Chapter 6: The Boy in the Photograph
The countdown reached six minutes.
I didn't waste another second.
"Daniel, show me the maintenance corridor.""
He rushed toward a narrow steel door at the end of the hallway.
I carried Ava while he entered a security code.
The door opened with a heavy mechanical groan.
Beyond it was a cramped passage lined with pipes.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
A deep mechanical vibration shook the walls.
"Where does this lead?"" I asked.
"To the original basement. Your father built it before the mansion was renovated.""
"Can we get Elena out through here?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not from this side. The observation room has a separate locking system.""
I looked back toward Elena.
She was watching us through the glass.
"Marcus!""
I rushed back.
"What?""
She pointed toward the floor.
"There!""
I followed her finger.
A small metal panel was embedded beneath the observation chair.
"That's the manual release.""
Daniel turned pale.
"That panel isn't connected to the maintenance corridor.""
Elena nodded.
"Your father installed it before Vanessa took control. He told me it was an emergency exit.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Can we open it?""
He hesitated.
"Possibly.""
"Do it.""
Daniel moved toward the panel.
He crouched and examined the locking mechanism.
"There's a secondary power supply. I need something metal to bridge the contacts.""
I searched the corridor and found a screwdriver inside a maintenance cabinet.
Daniel removed the panel cover.
Sparks flashed.
The alarm grew louder.
"Come on," I muttered.
The lights flickered.
Then the observation room door clicked.
Elena grabbed the handle.
It moved.
She pulled.
The door opened several inches.
I rushed forward.
She stepped through.
For one second, we simply stared at each other.
Then she collapsed into my arms.
I caught her.
Her body felt frighteningly light.
Her fingers gripped the back of my shirt as though she was afraid I might disappear.
"You're here," she whispered.
I held her tighter.
"I'm here.""
She pulled back and touched my face.
"I thought I'd never see you again.""
I kissed her forehead.
"I'm sorry.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You didn't know.""
"I should have found you.""
"No. They made sure you couldn't.""
Ava stepped forward.
"Mommy?""
Elena looked down.
Her expression broke.
"Oh, my baby.""
Ava ran into her arms.
Elena sank to her knees and held her daughter, crying into her blonde curls.
"I missed you so much.""
Ava wrapped her arms around Elena's neck.
"I knew you weren't gone.""
Elena kissed her cheeks repeatedly.
"I know, sweetheart. I know.""
I watched them for a moment.
Fourteen months.
Fourteen months of empty chairs, unanswered questions, and bedtime stories that ended with Ava asking when Mommy would return.
Now she was home.
But our son was still missing.
I gently touched Elena's shoulder.
"We need to find Noah.""
She nodded.
"Vanessa has him.""
"Where?""
"She moved him to the old clinic two days ago.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"I know the location.""
I turned.
"Then we're going.""
Daniel looked toward the security camera.
"Marcus, we need to be careful. Vanessa controls the outer security gates.""
I looked at him.
"You've helped her enough.""
He accepted the words without protest.
We moved through the maintenance corridor.
At the end was a concrete staircase leading toward the old basement.
Elena walked slowly, leaning against my arm.
I noticed bruises around her wrists.
I stopped.
"Who did this?""
She looked away.
"Vanessa.""
My jaw tightened.
"What did she do to you?""
"She wanted the location of the original medical records. She believed your father had left copies somewhere in the mansion.""
"Did you find them?""
Elena nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
She looked at Ava.
"Inside her bedroom.""
I remembered the hidden compartment.
"The photograph?""
"Part of it.""
Elena continued walking.
"Your father kept a complete archive of the children transferred through the clinic. He called them confidential placements.""
"How many?""
"Thirty-two.""
I stopped.
"Thirty-two children?""
She nodded.
"Some were adopted legally. Others were transferred without their parents' consent. Vanessa handled the arrangements.""
I felt sick.
"And Noah?""
"Your father ordered him to be placed with a family that would allow him to be monitored.""
