Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone
The knock came again.
Three slow hits against the front door.
Nobody moved.
The sound traveled through the entire house.
I looked at Dad.
Dad looked at Melissa.
Melissa looked at Claire.
And Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.
Because to her, maybe she had.
“Who is it?”” Dad called.
No answer.
Another knock.
This time louder.
Ethan grabbed my hand.
I squeezed his fingers.
“Stay behind me,” I whispered.
But the truth was, I was scared too.
The person standing outside knew our house.
Knew Claire.
Knew Michael.
Knew secrets that had been buried for years.
Dad moved toward the door.
Melissa stepped beside him.
“Wait.””
He stopped.
“Let me check.””
She looked through the window beside the door.
Then immediately stepped back.
Her face changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“Don’t open it.””
Dad stared at her.
“Who is it?””
Melissa didn’t answer.
She looked at Claire.
“Do you know?””
Claire was shaking.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
“No.””
Melissa’s voice became sharper.
“Claire.””
Everyone looked at her.
She swallowed.
Then whispered:
“It’s him.””
My heart stopped.
Dad’s face went blank.
“No.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I know that voice.””
Nobody spoke.
Dad looked through the window.
And for several seconds, he just stood there.
Then he unlocked the door.
“Dad,” I said.
He looked back.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
We all knew.
He opened the door.
A man stood on the porch.
Older than the picture.
Thinner.
His hair had more gray.
But I recognized him immediately.
Michael.
The man who had been hiding behind every secret.
The man who had ruined my father’s company.
The man who was supposed to be gone.
He looked at Dad.
Then smiled slightly.
“Hello, Daniel.””
My father didn’t move.
“How are you alive?””
Michael tilted his head.
“That’s a strange way to greet someone.””
Dad’s voice was cold.
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“You let people believe you were dead.””
Michael looked past him.
At Claire.
“She told you.””
Claire stepped backward.
“Michael.””
His smile disappeared.
“Claire.””
The way he said her name made my skin crawl.
Not because he yelled.
Because he didn’t need to.
There was history there.
Pain.
Fear.
Control.
Dad stepped between them.
“You need to leave.””
Michael looked amused.
“You still protect everyone before yourself.””
“Leave.””
Michael ignored him.
“Did she tell you everything?””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“She told me enough.””
“No.””
Michael smiled.
“She told you what she needed you to believe.””
Claire’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked at her.
“You really thought you could escape?””
Dad moved closer.
“Stop talking to her like that.””
Michael looked at him.
“You have no idea what you married.””
The words hurt.
Not because we believed him.
Because they sounded like a threat.
Dad pointed toward the street.
“Get off my property.””
Michael sighed.
“I didn’t come here to fight.””
“Then why are you here?””
He reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out a folder.
“I came to give you the truth.””
Melissa stepped forward.
“What truth?””
Michael looked at her.
“And you are?””
“My lawyer.””
Michael smiled.
“Of course.””
He handed the folder to Dad.
“Open it.””
Dad didn’t take it.
“Why would I trust you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Michael looked directly at him.
“You should trust evidence.””
Dad finally took the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Emails.
Records.
My father flipped through them.
His expression slowly changed.
“What is this?””
Michael looked at Claire.
“Ask her.””
Dad looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Michael laughed quietly.
“You always say that.””
Claire’s eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t get to come here and pretend you’re the victim.””
Michael’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked angry.
“You think you’re the victim?””
“Yes.””
“You forget why you came into his life?””
Dad looked up.
“What?””
Claire froze.
Michael smiled.
“There it is.””
“Explain.””
Claire shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Michael continued.
“She didn’t meet you by accident.””
My chest tightened.
Dad looked at Claire.
“Is that true?””
Claire opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Michael looked satisfied.
“Tell him.””
“Shut up.””
“Tell him how you researched him.””
Dad stared.
“How?””
Claire whispered:
“Michael…”
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You wanted his company. You wanted his information. You wanted access.””
Dad looked at Claire.
“Is that true?””
She looked devastated.
“No.””
Michael laughed.
“She’s always been good at lying.””
Claire suddenly shouted:
“You destroyed my life!””
The porch went silent.
Michael looked at her.
“There she is.””
Claire stepped forward.
“I left because I found out who you were.””
“No.””
“I escaped you.””
“You ran.””
“Because you were dangerous.””
Michael smiled.
“And yet you did exactly what I told you.””
Claire froze.
My father looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Then Michael said:
“She was supposed to gather information.””
Dad went still.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“Daniel, listen—”
“No.””
His voice broke.
“Is it true?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“It started that way.””
Silence.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
Dad looked away.
Not angry.
Broken.
Michael watched him carefully.
“She was supposed to get close to you.””
Claire shook her head.
“But then things changed.””
Dad looked at her.
“When?””
She cried silently.
“When I fell in love with you.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Michael looked different for a second.
Almost annoyed.
Like he hated that part.
Dad’s voice was barely audible.
“How long?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“How long did you plan this?””
“Before I met you.””
The truth hurt.
Even though we already suspected it.
Dad stepped back.
“And the documents?””
“I made them because Michael wanted proof I had control.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“And the locks?””
Claire looked ashamed.
“That was me.””
No excuses.
No explanation.
Just those words.
“That was me.””
I felt Ethan move closer.
Dad opened his eyes.
“Why?””
Claire looked at us.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Michael?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hurt them?””
She cried.
“Because I started believing control was the only way to survive.””
Dad shook his head.
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
Michael interrupted.
“You see? She’s always been weak.””
Claire looked at him.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was quiet.
But different.
“I was weak when I listened to you.””
Michael smiled.
“You’re still listening.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“I’m done.””
For the first time, Michael looked surprised.
Dad watched her carefully.
Claire looked at the folder in Dad’s hand.
“There’s something you need to know.””
Dad said nothing.
“Michael didn’t just want information.””
“What did he want?””
She looked at Michael.
“He wanted your company.””
Dad frowned.
“He already tried that.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“He failed because you stopped him.””
Michael’s expression hardened.
Claire continued.
“He had another plan.””
“What plan?””
She looked at Dad.
“He wanted to destroy you from the inside.””
The house went silent.
Michael smiled.
“You’re making things dramatic.””
Claire ignored him.
“He wanted me to make you trust me completely.””
Dad stared.
“Why?””
“Because the final step required something only a spouse could do.””
Nobody breathed.
“What?””
Claire looked at Michael.
Then back at Dad.
“He wanted me to sign something.””
Dad looked at the folder.
“What?””
“A transfer.””
Michael’s smile disappeared.
Claire whispered:
“Your company.””
The words echoed.
Dad opened the folder again.
His hands moved faster.
He searched through the documents.
Then stopped.
Because he found it.
A signed agreement.
A transfer document.
His company.
His life’s work.
And at the bottom…
His own signature.
Dad looked confused.
“I never signed this.””
Michael smiled.
“That’s because she did.””
Claire went pale.
“No.””
Dad looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
She stared at the paper.
Then whispered:
“That’s not possible.””
Michael took one step forward.
“Tell him.””
Claire shook her head.
“I never signed that.””
May you like
Michael smiled.
“Then why does it have your fingerprint?””
