Chapter 5: The Man Who Visited My Wife Before She Died

I drove straight to Maya's school.

I called the principal before arriving and asked that she remain inside until I got there.

When I reached the front office, she was sitting beside her teacher, holding her backpack.

"Dad!""

She ran into my arms.

I held her tighter than usual.

"Are you okay?""

She nodded.

"Why are you here early?""

"Because I wanted to spend the afternoon with you.""

I didn't tell her about the photograph.

Not yet.

The school principal, Mrs. Henderson, walked over.

"Mr. Carter, we received an unusual phone call about Maya earlier.""

My attention sharpened.

"What kind of call?""

"Someone claiming to be a relative requested confirmation of her dismissal schedule.""

"Who?""

"They identified themselves as Richard Hale.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Did you give them any information?""

"No. Our policy requires verified parental authorization.""

I thanked her and took Maya home.

When we entered the house, Mrs. Collins was waiting in the kitchen.

She looked relieved.

"Thank goodness you're back.""

"What happened?""

She glanced toward the study.

"Mr. Hale came here.""

I put Maya behind me.

"When?""

"About twenty minutes ago. Mrs. Vanessa let him in.""

"Where are they now?""

"They went into the study. They've been arguing.""

I looked at Maya.

"Go upstairs with Mrs. Collins, sweetheart.""

She hesitated.

"Are you going to be okay?""

I forced a smile.

"I will be.""

She followed Helen upstairs.

I walked toward the study.

The door was partially open.

Richard stood beside my desk, holding a document.

Vanessa was pacing.

"You told me the application was secure," she said.

Richard shook his head.

"I told you it had been submitted. I never said it was approved.""

"Then fix it!""

"I can't fix a trust that doesn't belong to you.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"You promised me.""

Richard gave a humorless laugh.

"I promised to help you access the assets. I didn't promise to make you invisible.""

I pushed the door open.

Both turned.

"Interesting conversation.""

Vanessa's face went pale.

Richard calmly placed the paper on my desk.

"Daniel. We should talk.""

I looked at him.

"Stay away from my daughter.""

He raised both hands.

"Nobody is threatening Maya.""

"Someone photographed her leaving school today.""

Richard's eyes moved briefly toward Vanessa.

That small movement told me everything.

"You two have been watching her?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Daniel, you're being unreasonable.""

"Don't.""

I pointed at Richard.

"Who took the photograph?""

He said nothing.

I took out my phone and showed him the message.

His expression changed.

"That's not my number.""

"But you know something about it.""

Richard adjusted his jacket.

"Look, this has become unnecessarily complicated. The trust was supposed to be restructured years ago.""

"By forging my signature?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

Richard sighed.

"That was a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

"The paperwork was prepared in good faith.""

"Using my signature without my permission.""

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Why were you visiting Rachel at the hospital?""

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely uncomfortable.

Vanessa moved between us.

"That's none of your business.""

"Rachel was my wife.""

"And she was very sick!""

Her voice echoed through the room.

I stared at her.

"Why did you visit her seven times?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I was trying to help.""

"Help with what?""

She shook her head.

"You don't know what she was like near the end.""

"I know she was frightened.""

"She was paranoid!""

"She was documenting medication discrepancies.""

Richard shifted his weight.

Vanessa noticed.

"Richard, tell him.""

He looked at her.

"Tell him what?""

"The truth.""

Richard exhaled.

"Daniel, your wife was concerned about the administration of her medication. She believed certain prescriptions had been altered.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Who altered them?""

"We don't know.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Did Vanessa?""

Richard looked away.

That was enough to make me sick.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the edge of the desk.

"Stop this!""

I turned toward her.

"Why did you go to the hospital?""

She looked at Richard.

He shook his head slightly.

She swallowed.

"Rachel asked me to.""

I stared.

"Why?""

"She wanted to discuss the trust.""

"While she was dying?""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"She knew she wasn't going to survive. She wanted to make arrangements.""

"What arrangements?""

"She wanted everything protected for Maya.""

I nodded slowly.

"That sounds exactly like Rachel.""

Vanessa's expression twisted.

"She made me promise I would look after Maya.""

The words struck me harder than I expected.

"Then why have you spent four years making that little girl feel unwanted?""

Vanessa began crying.

Not the quiet kind.

She covered her face with both hands.

"I didn't know how to live with it.""

"Live with what?""

She lowered her hands.

"Knowing she trusted me.""

I looked at Richard.

He was watching her with an expression I couldn't read.

Vanessa continued.

"Rachel knew about the trust. She knew the inheritance was protected. She wanted me to help her make sure you couldn't use the money.""

"I never wanted the money.""

"I know that now.""

"Then what did you do?""

Vanessa looked down.

"I made a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

"Vanessa, don't.""

She turned on him.

"You told me it was harmless!""

He grabbed her arm.

I moved immediately.

"Let go of her.""

Richard released her.

Vanessa backed away.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Richard told me Rachel was changing the trust. He said if Maya became the only beneficiary, there would be nothing left for our boys.""

I stared at her.

"That was a lie.""

"I know.""

"Did you know that when you submitted the forged application?""

She didn't answer.

I felt something inside me go numb.

For years, I had allowed this woman to sit beside my daughter at dinner, attend her school events, and live under the same roof.

Meanwhile, she had been trying to steal the future Rachel had carefully protected.

"Get out of my house," I said.

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You can't throw me out.""

"Watch me.""

Richard picked up his briefcase.

"Daniel, this conversation is going nowhere.""

I took out my phone.

"Then we'll let the authorities decide where it goes.""

Richard stopped.

Vanessa looked at me in disbelief.

"You wouldn't call the police on your own wife.""

I looked at her.

"I would call them on anyone who threatened my child.""

Richard walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned around.

"You should be careful about accusing people without understanding the full story.""

I held his gaze.

"I've spent four years not understanding the full story. I'm finished doing that.""

He left.

Vanessa remained standing in the study.

For a moment, she looked like the woman I had married.

Then she said something that made me question everything again.

"Daniel, Rachel wasn't the only person who knew what happened at that hospital.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Ask Mrs. Collins.""

I turned toward the hallway.

Helen was standing there.

Her face was pale.

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"Go ahead. Ask her what she saw the night Rachel died.""

I looked at Helen.

She lowered her eyes.

And then she whispered:

"Mr. Daniel, I was there.""

My heart began pounding.

"You were at the hospital?""

She nodded.

"Mrs. Rachel asked me to come because she was frightened.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Helen began crying.

"Because before she passed away, she made me promise to protect Maya.""

"From whom?""

Helen looked toward Vanessa.

May you like

Then she spoke the words I would never forget.

"From the person who had access to her medication.""