"Why?""
Elena hesitated.
"Because he believed Noah inherited something unusual from your family.""
I remembered Daniel's explanation about the genetic condition.
"Was our son sick?""
"No.""
She looked at me.
"He was healthy. But the tests showed he had a rare neurological marker that your father believed could be used for his research.""
I clenched my jaw.
"So he stole our son for an experiment.""
Elena nodded.
"Vanessa became obsessed with him. She believed she could use the research to secure a permanent position in your father's organization.""
"And after my father died?""
"She kept everything going.""
We reached the bottom of the staircase.
Daniel opened a door.
Beyond it was a dusty storage room filled with old furniture and boxes.
At the far end stood a second exit.
He unlocked it.
Cold night air rushed inside.
We emerged behind the mansion, near the service road.
A black SUV was parked beside the trees.
Daniel tossed me the keys.
"Take this.""
I stared at him.
"Why are you helping now?""
He looked at Elena.
"Because I can never undo what I did.""
I wanted to tell him that wasn't enough.
Instead, I opened the passenger door.
Elena climbed inside with Ava.
I turned toward Daniel.
"You're coming with us.""
He nodded.
We drove toward the outskirts of the city.
The old clinic stood beyond an abandoned industrial park. Its windows were dark, and weeds covered the parking lot.
As we approached, I noticed a security vehicle near the entrance.
Daniel pointed toward a side road.
"There's a loading entrance.""
I parked behind an old warehouse.
Elena grabbed my hand.
"Marcus, there's something I didn't tell you.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"When I saw Noah three months ago, Vanessa told me something.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"She said he believed she was his mother.""
I felt as though someone had punched me.
"No.""
Elena began crying.
"She changed his records. She gave him another name. She told him his real parents had abandoned him.""
Ava looked up from the back seat.
"Mommy, does Noah know about us?""
Elena wiped her cheeks.
"Not yet, sweetheart.""
I stepped out of the vehicle.
The clinic's rear entrance was only a few yards away.
Daniel handed me a small flashlight.
"There's a security camera above the door.""
I looked up.
A red light blinked.
Then the camera turned toward us.
A loudspeaker crackled.
"Welcome home, Marcus.""
Vanessa's voice.
I froze.
A screen beside the entrance lit up.
A little boy appeared.
He was sitting on a bed, holding a stuffed rabbit.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
A small scar on his chin.
My son.
Noah.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
"Mommy says my real daddy is coming to take me away.""
My eyes burned.
I stepped toward the screen.
"Noah, buddy...""
The boy frowned.
"Who are you?""
I swallowed.
"I'm your father.""
He stared at me.
Then someone entered the room behind him.
Vanessa.
She placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Sweetheart, remember what we discussed?""
Noah nodded.
"Bad people might come looking for me.""
Vanessa smiled at the camera.
"That's right.""
She leaned down and kissed his forehead.
Then she looked directly at me.
"Now, Marcus, let's see whether your son believes you.""
The screen changed.
A second camera appeared.
It showed a small room with a glass window.
Inside stood a woman wearing a medical uniform.
Her face was pale.
Her hair was dark.
And around her wrist was the matching silver bracelet.
Elena grabbed my arm.
"No...""
I turned toward her.
"What is it?""
She stared at the screen, trembling.
"That's impossible.""
"Who is she?""
Elena's lips parted.
Then she whispered:
"That's Noah's biological mother.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Elena shook her head, tears falling.
"Marcus, there's something else your father never told you.""
The woman on the screen slowly lifted her face.
She looked exactly like Vanessa.
But she was older.
And beneath her photograph, the clinic's computer displayed a name.
*ELENA COLE.*
My wife grabbed my hand.
"Vanessa isn't her real name.""
The screen went black.
Then the clinic's main entrance unlocked.
May you like
A woman's voice came through the loudspeaker.
"Come inside, Marcus. It's time you learned who your children really are.""
