Chapter 9: The Signature That Wasn’t Hers

Nobody spoke.

Not even Michael.

The silence that followed was different from all the others.

Before, the silence had been filled with fear.

Now it was filled with confusion.

Dad held the document in his hand.

His eyes moved between the signature and Claire’s face.

“Your fingerprint?””

Claire looked like she couldn’t breathe.

“I don’t understand.””

Michael smiled.

“You understand perfectly.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I never signed anything.””

“Then explain the evidence.””

Claire looked at Melissa.

“Can you check it?””

Melissa immediately took the document.

She studied the page carefully.

Then she looked at Michael.

“Where did you get this?””

Michael shrugged.

“From where it came from.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one you’re getting.””

Melissa ignored him.

She examined the signature.

Then the fingerprint mark.

Then the date.

Her expression changed.

“This is strange.””

Dad stepped closer.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“The signature appears authentic.””

My stomach dropped.

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Melissa continued.

“But the document itself has inconsistencies.””

“What kind?””

“The ink.””

Everyone looked at her.

“The signature and the printed text were not created at the same time.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone prepared the document first, then added the signature later.””

Claire stared.

“So someone copied my signature.””

Melissa nodded.

“Possibly.””

Michael laughed softly.

“Possibly?””

Melissa looked at him.

“You seem very confident for someone who supposedly had nothing to do with this.””

His smile faded.

Dad looked at Michael.

“Where did you get Claire’s fingerprint?””

Nobody answered.

That was the question.

The one nobody wanted to touch.

Claire suddenly whispered:

“The documents.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She looked at Dad.

“The papers from my closet.””

Her face changed as she realized something.

“The ones you found…”

She stopped.

Dad understood.

“Someone planted them.””

Claire nodded slowly.

Michael’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Melissa noticed.

“Mr. Reeves.””

He looked at her.

“You knew those documents were there.””

“No.””

“You reacted when she mentioned them.””

“I reacted because I knew Claire.””

Melissa stepped closer.

“You knew too much.””

Michael smiled.

“You’re good.””

“I know.””

“But not good enough.””

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at him.

“It means you still don’t know who the real enemy is.””

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Michael looked at her.

“You still protect him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he’s not like you.””

That sentence changed something.

Michael stopped smiling.

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

Dad noticed.

And so did I.

Because the person who seemed untouchable had finally reacted.

Michael pointed at Claire.

“You forget who saved you.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Saved me?””

“You would have had nothing.””

“I would have had peace.””

The porch became silent.

Michael stared at her.

Then slowly looked at Dad.

“You really believe she changed?””

Dad didn’t answer.

“She didn’t.””

“Enough.””

Michael ignored him.

“She came into your life with a mission.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Because she couldn’t deny it.

“I know.””

Dad looked at her.

That hurt more than anything.

“I know she did.””

Michael smiled.

“But you don’t know the whole story.””

Dad looked up.

“What else?””

Claire’s face changed.

“Michael.””

He ignored her.

“She didn’t just hide information from you.””

Dad’s voice became colder.

“What else did she do?””

Claire whispered:

“Don’t.””

Michael smiled.

“She had a chance to tell you.””

Dad looked at Claire.

“What?””

She looked away.

And that was enough.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was going to.””

“Going to what?””

Michael answered for her.

“Tell him that she helped me get close.””

The words hit hard.

Dad stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Claire shook her head.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain.””

She took a breath.

“When Michael first contacted me, I was scared.””

Dad said nothing.

“I thought if I cooperated, he would leave me alone.””

“And did he?””

“No.””

Claire looked at Michael.

“He never intended to.””

Michael smiled.

“You should have known better.””

Claire’s voice became stronger.

“I learned.””

Dad looked between them.

“What did you help him with?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Information.””

“What information?””

She swallowed.

“Your schedule.””

My chest tightened.

Dad became still.

“My schedule?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before we married.””

The truth sat there.

Heavy.

Ugly.

But then Claire continued.

“I stopped.””

Dad looked at her.

“When?””

“The moment I realized what he was planning.””

“What was he planning?””

Michael laughed.

“You’re still pretending you’re innocent.””

Claire turned toward him.

“I am not pretending anything.””

“No?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I made terrible choices.””

Everyone went quiet.

“But I stopped.””

Michael shook his head.

“You stopped because you fell in love.””

“Yes.””

“Not because you grew a conscience.””

Claire looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice was steady.

“I stopped because I saw what you were willing to do.””

Michael’s smile disappeared.

Dad looked at Claire.

“What did he do?””

Claire looked at the ground.

“I found out he was planning to frame you.””

“For what?””

She hesitated.

“Financial crimes.””

Dad’s face went pale.

“What?””

“He wanted evidence that made it look like you were stealing from your own company.””

Melissa immediately looked at the documents.

“That explains the transfer agreement.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“He wanted control.””

“Yes.””

Claire looked at him.

“He wanted everyone to believe you were the problem.””

A cold realization passed through me.

The refrigerator locks.

The financial papers.

The warnings.

The marriage.

Everything had been connected.

But one question remained.

“Why did you hurt us?””

Everyone looked at Claire.

She looked at me.

And this time, she didn’t have an excuse.

“I don’t know.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

She wiped her face.

“I was angry.””

“At us?””

“No.””

She looked at Dad.

“At myself.””

Nobody spoke.

“I hated that I had let him control me.””

Her voice broke.

“And instead of admitting I was scared, I tried to control everything around me.””

She looked at Ethan.

“I’m sorry.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

And I understood why.

Sorry didn’t erase months of fear.

Dad looked exhausted.

But before he could say anything, Melissa’s phone rang.

She answered.

“Yes?””

She listened.

Then walked away slightly.

A few seconds later, she returned.

“We have a problem.””

Dad looked at her.

“What now?””

She looked at Michael.

“He’s not the only person involved.””

Michael’s face changed.

“What?””

Melissa held up her phone.

“The transfer documents were not created by him alone.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“There was another person.””

“Who?””

She looked at Claire.

Then at Dad.

“The person who helped create the paperwork.””

Claire whispered:

“No.””

Dad stared.

“Who?””

Melissa turned the screen around.

There was a name.

A name that made Dad step back.

Because it was someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had been in his house many times.

My father’s voice barely came out.

“That’s impossible.””

Melissa shook her head.

“It’s confirmed.””

Dad stared at the name.

Then looked toward the front door.

Because suddenly the person who had been helping destroy his life wasn’t standing outside.

They were much closer.

The name on the screen was:

*Daniel Carter’s own business partner.*

And then Dad’s phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

It was the same person.

The person whose name was on the document.

Dad answered.

Nobody breathed.

A voice came through.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Daniel.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then the voice said:

“Because you were never supposed to find out about Claire.””

Dad’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Look behind you.””

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

The garage door opened.

May you like

And standing inside the house…

was someone we thought was on our side.
