone rang immediately.
“Emily.””
His voice sounded broken.
“What did Melissa mean?””
Silence.
Too long.
“Ryan.””
“I didn’t want you to know this way.””
My stomach tightened.
“Know what?””
He exhaled.
“When I was sixteen, something happened.””
I waited.
“I hurt someone.””
The room went cold.
“What does that mean?””
“I mean I made a choice I regret.””
My hand moved protectively toward Lily.
“Ryan, explain.””
“I was angry.””
“At who?””
“My mother.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He continued quietly.
“I found out she had been lying to me my whole life. About my father. About our family.””
I listened.
“And I confronted her.””
“Then what?””
“She pushed me.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“She pushed you?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“I pushed back.””
I stopped breathing.
“How hard?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“Ryan.””
His voice cracked.
“She fell.””
The silence afterward felt endless.
“Was she hurt?””
“Yes.””
My heart pounded.
“How hurt?””
“She went to the hospital.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why have I never heard this?””
“Because my mother told everyone I attacked her.””
A horrible realization formed.
“Did you?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I swear, Emily. I didn’t.””
I wanted to believe him.
I did.
But trust had become something fragile.
Something I couldn’t just pick up and pretend wasn’t broken.
“What happened after?””
“The charges were dropped.””
“Why?””
“Because there wasn’t enough evidence.””
I looked at Lily.
“And Diane used that against you.””
“Yes.””
I understood then.
The fear.
The guilt.
The control.
Diane had spent years reminding Ryan of the worst moment of his life.
She had convinced him he owed her.
“I thought she protected me,” Ryan whispered.
I closed my eyes.
“But she was protecting herself.””
“Yes.””
That afternoon, I met Melissa.
I almost didn’t go.
But I needed answers.
She sat across from me in a quiet coffee shop.
She looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.
She looked tired.
“I know you hate me.””
“I don’t know you.””
She nodded.
“That’s fair.””
I crossed my arms.
“Tell me why you contacted Diane.””
Melissa looked down.
“Because I knew what she was capable of.””
“You worked with her.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked directly at me.
“Of Ryan.””
My body stiffened.
“What?””
Melissa leaned closer.
“Ryan is not the person you think he is.””
My heart sank.
“Explain.””
She pulled out her phone.
“I found something years ago.””
She placed it on the table.
A photo.
An old photo.
Ryan as a teenager.
Standing beside Diane.
And beside them was a man I didn’t recognize.
“Who is that?””
Melissa looked at me.
“Ryan’s father.””
I stared.
“His father died when Ryan was young.””
“No.””
Melissa shook her head.
“He disappeared.””
A chill moved through me.
“What?””
“Diane told everyone he left.””
She pushed the phone closer.
“But Ryan found out the truth.””
I looked at the picture.
“What truth?””
Melissa whispered:
“That his father didn’t leave.””
My fingers went numb.
“What happened to him?””
She looked at me.
“That’s the secret Ryan buried.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Ryan.
Only four words.
*Don’t believe Melissa. She knows.*
I looked up at Melissa.
She saw the message.
And her face went pale.
Because she knew exactly what he meant.
“What does he mean?””
Melissa slowly stood.
“I think you need to ask your husband what happened the night his father disappeared.””
My heartbeat thundered.
May you like
Because for the first time, I wondered if the truth I was chasing would save my family…
or destroy it completely.
