Chapter 9: The Last Lie My Father Left Behind
I held Noah tighter.
The photograph remained on the screen.
My father stood beside Margaret Cole, smiling as though they were attending a family celebration.
Ava was visible in the background.
Except the photograph had been taken three months before her birth.
I looked at Elena.
"Explain.""
She was trembling.
"Your father knew about the pregnancy before we did.""
"How?""
"He had access to the clinic's medical records. He knew the genetic results. He knew what kind of children he wanted.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Why was Ava there?""
"Because the woman holding her in that picture isn't Margaret.""
I stared.
The little girl was too young to recognize clearly.
But the woman beside my father had the same dark hair and facial structure as Vanessa.
Elena stepped closer.
"That's Vanessa.""
I looked toward the security camera.
"Where is she?""
Daniel emerged from the hallway.
"She went to the archive room.""
"Why?""
"She's trying to destroy the original records.""
I looked at Elena.
"Take the children and stay with Peter.""
She grabbed my hand.
"No. I'm coming.""
"Elena—"
"I have spent fourteen months waiting for you to find me. I'm not letting you walk into another room alone.""
I looked at her.
Then I nodded.
We moved toward the archive room.
Daniel led the way.
The corridor opened into a large office filled with filing cabinets and computer servers.
At the center stood a desk.
On it was a thick black folder.
Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.
I approached the folder.
The cover carried my father's initials.
Inside were dozens of medical records.
One document caught my attention.
*SUBJECT A — AVA VALE.*
I opened it.
The report listed her birth date, medical history, and a series of genetic test results.
At the bottom was a note.
Child exhibits the same hereditary marker as Subject N. Both children should remain under observation until the study is complete.
I looked at Elena.
"They tested Ava?""
She nodded.
"Your father arranged routine examinations when she was a baby. I thought they were ordinary pediatric appointments.""
I turned another page.
A transfer authorization appeared.
It listed a private guardian.
Vanessa Cole.
My stomach tightened.
"She was planning to take Ava.""
Elena covered her mouth.
"That's why she moved into the house.""
I looked at the document dates.
The authorization had been prepared eleven months earlier.
Exactly when I met Vanessa.
She hadn't entered my life because she loved me.
She had entered because she wanted access to my daughter.
I turned another page.
Then another.
A handwritten note fell from the folder.
I recognized my father's handwriting.
If Marcus discovers the truth, tell him the children were never intended to remain with him. His emotional attachment will compromise the study.
I crushed the paper.
For years, I had admired my father.
I had believed his success came from intelligence, discipline, and sacrifice.
Now I understood that he had built his empire by treating human lives as assets.
I heard a sound behind the filing cabinets.
A small electronic beep.
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
"That's the archive security system.""
I turned.
"What does it mean?""
"Someone has activated the data purge.""
A timer appeared on the main computer.
02:00.
01:59.
"Can you stop it?""
Daniel rushed to the keyboard.
"I'm trying.""
Elena opened another drawer.
Inside were several flash drives.
"Marcus, look.""
Each drive had a date and a name.
One was labeled:
*VANESSA — ORIGINAL IDENTITY.*
Another:
*MARGARET — MEDICAL HISTORY.*
And a third:
*MARCUS VALE — CONSENT RECORDING.*
I picked it up.
"What's this?""
Daniel stopped typing.
His face changed.
"That's the recording Vanessa mentioned.""
I inserted the drive into the computer.
A video appeared.
It showed my father's office.
I was sitting behind his desk.
My face looked younger.
My father stood beside me.
"Marcus," he said in the recording, "you need to understand that this research will protect our family.""
I watched myself nod.
Then the video jumped.
I was signing a document.
But the image was strange.
My mouth moved without matching the audio.
The recording was fabricated.
I looked at Daniel.
"Can you prove it?""
He nodded.
"The original footage is in the company archive. The timestamps don't match.""
The countdown reached one minute.
Suddenly, the office lights went out.
A red emergency light illuminated the room.
Then the door slammed shut.
Elena grabbed Ava.
"Marcus!""
A speaker crackled.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"You really should have left when I asked.""
I rushed toward the door.
It wouldn't open.
Daniel hit the emergency release.
Nothing happened.
"She's locked us in!""
I turned toward the ceiling.
"Vanessa! Open the door!""
She laughed.
"Why? So you can take my children?""
I looked at the camera.
"Your children?""
"My sister gave birth to one of them. The other should have been mine.""
Elena stepped forward.
"You never wanted children. You wanted control.""
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"You had everything, Elena. A husband. A beautiful home.
