Chapter 3: The Photograph Beneath the Music Box
I didn't sleep that night.
The photograph lay on my desk beside Rachel's letter, the forged trust application, and the documents Whitmore had given me.
I kept looking at Richard Hale's face.
He appeared to be in his early forties in the picture. Tall, clean-shaven, with a narrow jaw and a confident smile.
Rachel stood beside him, but she wasn't smiling.
Her expression was serious.
Almost frightened.
At seven the next morning, I called Whitmore.
"Do you recognize the man in this photograph?""
He was quiet for a moment.
"That's Richard Hale.""
"Why was he meeting Rachel?""
"I told you. He was a financial consultant who approached her family.""
"Was he close to Vanessa?""
"We believe they knew each other before you married.""
My stomach tightened.
"How long before?""
"At least two years.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Could you find out where he is?""
"I can try. But Daniel, I strongly recommend that you stop confronting Vanessa until we understand what we're dealing with.""
"She threatened my daughter.""
"Then we need to protect Maya first.""
I glanced toward the hallway.
Maya was still asleep.
"Can you help me arrange that?""
"Yes. I'll contact a family attorney and make sure the trust records are secured.""
After the call, I went downstairs.
Vanessa was already in the kitchen, drinking coffee.
She looked up when I entered.
"You're awake early.""
"Didn't sleep.""
"Neither did I.""
She pushed a cup toward me.
I didn't touch it.
"We need to talk.""
She sighed.
"Daniel, if this is about Maya's little performance yesterday, I refuse to apologize for things I didn't do.""
I placed the photograph on the counter.
Her hand stopped halfway to her cup.
"Where did you get that?""
"Inside Rachel's music box.""
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
Then she looked toward the staircase.
"Does Maya know you have it?""
"Why does that matter?""
She picked up the photograph.
For several seconds, she studied Richard's face.
Then she placed it down.
"Rachel was paranoid near the end.""
I felt my anger rise.
"Don't.""
"Daniel, she was ill. She was taking medication. She became suspicious of everyone.""
"She wasn't suspicious when she wrote this.""
I pointed to the back.
He knows what Vanessa did.
Vanessa's face went pale.
Then, almost immediately, she recovered.
"That could mean anything.""
"Then explain it.""
She crossed her arms.
"I don't owe you an explanation for every photograph your dead wife left behind.""
I stepped closer.
"You owe Maya an explanation for threatening her.""
Vanessa slammed her cup onto the counter.
"She is not innocent, Daniel!""
I stared at her.
"What did she do?""
"She constantly reminds everyone that she came first. She acts as though this house belongs to her because her mother once lived here.""
"Her mother helped buy it.""
Vanessa froze.
I watched her carefully.
There it was.
The reaction I had been waiting for.
"You knew about the trust," I said.
She shook her head.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Rachel's father funded the purchase. Maya is the sole beneficiary. You tried to transfer the property two years ago.""
Vanessa's lips parted.
Then she laughed.
It was a strange, brittle sound.
"James Whitmore told you that?""
"Yes.""
"That old man has no idea what he's talking about.""
"He showed me the application with my forged signature.""
Vanessa turned away.
For the first time, I saw something more than anger in her face.
Panic.
"You have no proof I forged anything.""
"That's what the investigation will determine.""
She spun around.
"Investigation?""
"Yes.""
"You're going to destroy this family over paperwork?""
I looked at her.
"You destroyed this family when you decided my daughter didn't belong in it.""
She stepped closer, lowering her voice.
"Think very carefully about what you're doing, Daniel. You have two stepsons who depend on you. You have a reputation. You have a business.""
"Don't use your sons to threaten me.""
"I'm reminding you that this isn't just about Maya.""
"No. It's about all three children.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand what Rachel left behind.""
"Then tell me.""
She looked toward the staircase again.
Her voice dropped.
"Some things are better left buried.""
Before I could respond, the front door opened.
Ethan walked in wearing his school uniform.
He looked from his mother to me, then at the photograph on the counter.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
I turned toward him.
"You recognize him?""
Ethan swallowed.
Vanessa immediately stepped between us.
"Go upstairs.""
"Mom—"
"I said go upstairs!""
Ethan didn't move.
Instead, he looked directly at me.
"Mr. Carter, can I talk to you?""
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"Not now.""
He pulled away.
"Stop telling me what I can say!""
The kitchen fell silent.
I had never heard Ethan speak to his mother that way.
He looked exhausted.
His eyes were red, and his hands were trembling.
"That man came here last month," he said.
Vanessa's face went white.
"Ethan, stop.""
"He came to the house while you were at work.""
I looked at him.
"Richard Hale?""
Ethan nodded.
"He met Mom in the study. They were arguing.""
