Chapter 6: The Promise Rachel Made Before She Died
Helen had worked in our home for eleven years.
She had attended Rachel's birthday dinners, watched Maya take her first steps, and helped prepare the house when Rachel's health began to decline.
I had trusted her.
But now she stood in the hallway, trembling as though she had been carrying something unbearable for years.
"Tell me everything," I said.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Don't encourage her. Helen has always been dramatic.""
Helen flinched.
I turned toward my wife.
"Leave.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"This is my home too.""
"Not anymore.""
She stared at me.
Then she picked up her handbag and walked upstairs.
I waited until I heard the bedroom door close.
Then I turned back to Helen.
"Sit down.""
She shook her head.
"I'd rather stand.""
"Please.""
She lowered herself into a chair.
I sat opposite her.
"What happened at the hospital?""
Helen folded her hands.
"Mrs. Rachel called me three nights before she died. She asked me to come after visiting hours.""
"Why didn't she call me?""
"She said she didn't want you to worry.""
I lowered my eyes.
I remembered that evening.
I had been at a business dinner, discussing a commercial property acquisition.
Rachel had texted me that she was tired and wanted to sleep.
I had replied that I loved her.
I had no idea she was frightened.
Helen continued.
"When I arrived, she was very weak. But she was awake, and she was upset.""
"What did she say?""
"She asked whether Mrs. Vanessa had been in the house.""
I looked up.
"What did you tell her?""
"I said yes. Mrs. Vanessa had been there several times.""
Helen paused.
"Mrs. Rachel asked me whether I had ever seen her going into the medicine cabinet.""
My chest tightened.
"Had you?""
Helen nodded slowly.
"Twice.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know what she was doing. She said she was looking for a document, and I believed her.""
I stared at Helen.
"Did Rachel know?""
"She suspected.""
Helen reached into her apron pocket and removed a small folded paper.
"I've kept this since that night.""
I opened it.
It was a handwritten note.
Rachel's handwriting.
Helen, please remember what I told you. If anything happens to me, make sure Maya keeps her mother's things. Don't let anyone convince Daniel that I wanted to leave her.
I looked at the note for a long time.
"Did Rachel tell you someone was hurting her?""
Helen nodded.
"She said she believed her medication records had been altered. She didn't know who was responsible, but she was frightened that someone was trying to make her condition worse.""
I struggled to breathe.
"Did she mention Vanessa?""
"She said Vanessa had been asking questions about the trust. She also said Richard Hale had been visiting.""
"Was Richard at the hospital that night?""
Helen nodded.
"Yes.""
I stood up.
"Why was he there?""
"He arrived shortly before midnight. Mrs. Rachel became very upset when she saw him.""
"What did she say?""
Helen closed her eyes.
"She told him to leave.""
"And?""
"He said he only wanted to discuss some paperwork.""
I gripped the back of the chair.
"What happened next?""
"Mrs. Rachel asked me to call the nurse. But before I could, Mrs. Vanessa arrived.""
I stared at her.
"Vanessa was there too?""
"Yes.""
Helen's voice dropped.
"They argued in the hallway.""
"What about?""
"I couldn't hear everything. But I heard Mrs. Vanessa say, 'You promised this wouldn't come back to hurt me.''"
My stomach turned.
"What did Rachel say?""
Helen looked directly at me.
"She said, 'You made your choice. Now leave my daughter alone.''"
The room seemed to grow colder.
"What happened after that?""
Helen began crying.
"I went to get the nurse. When I returned, Mrs. Vanessa and Mr.
Hale were gone. Mrs. Rachel was asleep.""
"Did she die that night?""
"No. She died two days later.""
I sat down slowly.
"Did the hospital investigate?""
"They asked questions, but I didn't know what to tell them. Mrs. Vanessa said I would lose my job if I repeated what I heard.""
I looked at her.
"She threatened you?""
Helen nodded.
"She said I was an outsider and that nobody would believe a housekeeper over the wife.""
I felt ashamed.
For four years, Helen had remained silent because she believed I wouldn't protect her.
"Why are you telling me now?""
She reached across the table and placed her hand over mine.