Two children. Even after all these years, you still have everything.""
"Not anymore," Elena replied.
"You took fourteen months from me.""
"And you took six years from me!""
The room went silent.
I looked at Elena.
"What does she mean?""
My wife slowly turned toward me.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
Elena looked at the computer.
"Vanessa didn't simply steal Noah. She believed he was her child.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because when we gave birth, she was pregnant too.""
I looked toward the speaker.
Vanessa's breathing became audible.
Elena continued.
"She lost her baby that night. Your father told her Noah could replace the child she had lost.""
My stomach twisted.
"Replace?""
"He convinced her that Noah's genetic results made him special. He told her she could raise him as her own.""
I looked at the screen.
The photograph of Margaret holding Noah appeared again.
Vanessa's voice came through.
"Your father promised me a family.""
Elena shook her head.
"He manipulated you.""
"He gave me something to live for!""
"He gave you a stolen child!""
Vanessa screamed.
Then the computer screen changed.
A new document appeared.
A birth certificate.
I read it.
The name of the child was Noah Vale.
The mother was Elena Vale.
The father was Marcus Vale.
But beneath the document was a second certificate.
It listed a different child.
*SUBJECT M — BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: VANESSA COLE.*
I looked at Elena.
"What is this?""
She stared at the screen.
Then her face crumpled.
"Marcus, I didn't know.""
Daniel moved closer.
The document showed a newborn boy transferred to a private family under a different identity.
The date was six years earlier.
The same night Noah was born.
I looked at the speaker.
"Vanessa, where is your son?""
No answer.
Then a quiet voice came through.
"He's been dead for six years.""
I closed my eyes.
Elena whispered:
"Oh, God.""
Vanessa continued.
"My baby died that night. Your father told me I could have another one. He told me Noah would be mine.""
I gripped the edge of the desk.
"So you blamed Elena?""
"She had everything I wanted!""
"She lost her child too!""
Vanessa screamed.
"She got him back!""
The timer reached ten seconds.
Daniel suddenly shouted.
"I found the override!""
He pressed a key.
The door unlocked.
The countdown stopped.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then a loud crash came from the hallway.
Ava screamed.
I turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway holding a pistol.
Her eyes were fixed on Noah.
"Give him to me.""
I stepped in front of my son.
"No.""
Vanessa raised the weapon.
"You don't understand. He's the only thing I have left.""
Elena moved beside me.
"Your baby wasn't Noah.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"SHUT UP!""
She pointed the gun at Elena.
I lunged.
A shot exploded.
The bullet struck the computer monitor.
Glass shattered across the floor.
Daniel tackled Vanessa.
The gun skidded beneath the desk.
I grabbed Noah and pulled Ava behind me.
Vanessa fought violently, striking Daniel across the face.
Then she broke free.
She ran toward the emergency exit.
Daniel stumbled after her.
I started to follow.
But Elena grabbed my arm.
"Marcus, wait!""
She pointed toward the second certificate.
I looked down.
A name had been written beside the transferred baby.
A name I recognized.
A name that appeared in my father's will.
*BENJAMIN VALE.*
My father's younger brother.
My uncle.
I stared at the document.
"Uncle Benjamin raised Vanessa's baby?""
Elena shook her head.
"No.""
She pointed to the date of death.
The child had been transferred to a family under a new identity.
Then the last page revealed the truth.
The baby had been registered as deceased.
But the death certificate was forged.
And the person who had adopted him was listed as:
*MARGARET COLE.*
I looked toward the hallway where Vanessa had disappeared.
Then I understood.
Margaret hadn't just raised Noah temporarily.
She had raised another child too.
Vanessa's biological son.
And if the documents were real, that child was still alive.
A phone began vibrating on the desk.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke quietly.
"Marcus Vale?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Benjamin.""
I froze.
My uncle.
The man who had supposedly died in a car accident fifteen years earlier.
He continued.
"Your father made one final mistake.""
I looked at Elena.
"What mistake?""
The voice lowered.
"He thought he had buried every secret.""
A pause.
"But I'm the one who raised Vanessa's son.""
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"And that boy is standing right behind you.""
I slowly turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
His face was pale.
He looked at the phone.
Then at me.
And whispered:
"Marcus... I'm sorry.""
The call disconnected.
I stared at Daniel.
He lowered his head.
Then he said:
"Vanessa is my daughter.""
The entire world seemed to stop.
And suddenly, every betrayal made sense.
But there was still one question.
May you like
If Daniel was Vanessa's father...
Who had been raising Noah's brother?