"What did you hear?""
Ethan glanced at Vanessa.
Then he looked down.
"She said she needed the money before Maya turned eighteen.""
My stomach tightened.
"What money?""
"I don't know. But Richard said the trust couldn't be touched unless something happened to Maya's legal status.""
Vanessa slapped her hand against the counter.
"That's enough!""
Ethan flinched.
I moved between them.
"Don't shout at him.""
She pointed at her son.
"He has no idea what he's talking about!""
Ethan's voice broke.
"I heard you say it, Mom!""
"Go to your room!""
"No!""
He looked at me.
"There's something else.""
Vanessa's face changed.
It wasn't anger anymore.
It was fear.
Real fear.
Ethan reached into his backpack and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
"I found this in your office, Mom. I took a picture of it because I thought it was about Maya.""
He handed it to me.
The document was a photocopy of a medical report.
Maya Carter.
Date of birth.
Medical provider.
And a handwritten note in the margin.
Obtain updated psychological evaluation. Challenge guardianship if necessary.
I read the words twice.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
"Why are you collecting medical information about my daughter?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's not what it looks like.""
"Then what does it look like?""
"Richard told me it was necessary.""
"Necessary for what?""
She pressed her lips together.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Mom, tell him.""
Vanessa turned on him.
"You have no idea what I've sacrificed for you!""
Ethan looked as though she'd struck him.
"I never asked you to hurt Maya.""
For a moment, Vanessa had no response.
Then she grabbed her purse and walked toward the door.
"You're all making a terrible mistake.""
I followed her with my eyes.
"Where are you going?""
"Somewhere I can think.""
She opened the front door.
Before leaving, she turned around.
"Daniel, if you take this any further, you'll regret what you discover.""
The door slammed.
I stood in the kitchen holding the medical report.
Ethan sat down heavily.
"Is Maya going to be okay?""
I looked at him.
"Yes. I promise.""
He shook his head.
"You don't understand.""
"What?""
He rubbed his face.
"Mom told Richard that if she couldn't get the house, she would make sure Maya couldn't stay here.""
My blood ran cold.
"What exactly did she mean?""
Ethan reached into his backpack again.
This time, he removed his phone.
"I recorded something.""
He pressed play.
At first, there was only muffled noise.
Then Vanessa's voice came through clearly.
"Richard, I don't care what the lawyer says. I need the trust under my control.""
Richard answered.
"That isn't how it works. Maya is the beneficiary.""
"Then find another way.""
"Vanessa, you can't keep pretending Daniel won't discover the forged documents.""
A pause.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
"By the time he finds out, the girl won't be his responsibility anymore.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Richard's voice became sharper.
"What are you planning?""
Vanessa answered with chilling calm.
"I've already arranged it.""
The recording ended.
Ethan stared at me.
"I don't know what she meant. But last week, I heard her on the phone asking someone about a school in another state.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Maya was standing there.
She had heard everything.
Her small hands gripped the wooden railing.
"Dad?""
I rushed toward her.
"Sweetheart, come here.""
She came down slowly.
Her eyes were fixed on the phone.
"Is Mrs. Vanessa going to send me away?""
I knelt in front of her.
"No one is sending you anywhere.""
"But she said I wouldn't be your responsibility.""
I took both her hands.
"Listen to me. You are my daughter. Nothing in this house, no document, no amount of money, and no person can change that.""
Maya began to cry.
Then she whispered something that made my heart stop.
"Dad, there's something I haven't told you.""
I brushed a tear from her cheek.
"What is it?""
She looked toward the front door Vanessa had just slammed.
"Mrs. Vanessa came into my room last Friday night.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did she do?""
Maya swallowed.
"She told me Mommy Rachel didn't really die because of her illness.""
I couldn't move.
"She said what?""
Maya reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
"I found this under my pillow the next morning. I was scared, so I didn't tell you.""
I unfolded it.
There were only two sentences.
Your mother knew the truth about me.
If you want to know what happened to her, ask your father why he never checked the hospital records.
I stared at the handwriting.
It belonged to Vanessa.
And suddenly, the eight million dollars, the forged documents, and the photograph of Richard Hale seemed like small pieces of a much darker puzzle.
Because my wife wasn't merely trying to take my daughter's inheritance.
She was trying to make sure Maya never learned what had happened to her mother.
I picked up my phone and called James Whitmore.
When he answered, I spoke only six words.
"I need Rachel's complete medical records.""
His response came immediately.
"Daniel, there's something you need to know first.""
I gripped the edge of the counter.
"What?""
"Rachel's original hospital file was requested by someone using your name eleven months ago.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Who requested it?""
Whitmore hesitated.
May you like
Then he said the name.
"Vanessa Carter.""