"Because Miss Maya is being threatened. Mrs. Rachel made me promise that I would protect her if anything happened.""
I squeezed her hand.
"You did what you thought was right. But you don't have to carry this alone anymore.""
At that moment, Maya appeared in the doorway.
She had been listening.
"Mrs. Collins?""
Helen immediately stood.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Did Mommy know she was going to die?""
Helen's eyes filled with tears.
"Oh, darling.""
Maya stepped closer.
"Did she know she wouldn't come home?""
Helen knelt in front of her.
"Your mother loved you more than anything. Whatever she was afraid of, she never stopped thinking about you.""
Maya's lips trembled.
"Then why didn't she say goodbye?""
Helen gently held her shoulders.
"She tried, sweetheart. She left you something.""
Maya looked at me.
"What?""
I remembered the second envelope Whitmore had mentioned.
I hadn't received it yet.
I called him immediately.
"James, Rachel left another letter for Maya. I need it.""
He was quiet.
"There's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"Rachel didn't leave just one letter. She left a sealed package containing several personal recordings and a written statement.""
I stood.
"Where is it?""
"With her original estate documents. I arranged for it to be delivered once you confirmed the trust had been challenged.""
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""
"Because Rachel specifically instructed me not to release it until the trust was under investigation.""
"When can I collect it?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
I ended the call.
Maya looked up at me.
"Does Mommy have something for me?""
I knelt beside her.
"Yes, sweetheart. Something she wanted you to have.""
She smiled faintly.
For the first time in days, I saw a little hope return to her face.
But it disappeared when my phone rang again.
This time, it was Ethan.
"Mr. Carter?""
"What's wrong?""
"I'm at home.""
"Where's Lucas?""
"In his room.""
"Where's your mother?""
A pause.
"She came back with Richard.""
My stomach tightened.
"Are they together?""
"Yes. They're in the study.""
I looked toward Helen.
"Did they see you?""
"No. I came upstairs when they arrived.""
"Stay with Lucas. Don't go near them.""
Ethan lowered his voice.
"I think they're looking for something.""
"What?""
"The old blue folder.""
I froze.
"What blue folder?""
"The one Mom kept hidden behind the books in her study.""
"Have you seen it?""
"Yes. Last week, she took it out and showed Richard.""
"What was inside?""
Ethan hesitated.
"Pictures.""
"What kind of pictures?""
"I don't know. But I saw one of Maya.""
My heart stopped.
"Why would there be a picture of Maya?""
"I don't know. There were also pictures of the hospital and some papers with Rachel's name.""
I looked at the staircase.
Maya was standing beside Helen.
"Listen to me, Ethan. Don't touch anything. I'll be home soon.""
I ended the call and grabbed my car keys.
But before I could leave, Helen spoke.
"Mr. Daniel, there's something else.""
I turned.
She looked frightened.
"Mrs. Rachel once told me that if you ever found the blue folder, you should look inside the back cover.""
"Why?""
Helen swallowed.
"Because she hid something there.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"A recording.""
My phone vibrated again.
A message from Ethan.
*They're leaving. Richard has the folder.*
Then another message appeared.
*Dad, Mom just said something. She said Rachel wasn't supposed to survive long enough to sign the final documents.*
I read it once.
Then again.
The words blurred.
Vanessa hadn't simply tried to steal Maya's inheritance after Rachel died.
Someone had expected Rachel to die before she could finish protecting her daughter.
And now I understood why Rachel had written that warning.
The truth wasn't buried in the foundation of our house.
It was buried in the final days of my wife's life.
And somewhere inside that missing blue folder was the evidence that could finally reveal who had been responsible.
I called James Whitmore.
"Don't release anything to Vanessa. Don't let Richard access another document. And I want the police involved.""
"Daniel, what happened?""
I looked at Maya.
Then I answered.
"I think my wife's death was never properly investigated.""
Whitmore was silent.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Daniel, I was afraid you would eventually discover that.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why?""
"Because Rachel came to my office three days before she died.""
"What did she tell you?""
His voice dropped.
"She told me she believed someone had deliberately interfered with her treatment.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who did she suspect?""
Whitmore took a breath.
May you like
Then he answered.
"She named Vanessa.""
