Chapter 5: The Signature on the Death Certificate
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Daniel stood in the narrow corridor, holding a gun pointed at my chest.
Behind the glass, Elena was crying.
Ava clung to my leg.
And the man I had trusted with my life was telling me that I had paid to imprison my own wife.
"Put the gun down," I said.
Daniel shook his head.
"You need to listen.""
"I said put it down.""
"Your father used your signature to authorize the medical program. The money came from your company. Every transfer was approved under your name.""
"That's impossible.""
"He had access to your accounts.""
"I would have noticed!""
"Not if the payments were hidden inside the acquisition expenses.""
I stared at him.
My father had died nine years earlier, but his business empire had remained under my control.
Daniel had managed several financial divisions.
He knew every account.
Every password.
Every transaction.
I looked at the woman behind the glass.
"Elena, did you know about this?""
She nodded slowly.
"Marcus, your father told me the same thing. He showed me documents with your signature. He said you had agreed to everything.""
My throat tightened.
"But I didn't.""
"I know that now.""
I stepped closer to the glass.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because when I tried, Vanessa showed me a recording.""
"What recording?""
Elena wiped her face.
"It showed you signing the authorization papers.""
I shook my head.
"I never signed anything like that.""
"I know. It was edited. They used footage from a company meeting.""
Daniel lowered the gun slightly.
"Your father had everything arranged years before you knew what was happening.""
I turned toward him.
"And you knew.""
Daniel looked down.
"I discovered the truth after Elena disappeared.""
"Fourteen months ago?""
He nodded.
"Vanessa contacted me. She said Elena had evidence that could destroy the company. She told me she wanted to meet privately.""
"And you took her here.""
"Yes.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"She threatened my family.""
The answer came out in a whisper.
"My wife was sick. My son needed surgery. Vanessa had access to money and medical contacts. She promised to help if I cooperated.""
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
"So you traded Elena for your family.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"I thought it would only be for a few days.""
Elena struck the glass again.
"He's leaving something out!""
Daniel flinched.
I turned.
"What?""
Elena pressed her palm against the barrier.
"Ask him who signed the death certificate.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What death certificate?""
He said nothing.
"Daniel.""
He closed his eyes.
"After the boating accident, Vanessa arranged for a private medical examiner to issue a death declaration.""
"Elena's body was never found.""
"The certificate was based on falsified identification records.""
I stared at him.
"You told me the authorities had completed their investigation.""
"I did.""
"You told me the search was over.""
"I know.""
"You sat beside me at the memorial service!""
Daniel's face crumpled.
"I know.""
I grabbed his jacket and slammed him against the wall.
"YOU LET ME MOURN A WOMAN WHO WAS ALIVE!""
He didn't fight back.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to make him feel even a fraction of what Elena had endured.
But Ava began crying.
"Daddy, please.""
I released him.
Daniel slid down the wall.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Elena pointed toward the observation room's control panel.
"Marcus, there's a release button beneath the monitor.""
I looked.
A small red switch was hidden under the console.
I reached for it.
Daniel suddenly grabbed my arm.
"Don't!""
I turned.
"What now?""
"That switch opens the room, but it also activates the chamber's pressure system.""
"Explain.""
He looked at the ceiling.
"The observation room is connected to the lower pool chamber. If the pressure changes too quickly, the glass can break.""
I stared at the thick glass wall.
"Then how do we get her out?""
Daniel hesitated.
"There's a manual release in the maintenance corridor.""
"Where?""
"Behind the east wall.""
I looked toward the corridor.
"Take me there.""
Daniel slowly stood.
He placed the gun on the floor.
"There's something else you need to know.""
I had no patience left.
"What?""
He looked at Ava.
"Vanessa didn't keep Elena here because of the company documents.""
Elena stepped closer to the glass.
"Daniel, don't.""
He continued.
"She kept her because Elena knows where your son is.""
My heart stopped.
"Where is he?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. But Vanessa has been searching for him.""
Elena pressed her forehead against the glass.
"Marcus, our son is alive.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"How do you know?""
"Because I saw him.""
"When?""
"Three months ago.""
I grabbed the edge of the console.
"Where?""
"At the old clinic. Vanessa brought him there.""
"Did you speak to him?""
Elena shook her head.
"They wouldn't let me near him. He was in another room. I could only see him through a window.""
I swallowed.
"What did he look like?""
Elena closed her eyes.
"He had your eyes.""
Tears blurred my vision.
"How old is he?""
"Six.""
Six years.
Six years of birthdays.
Six years of Christmas mornings.
Six years of a little boy growing up without knowing his parents were searching for him.
I pressed my forehead against the glass.
"I'm going to find him.""
Elena nodded.
"His name is Noah.""
Ava suddenly looked up.
"That's my brother's name?""
Elena smiled through her tears.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Ava moved toward the glass.
"Can I meet him?""
Elena covered her mouth.
"Very soon.""
A loud alarm interrupted us.
The lights turned red.
A digital display above the door began counting down.
00:09:59.
00:09:58.
I looked at Daniel.
"What is that?""
He stared at the screen.
"The lower chamber is flooding.""
"How do we stop it?""
"Someone activated the emergency purge.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked at the security monitor.
A familiar figure appeared on the screen.
Vanessa.
She was standing inside the control room, holding a tablet.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then she smiled.
A voice came through the intercom.
"Marcus, I see you've found your wife.""
I stepped toward the camera.
"Open the doors!""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Give me the key, and I'll consider it.""
"You're going to prison.""
"Perhaps. But not before I finish what your father started.""
I clenched my fists.
"What do you want?""
She lifted a photograph toward the camera.
It showed a little boy standing beside a playground.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
A small scar on his chin.
My son.
Noah.
Vanessa smiled.
"Do you recognize him?""
I couldn't speak.
"He's a beautiful child, isn't he?"" she continued.
"And he's about to disappear again.""
Elena screamed.
"NO!""
Vanessa leaned closer to the camera.
"Marcus, you have exactly five minutes to bring me the brass key.""
The screen went black.
The countdown continued.
00:08:41.
Daniel rushed toward the maintenance corridor.
"There's another way out!""
I grabbed his arm.
"Where does it lead?""
"To the old clinic.""
I looked at Elena.
Her hands were pressed against the glass.
"Marcus, get our son!""
I turned toward the corridor.
But Ava suddenly spoke.
"Daddy?""
I looked down.
She was holding the silver bracelet from the wooden box.
The tiny bracelet had a name engraved inside.
Not Noah.
Not Elena.
It read:
*VANESSA.*
I stared at it.
Then I remembered the photograph.
Vanessa had been standing beside Elena's hospital bed six years ago.
She hadn't simply been working for my father.
She had been there when my first child was born.
And suddenly I understood why she was so desperate to keep Noah hidden.
May you like
He wasn't just evidence of a crime.
He was something she believed belonged to her.
