Chapter 7: The Recording Rachel Left Behind
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
James Whitmore had just confirmed what I had spent the entire morning trying not to believe.
Rachel suspected Vanessa.
Not because of a family argument. Not because of jealousy. Not because of money.
She suspected her of interfering with her medical treatment.
"James," I said, struggling to keep my voice steady, "why didn't you tell me this four years ago?""
"Because Rachel asked me not to.""
"She was my wife!""
"I know, Daniel. But she believed that telling you would put you in danger.""
I looked toward Maya.
She was sitting beside Helen, carefully winding the little ballerina inside Rachel's music box.
"Did Rachel tell you exactly what Vanessa did?""
"She gave me a written statement. I kept it with the original trust documents.""
"Then I want it.""
"You can collect everything tomorrow morning. But I need you to understand that the statement contains allegations, not proof. We'll need the original medical records and an independent investigation.""
"I understand.""
I ended the call.
Then I looked at Maya.
"Sweetheart, I need to go somewhere with Mrs. Collins for a little while.""
"Are you going to find Mommy's letter?""
"Yes.""
She stood and hugged me.
"Please bring it home.""
I kissed her forehead.
"I promise.""
Before leaving, I called Ethan.
He answered immediately.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Where are you?""
"In my bedroom. Lucas is here.""
"Is your mother still home?""
"No. She left with Richard.""
"Did you see which direction they went?""
"Downtown, I think.""
I paused.
"Ethan, I need you to tell me something. Have you ever seen your mother with Rachel's medical documents?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Last week. She was looking through a folder in the study. She kept saying something about a missing signature.""
"What signature?""
"I don't know. But she said Rachel had signed something before she died, and if the original was found, everything would be over.""
I gripped the steering wheel.
"Did you see the document?""
"No. But I saw Mom put something inside a blue folder.""
"Where is it now?""
"I think Richard has it.""
I ended the call and drove to Whitmore's office.
The package was waiting in a locked cabinet.
Whitmore placed it on his desk.
"Rachel was very specific about this," he said.
"She wanted you to receive it only if someone attempted to interfere with Maya's inheritance.""
I opened the package.
Inside were three envelopes, a small USB drive, and a sealed statement bearing Rachel's signature.
My hands trembled.
I opened the first envelope.
It contained a letter addressed to me.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, something happened that I desperately hoped we could prevent.
I need you to understand that I never wanted money to become part of our daughter's life. I wanted her to have choices. I wanted her to be safe.
There are people who believe Maya's inheritance should be divided among children who have no legal claim to it. I tried to resolve this peacefully, but I no longer trust everyone around us.
Please investigate Vanessa's connection to Richard Hale.
And whatever happens, never let anyone convince Maya that she was responsible for my death.
I stopped reading.
The last sentence made my vision blur.
Whitmore quietly placed a glass of water beside me.
"There's more," he said.
I opened the second envelope.
It contained a list of dates, medication references, and names.
Several entries corresponded with the hospital records.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Vanessa Reed.
Beside one date, Rachel had written:
She removed the original prescription record.
Another entry read:
Richard says the hospital can be persuaded to correct the file.
And the final entry:
I am afraid they will make Daniel believe I was confused.
I looked at Whitmore.
"Did you know about these notes?""
"Only after Rachel's death. She delivered them personally.""
I picked up the USB drive.
"What's on this?""
"Three audio recordings and a video file.""
We connected it to his computer.
The first recording began with Rachel's voice.
She sounded weak, but unmistakably herself.
"James, I need you to document this. Vanessa came to see me again today. She says she's trying to protect Daniel from financial problems, but I don't believe her.""
A pause.
"I found out that Richard has been discussing the trust with her. They believe that if they can challenge my daughter's guardianship arrangements, they can redirect the money.""
My fingers tightened.
Then Rachel continued.
"There's something else. I asked the nurse about the medication discrepancy. She told me the records didn't match the original prescription.""
The recording ended.
Whitmore opened the second file.
This time, there was a conversation.
Rachel's voice came first.
"Why are you doing this, Vanessa?""
A chair moved.
Then Vanessa answered.
"Because I'm tired of being treated like an outsider.""
Rachel sounded exhausted.
"This has nothing to do with you being an outsider. Maya is your husband's daughter.""
"And everything in this house revolves around her!""
"She is twelve years old.""
"She has an entire future secured by money she doesn't even understand.""
"That money belongs to her.""
A pause.
Then Vanessa spoke more quietly.
"You always make me feel like I can never replace you.""
Rachel answered immediately.
"You were never supposed to replace me.""
Silence.
Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.
"Richard says there's a way to make the problem disappear.""
Rachel's voice became sharper.
"What problem?""
"Maya's inheritance.""
"Leave my daughter alone.""
The recording ended abruptly.
I stared at the computer.
Whitmore looked equally disturbed.
"Daniel, we need to preserve these recordings and submit them to the appropriate authorities.""
I nodded.
Then I opened the final video.
It showed Rachel sitting in her hospital bed.
Her face was pale. Her hair was thinner from treatment. But her eyes were clear.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Daniel, if you're watching this, I hope I'm wrong about everything.""
She smiled sadly.
"I hope Vanessa has become a good person. I hope Maya is happy. I hope you're sitting beside her somewhere, watching her grow up.""
Rachel took a breath.
"But if things have gone the way I fear, please remember something. Maya is not a burden. She is not a reminder of my death. She is the most beautiful part of our life.""
I covered my mouth.
Rachel continued.
"I also need you to find the original blue folder. I gave it to someone I trusted because I didn't know who else to turn to.""
She leaned closer to the camera.
"Look behind the old music box's wooden base. There's a second compartment.""
The video stopped.
I looked at Whitmore.
"Did you know about the compartment?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
I immediately called Helen.
"Helen, do you still have Rachel's music box?""
"Yes, Mr. Daniel. Miss Maya has it.""
"Please don't open it or move anything. I'll be home shortly.""
When I arrived, Maya was sitting at the kitchen table.
The music box was in front of her.
"Did you find Mommy's letter?"" she asked.
I smiled weakly.
"I found something even more important.""
I turned the music box over.
There was a small wooden panel beneath the base.
Using a narrow tool from my desk drawer, I carefully loosened it.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
And inside that compartment was a miniature memory card.
Maya watched silently.
"What's that?""
"Something your mother wanted me to find.""
I placed it in my pocket.
Before I could say anything else, the doorbell rang.
Helen went to answer it.
A moment later, she returned with two police officers.
One introduced himself as Detective Miller.
"Mr. Carter, we received a report concerning possible financial fraud and unauthorized access to medical records.""
I nodded.
"I have evidence.""
The detective looked at the memory card.
"Is that what I think it is?""
"Possibly.""
He took a careful look at it without touching it.
"Where did you find it?""
"In a compartment my late wife hid inside my daughter's music box.""
The detective exchanged a glance with his partner.
Then he asked a question I hadn't expected.
"Mr. Carter, have you contacted Vanessa today?""
"No.""
"Good. We need to speak with her before she has an opportunity to destroy additional evidence.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
*Daniel, I know what Rachel left behind. Meet me alone tonight, or you'll never learn what really happened in that hospital.*
I showed the detective.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at me.
"Mr. Carter, I don't recommend meeting her alone.""
I stared at the message.
For four years, Vanessa had controlled the truth by keeping me in the dark.
That ended tonight.
I typed a reply.
*Where?*
Her answer arrived almost immediately.
*The old hospital parking garage. 9 PM. Come alone.*
Detective Miller looked at me.
"She may be trying to retrieve evidence.""
May you like
I nodded.
"Then perhaps it's time she explained herself.""
