Chapter 8: The Night Vanessa Finally Confessed

At 8:45 PM, I parked two levels below the main entrance of the hospital.

Detective Miller and his partner were positioned nearby. Another officer was monitoring the surrounding entrances.

I wasn't alone, despite Vanessa's instructions.

The parking garage smelled of wet concrete and gasoline.

A few cars stood scattered beneath flickering fluorescent lights.

At 9:03, Vanessa appeared.

She wore a long black coat and carried a leather handbag.

When she saw me, she stopped.

"You're late.""

"I've been here for fifteen minutes.""

She glanced around.

"Are you alone?""

"Why?""

"Because I told you to come alone.""

I looked at her.

"You don't get to give me instructions anymore.""

She approached slowly.

"Daniel, I need you to listen carefully.""

"I'm listening.""

She took a folded document from her handbag.

"Richard has been lying to me.""

"That's hardly surprising.""

"He told me Rachel's trust could be transferred if we established that she had been mentally incapable of making financial decisions near the end.""

I stared at her.

"That's why you wanted her medical records?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He said we needed evidence.""

"Evidence of what?""

"That she was confused. That she couldn't understand the documents she signed.""

I shook my head.

"Rachel knew exactly what she was doing.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I know that now.""

I almost laughed.

"Now?""

She looked down.

"I thought I was protecting my children.""

"Your children?""

"Ethan and Lucas.""

"What did Maya ever do to them?""

"Nothing.""

"Then why did you target her?""

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"Because Richard convinced me that the inheritance would eventually destroy our family. He told me that you would always prioritize Maya, that everything would go to her, and that my boys would be left with nothing.""

"That was Rachel's money. She left it for her daughter.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"I didn't understand how far Richard was willing to go.""

I stepped closer.

"Then tell me about the hospital.""

She looked toward the concrete wall.

"Rachel discovered that Richard had accessed some of the financial records. She confronted me. She said she knew we were trying to challenge the trust.""

"Were you?""

"Yes.""

"Did you forge my signature?""

She closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

The admission hung between us.

I felt anger rising, but I kept my voice steady.

"Why?""

"Richard prepared the documents. He said you would eventually sign them anyway.""

"So you forged my name.""

"I was desperate.""

"You were greedy.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Maybe.""

I looked at her for a long moment.

"Did you interfere with Rachel's medication?""

She didn't answer.

I repeated the question.

"Vanessa, did you?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I searched her face.

"Then why did Rachel accuse you?""

"Because she found me holding one of her medication records. Richard had asked me to photograph it.""

"Why?""

"He wanted to compare the prescription information with the trust records.""

I stared at her.

"That makes no sense.""

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like you're leaving out the important part.""

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I kept this because I was afraid Richard would turn against me.""

Inside was a photocopy of a hospital incident report.

It documented an unauthorized medication access attempt.

The name listed was Richard Hale.

I stared at the paper.

"How did you get this?""

"Rachel gave me a copy before she died.""

I looked up sharply.

"Why would she give you evidence against Richard?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because she wanted me to help her expose him.""

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

"What?""

"Rachel discovered that Richard had been manipulating medical and financial records for several clients. She believed he was using vulnerable families to gain access to their assets.""

"And you helped him?""

"At first.""

She began crying harder.

"Then I realized what he was doing.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was involved in the trust application. I was afraid of being arrested.""

I stared at her.

For the first time, I could see the full ugliness of what had happened.

Vanessa hadn't simply been manipulated.

She had participated.

Then, when things became dangerous, she had tried to save herself.

"What happened the night Rachel died?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

"I visited her.""

"I know.""

"She told me she had copies of everything. She said she was going to give them to James and the hospital.""

"Then?""

"Richard called me. He said if Rachel reported him, everyone involved would be investigated.""

"Everyone including you.""

She nodded.

"So you left?""

"Yes.""

"Did you touch her medication?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"No, Daniel. I swear I didn't.""

I wanted to believe her.

But I couldn't.

"Why did you tell Maya her mother died because of her illness?""

"Because I didn't want her asking questions.""

"Why did you tell her she might be sent away?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"Because I wanted her to stop talking about Rachel.""

I stepped backward.

"You made a twelve-year-old girl afraid to sleep in her own bedroom.""

"I know.""

"You took away her photographs.""

"I know.""

"You made her believe she didn't belong in her father's home.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I know!""

Her voice echoed through the parking garage.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

"Richard told me Rachel's final recording had been destroyed.""

I froze.

"Why?""

"Because it contained his voice.""

I pulled out my phone.

"You're telling me Richard was present when Rachel was discussing the medication?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes. He visited her several times. The last time, they argued about the original records.""

"Did you record it?""

"No.""

"Then how do you know?""

She looked toward the elevator.

"Because he told me.""

A figure appeared near the far staircase.

Richard.

He walked toward us with his hands in his coat pockets.

Vanessa turned white.

"Why are you here?""

Richard ignored her.

He looked at me.

"Daniel, this is getting out of hand.""

I took a step backward.

"Don't come any closer.""

He smiled faintly.

"You've been listening to a woman who has lied to you for years.""

Vanessa stepped between us.

"Richard, leave.""

He laughed.

"You think you can suddenly become innocent?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I'm not innocent. But I'm finished helping you.""

Richard's expression changed.

He reached into his coat and removed a small flash drive.

"Do you know what's on this?""

I stared at it.

"The original hospital recording.""

Richard nodded.

"Rachel made a mistake trusting people.""

Vanessa began shaking.

"Give it to Daniel.""

Richard ignored her.

"There's something else you should know, Daniel. The medical records were not the only thing Rachel changed before she died.""

I felt my heartbeat quicken.

"What else?""

Richard smiled.

"She changed the beneficiary instructions.""

Vanessa looked at him in horror.

"That's impossible.""

He turned toward her.

"You didn't know?""

She shook her head.

Richard looked back at me.

"Rachel made a final amendment. And if you find the original document, you'll understand why she was so afraid.""

Before I could respond, two officers emerged from the staircase.

"Richard Hale! Keep your hands where we can see them!""

Richard turned.

His smile vanished.

He tried to move toward the elevator, but Detective Miller and another officer blocked his path.

"Don't move.""

Richard dropped the flash drive.

An officer secured it.

Vanessa sank against a concrete pillar.

I stood motionless.

The detective approached me.

"Mr. Carter, we have enough grounds to bring him in for questioning regarding the forged documents and unauthorized medical records access.""

"What about Rachel?""

"We'll be requesting a full review of the medical investigation.""

Richard was handcuffed.

As officers escorted him away, he turned his head.

"Daniel! You think you're protecting Maya, but you have no idea what Rachel signed!""

I stepped forward.

"What did she sign?""

He laughed.

"Ask Whitmore!""

Then the elevator doors closed.

Vanessa sat on the ground, crying.

I looked at her.

"Was Richard telling the truth?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I walked away.

My phone rang before I reached the car.

It was James Whitmore.

"Daniel, I've located the original amendment.""

"What amendment?""

"Rachel's final trust document.""

"Richard said she changed the beneficiary instructions.""

Whitmore paused.

"Yes.""

"What's in it?""

His voice became unusually serious.

"Rachel didn't simply protect Maya's inheritance. She included a provision that becomes active if anyone attempts to remove her from the trust through fraud or coercion.""

"What provision?""

"She appointed an independent guardian to oversee Maya's interests.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Whitmore took a breath.

Then he answered.

"Rachel's older sister, Elizabeth.""

I felt my heart skip.

"Rachel had a sister?""

May you like

Whitmore was silent.

"Daniel, I think it's time you learned why Rachel's family disappeared from your life.""
