Chapter 7: The Woman Who Wore My Wife's Face
"Nobody moves until I understand what I just saw.""
My voice echoed through the abandoned parking lot.
Elena stood beside me, staring at the dark clinic entrance. Her face had lost every trace of color.
Daniel approached the security camera.
"Marcus, we need to get inside. Whatever Vanessa is planning, she's already activated the internal lockdown.""
I turned toward Elena.
"Who is Elena Cole?""
My wife shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"She has your name.""
"I know.""
"And you told me Vanessa's name was Vanessa Cole.""
Elena looked at the screen.
"Marcus, I need you to understand something. When I first met Vanessa, she introduced herself as Vanessa Hart. She was working at the clinic under that name.""
"Why would she use your last name?""
"Because she wanted me to believe she was connected to someone I trusted.""
Daniel interrupted.
"That's not the only reason.""
I turned toward him.
"What else?""
He swallowed.
"Vanessa was born with a twin sister.""
Elena closed her eyes.
I looked between them.
"You're telling me Vanessa has a twin?""
Daniel nodded.
"Her name was Elena.""
I stared at the screen.
The woman in the medical uniform was still visible in the frozen image.
"Then who's the woman we've been calling Vanessa?""
Daniel looked at Elena.
"Her sister.""
Elena shook her head.
"No. That can't be right.""
Daniel pulled a folded document from his jacket.
"I found this in your father's private archive. I was supposed to destroy it.""
He handed it to me.
The document was a birth registration.
Two names appeared beneath the same date.
*ELENA COLE — FEMALE TWIN A.*
*VANESSA COLE — FEMALE TWIN B.*
Below them was another name.
Their mother.
Margaret Cole.
I looked at Elena.
"Did you know?""
She nodded slowly.
"Not until recently. Vanessa told me she had no family. She said she grew up in foster care.""
"Why would she lie?""
"Because her sister disappeared.""
I looked back at the screen.
The woman in the uniform raised her head.
For one brief moment, I could see her face clearly.
She looked almost identical to my wife.
Almost.
But her eyes were different.
Colder.
A loud click came from the clinic entrance.
The door opened.
A speaker crackled.
"Marcus, you have exactly three minutes to enter.""
Vanessa's voice.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"She's controlling the building remotely.""
I pulled away.
"Then we stop her.""
We entered.
The corridor smelled of disinfectant and damp concrete. Old fluorescent lights flickered above us.
Ava held Elena's hand.
"Daddy, where's Noah?""
I crouched.
"We're going to find him.""
"Will he know we're his family?""
I looked at Elena.
She smiled through her tears.
"He will.""
At the end of the corridor, a security guard stood beside a locked door.
Daniel recognized him.
"Peter?""
The guard turned.
His eyes widened.
"Mr. Brooks?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where is the boy?""
Peter looked toward the ceiling camera.
"I can't help you.""
I approached him.
"That boy is my son.""
Peter lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
"Open the door.""
"I'll lose my job.""
I stared at him.
"There's a six-year-old child in there who has been told his parents abandoned him. You're worried about your job?""
Peter swallowed.
Then he reached for the keypad.
The door unlocked.
Inside was a small medical office.
Photographs covered one wall.
Children.
Dozens of them.
Some were infants.
Others were older.
Each photograph had a number and a date.
Elena approached the wall.
Her fingers moved over the images.
Then she stopped.
A small photograph showed a newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.
Beneath it was a handwritten name.
*BABY M — BIOLOGICAL PARENTS: MARCUS AND ELENA VALE.*
Elena covered her mouth.
"That's him.""
I stared at the photograph.
My son.
The first picture I had ever seen of him.
Ava moved closer.
"Is that Noah?""
Elena nodded.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
I reached for the photograph.
Behind it was a folder.
Inside were medical reports, adoption documents, and a photograph of Vanessa holding a baby.
But the most disturbing item was a signed agreement.
It authorized the transfer of Noah to a private guardian.
The signature belonged to my father.
At the bottom was another signature.
Mine.
Except I knew I had never signed it.
Daniel examined the document.
"This is the authorization Vanessa used to convince the clinic staff.""
I looked at him.
"Can you prove it's forged?""
"Yes. Your signature has a different pressure pattern. I have the original company documents.""
I took the folder.
"Good. We're taking everything.""
A sudden sound came from the hallway.
A door slammed.
Then Ava screamed.
I turned.
A woman stood at the entrance.
She wore a white medical coat.
Her blonde hair was pulled back.
And her face was almost identical to Elena's.
"Hello, sister," she said.
Elena froze.
The woman smiled.
"Long time.""
Elena stepped in front of Ava.
"Stay away from my family.""
The woman laughed.
"Your family?""
She looked at me.
"Marcus, you have no idea how much trouble this woman has caused.""
I moved toward her.
"Where is my son?""
She raised a small tablet.
"Safe.""
"Bring him here.""
"First, I want the archive.""
"No.""
Her smile vanished.
"Then I suppose we'll have to negotiate.""
I looked at her carefully.
"Which one of you is Vanessa?""
She tilted her head.
"Does it matter?""
"Yes.""
She stepped closer.
"I'm the woman who raised your son.""
Elena shook her head.
"You stole him.""
"I gave him a life.""
"You told him we abandoned him!""
"Because you did.""
Elena lunged forward.
I caught her before she reached the woman.
Vanessa laughed.
"Still emotional. Still incapable of thinking clearly.""
I stared at her.
"Why did you want Noah?""
Her expression changed.
For the first time, something resembling genuine pain appeared in her eyes.
"Because my sister was supposed to have everything.""
She looked at Elena.
"The husband. The children. The beautiful house. The perfect life.""
Elena stared back.
"You were offered help. You refused it.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Because I didn't want help. I wanted what you had.""
She turned toward me.
"And when your father offered me a position at his clinic, I finally had a way to get it.""
I felt sick.
"So you stole my child because you were jealous of my wife?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Not exactly.""
She tapped the tablet.
A live video appeared.
Noah was sitting in a small room.
Beside him stood another woman.
She was wearing a hospital gown.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Your son has a condition your family has been hiding for generations.""
Elena stepped forward.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"Is it?""
Then she turned the tablet toward me.
A medical report appeared.
At the top was Noah's name.
Beneath it was a diagnosis I had never seen.
And at the bottom, highlighted in red, was a sentence that made Elena collapse into a chair.
*PATIENT'S BIOLOGICAL MATERNAL HISTORY DOES NOT MATCH RECORDED PARENTAGE.*
I looked at my wife.
"What does that mean?""
Elena began shaking her head.
"Marcus...""
May you like
Vanessa leaned closer.
"It means you have spent six years searching for a son who may not actually be yours.""
