Chapter 3: The Child Nobody Was Supposed to Remember
I stepped between Daniel and my daughter.
"Stay where you are.""
Daniel raised both hands.
"Marcus, please. Let me explain.""
"Explain what? The secret room? The woman beneath my pool? Or the fact that you knew my wife was alive?""
His eyes dropped.
That silence told me more than any confession could.
I held up the photograph.
"Why is Vanessa standing beside Elena in a hospital room six years ago?""
Daniel stared at it.
"Where did you find that?""
"Answer me.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Not here.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Not here? You're standing in my daughter's bedroom. My dead wife is apparently speaking through a wall, and you want to schedule this conversation somewhere more convenient?""
Daniel glanced toward Ava.
"She shouldn't hear this.""
I tightened my grip on the photograph.
"Then you should have thought about that before you became part of whatever happened.""
Daniel looked exhausted.
"Marcus, there are things Elena never told you.""
"Start talking.""
He closed the bedroom door.
Then he looked at the hidden compartment.
"That system was installed before you purchased this house.""
"I know.""
"Your father knew about it.""
I went still.
My father had died nine years earlier.
He had built the company that made me wealthy. He had also purchased this property long before I inherited it.
"What did my father have to do with this?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Everything.""
Ava moved closer to me.
I put a hand on her shoulder.
Daniel continued.
"Your father owned several medical research facilities. One of them operated outside the city. Officially, it was a private maternity clinic.""
I frowned.
"Why am I hearing about this now?""
"Because it wasn't just a maternity clinic.""
He swallowed.
"It handled confidential adoptions, medical trials, and records that were never supposed to exist.""
I stared at him.
"You're telling me my father ran an illegal operation?""
"I'm telling you I found documents after Elena disappeared.""
"What documents?""
"Birth certificates. Medical reports. Financial transfers. And a file with your name on it.""
I shook my head.
"This makes no sense.""
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"Elena discovered the operation before you married her. She confronted your father. He promised to shut it down.""
"And?""
"He didn't.""
A cold feeling settled in my stomach.
"What does this have to do with our daughter?""
Daniel didn't answer.
I grabbed his jacket.
"What happened to our first baby?""
His face changed.
There it was.
The truth I had been trying not to imagine.
"Marcus...""
"Tell me!""
Daniel looked toward Ava.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Elena didn't have a miscarriage.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I released his jacket.
"What?""
"Your first child survived.""
I stared at him.
"That's impossible. I saw the hospital records.""
"They were altered.""
I shook my head.
"Elena told me our baby died.""
"She was told that the child had died. She never saw the body.""
My throat tightened.
"Where is my child?""
Daniel looked down.
"I don't know.""
I took a step backward.
For six years, I had believed my first child had died before taking a single breath.
I remembered Elena crying in the hospital bathroom.
I remembered holding her while she apologized for something that wasn't her fault.
I remembered promising we would try again when she was ready.
And now Daniel was telling me our child had never died.
"Who changed the records?"" I asked.
Daniel hesitated.
"Vanessa.""
I turned toward him.
"Why?""
"She was working at the clinic under another name. She had access to the records. Your father paid her to keep certain information hidden.""
"Why would my father do that?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Because the child wasn't supposed to be yours.""
I felt something inside me break.
"What does that mean?""
Before Daniel could answer, Ava spoke.
"Mommy said I have a brother.""
Both of us turned toward her.
I crouched.
"Sweetheart, what did Mommy tell you?""
"She said my brother was taken away when he was little.""
My chest tightened.
"Did she tell you his name?""
Ava shook her head.
"She said he was called something different.""
Daniel looked as though he might collapse.
I stood.
"You're going to tell me everything.""
He nodded slowly.
"Elena found out the truth about the clinic. She discovered that your father had arranged for your first child to be transferred to another family. He believed the baby had a medical condition and wanted him raised somewhere he could be monitored.""
"Monitored for what?""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Your family has a rare genetic condition. Your father was obsessed with finding a way to treat it.""
I stared at him.
"And he used my child?""
Daniel didn't answer.
I walked toward the bedroom window.
The mansion's garden stretched beneath the evening lights. Everything looked perfect.
The trimmed hedges.
The expensive fountains.
The house where my wife had supposedly died.
It suddenly felt like a prison.
"Why didn't Elena tell me?""
"She tried. Your father threatened to have her declared mentally unstable. He had enough influence to make it happen.""
I turned.
"And Vanessa?""
"She helped him.""
"Why did she come into my life?""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"After your father died, Elena started collecting evidence. She planned to expose everything. Vanessa found out and began following her.""
I remembered the first time I met Vanessa.
A charity gala.
A spilled glass of wine.
Her warm smile.
Her hand resting on my arm as she told me she admired how devoted I was to my daughter.
I remembered how she had slowly encouraged me to stop visiting Elena's parents.
How she had convinced me to remove Elena's photographs from the living room.
How she had told me Ava needed a mother, not a ghost.
I had thought she was helping me heal.
She had been erasing Elena.
"Why did she pretend to love me?"" I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
"Because she needed access to this house.""
A sudden crash echoed from downstairs.
Then came the sound of running footsteps.
Daniel turned toward the door.
"She's here.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
Ava suddenly grabbed my hand.
"Daddy, the lady from the picture is downstairs.""
My blood turned cold.
I moved toward the bedroom door.
Daniel blocked my path.
"Marcus, don't go down there.""
I stared at him.
"Get out of my way.""
"She's armed.""
I froze.
"What?""
Daniel looked at the hidden compartment.
"Vanessa knows you found the key. She won't let you reach the wine cellar.""
Ava began crying.
I pulled her behind me.
Then a voice came through the bedroom speaker.
It was Elena.
"Marcus, don't listen to Daniel.""
I grabbed the microphone.
"Elena, where are you?""
Her voice trembled.
"He's lying about one thing.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What thing?""
A pause.
Then Elena whispered:
"Daniel didn't discover the secret after I disappeared. He was the one who delivered me to Vanessa.""
I slowly turned toward my best friend.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
Before I could move, the bedroom door clicked.
Someone had locked it from the outside.
Ava screamed.
May you like
And through the speaker, Elena said one final sentence.
"Run, Marcus. They're coming for our son tonight.""
