Chapter 6: The Marriage That Started Before We Met

Claire didn’t answer.

That was the first time I saw my father completely lose his words.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was hurt.

The kind of hurt that happens when a person realizes they may have been living inside someone else’s plan.

He held the document in his hand.

Six months before they met.

Six months before their first date.

Six months before Claire ever stepped into our house.

The papers existed.

Waiting.

Planning.

Preparing.

“Claire,” my father said quietly.

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

The sentence made my stomach turn.

Because it was the same sentence people used when the truth was already too large to hide.

Dad placed the document on the table.

“Then explain.””

Claire sat down.

For the first time, she looked smaller.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

Just smaller.

“I didn’t marry you because of your money.””

Nobody spoke.

Dad looked at her.

“That’s not what I asked.””

“I know.””

“Then answer the question.””

She looked at the paper.

“I was preparing for the possibility that something would happen.””

“Before you knew me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Because of Michael.””

The name changed the atmosphere instantly.

Everything kept coming back to him.

Like a shadow following every secret.

Dad pulled out a chair and sat across from her.

“Start from the beginning.””

Claire looked at the floor.

“I met Michael when I was twenty-six.””

I stayed quiet.

Ethan sat beside me.

Even he knew this was something we needed to hear.

“He was charming,” Claire continued.

“Confident. He made everyone believe he was the smartest person in the room.””

Dad’s expression hardened.

“That sounds familiar.””

Claire looked at him.

“I’m not saying that to hurt you.””

“But you are describing him.””

“Yes.””

She paused.

“At first, I thought he was successful because he worked hard. I thought he was ambitious.””

“What happened?””

“I found out ambition wasn’t the reason.””

Her fingers tightened.

“It was greed.””

Dad looked at Melissa.

She was taking notes.

“Michael started using people,” Claire said.

“He would become close to someone, learn everything about them, then find their weakness.””

“What weakness?””

“Trust.””

The word sat between us.

Dad looked away.

“Continue.””

“One day, I found documents.””

“What kind?””

“Financial documents.””

Dad’s face changed.

“Like these?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Documents giving you control?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because Michael taught me something.””

Nobody moved.

“He taught me that people who have power don’t lose it because someone takes it from them.””

She looked up.

“They lose it because they hand it over.””

Dad stared at her.

“That’s why you made those documents?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I made them because I was scared.””

“Of Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did they involve me?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because after I left him, I learned something.””

“What?””

“He had already started planning his next move.””

Dad leaned forward.

“What move?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she said:

“You.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“What?””

Claire looked at Dad.

“Michael knew about you before I did.””

My father didn’t move.

“What does that mean?””

“He knew your company. Your finances. Your business history.””

Dad’s voice became quiet.

“How?””

“Because he was still watching.””

Melissa interrupted.

“Why would he watch Mr. Carter?””

Claire looked at her.

“Because Michael believed everyone who succeeded without him had something he deserved.””

Dad looked at the documents.

“So you met me because of him?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“No.””

But the answer was too fast.

Dad noticed.

“Claire.””

She looked away.

That was enough.

The room became painfully quiet.

I felt anger rising.

After everything.

After the locks.

After the food.

After the fear.

There was still something else.

Something bigger.

“Were you sent here?””

My voice came out before I could stop it.

Everyone looked at me.

Claire looked hurt.

“No.””

“Then why were you preparing documents before meeting Dad?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why did you know about his money?””

Silence.

“Why did you hide Michael?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words shocked me.

“Protect us?””

“Yes.””

“By controlling us?””

Her face changed.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You made choices.””

Dad looked at me.

But he didn’t stop me.

Because he knew I was saying what he couldn’t.

“You chose to lock food away.””

“You chose to lie.””

“You chose to hide things from Dad.””

Claire’s eyes became wet.

“I was afraid.””

“So were we.””

That sentence broke the room.

Because it was the first time anyone had said it directly.

Claire looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“I never wanted you to be afraid.””

“But we were.””

She looked down.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Dad asked the question that changed everything.

“Did Michael know you married me?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Dad stood.

“Did he?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

My father stepped back.

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

“You told him?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Claire looked at the table.

“He found out.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

“He contacted me.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“A few weeks before we got married.””

Dad stared.

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to handle it.””

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“You were hiding it.””

Claire didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

Dad walked away from the table.

He looked exhausted.

Like every new answer created another question.

Melissa picked up the folder.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

She removed another document.

“This one is different.””

Dad walked back.

“What is it?””

“A property agreement.””

Claire looked at the paper.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Melissa looked at her.

“You’ve never seen this?””

“No.””

Dad frowned.

“Then why was it with your documents?””

Melissa scanned the page.

“It appears someone added it later.””

“Added what?””

She turned the paper.

A signature.

A name.

Not Claire’s.

Not Dad’s.

Michael’s.

My father stared.

“He signed something involving our house?””

Melissa nodded.

“And there’s more.””

She pointed to the bottom.

“Look at the date.””

Dad looked.

Then froze.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Dad didn’t answer.

Melissa did.

“The date is two days after your wedding.””

My father’s face went pale.

“Two days after?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Claire looked terrified.

“I didn’t do this.””

Dad looked at her.

“Then who did?””

Nobody knew.

Then the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“What happened?””

Dad immediately stood.

“Stay here.””

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Everyone froze.

The power had not just gone out.

Someone had cut it.

Dad moved toward the hallway.

Melissa whispered:

“Don’t go alone.””

But he did.

Because that was who my father was.

He protected people before protecting himself.

We heard footsteps.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then silence.

Dad’s voice echoed from downstairs.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then a sound.

A phone vibrating.

Not Dad’s.

Not mine.

Claire’s.

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly reached into her pocket.

Her face changed when she saw the screen.

“What?””

Dad came back into view.

“Who is it?””

Claire didn’t speak.

Her hands were shaking.

“Claire.””

She looked at Dad.

Then turned the phone around.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Only six words.

But they made Claire collapse into the nearest chair.

Because they weren’t a threat.

May you like

They were a reminder.

*“You promised you’d finish the job.””*
