Chapter 5: The Man From Her Past
My father kept staring at the photograph.
I had never seen him look that way before.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Afraid.
The picture was old, the edges worn and slightly bent. Claire looked younger in it. Her hair was shorter. Her smile was different.
A real smile.
Not the one she used when Dad’s friends visited.
Not the one she used when she wanted people to believe everything was perfect.
A different one.
A smile from a life we knew nothing about.
And standing beside her was a man with his hand resting casually on her shoulder.
The note on the back was written in black ink.
*The person who warned me about Daniel.*
My father slowly lowered the picture.
“Where did you find this?””
“In her closet?””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“Where exactly?””
I hesitated.
“In the box with the documents.””
Dad looked away.
He knew.
That box wasn’t filled with random memories.
It was filled with things Claire had hidden.
Things she never wanted discovered.
“Did you recognize him?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Dad stared at the photograph again.
“I do.””
My stomach dropped.
“You do?””
He nodded slowly.
“His name is Michael.””
“Who is he?””
Dad didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than if he had.
Because my father always had answers.
He was the person who fixed broken doors, solved problems, and made bad days feel smaller.
But now he looked like someone who had just opened a door he wished had stayed closed.
“Dad?””
He took a breath.
“Michael was my business partner.””
I felt a chill.
“Was?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Dad placed the picture on the desk.
“Years ago, before I met Claire.””
I waited.
But he stayed quiet.
“Dad?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Michael and I started a company together.””
The words came slowly.
“Everything was going well at first. We were young. We worked nonstop. We thought we were building something huge.””
“What changed?””
Dad looked at the photograph.
“Money.””
One word.
But it carried years behind it.
“He started making decisions without telling me. Moving money. Making deals I didn’t approve of.””
“Did he steal from you?””
Dad didn’t answer right away.
“Yes.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
“He took money from the company.””
“How much?””
“Enough that it nearly destroyed everything.””
I sat silently.
I had never heard this story.
Not once.
“Did you go to the police?””
Dad nodded.
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“He disappeared.””
The room became quiet.
“Then why is he with Claire?””
That was the question.
The one that mattered.
Dad looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
A few minutes later, Melissa arrived.
Dad showed her the photograph immediately.
The moment she saw it, her expression changed.
“You know him?””
“No,” Dad said.
“But I know who he is.””
He handed her the picture.
She studied it carefully.
“Michael Reeves.””
“You know the name?””
“I’ve heard it.””
Dad looked surprised.
“From where?””
Melissa placed the photograph on the table.
“Financial investigations.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Dad.
“Before we jump to conclusions, I need more information.””
Dad nodded.
“Tell me what you know.””
Melissa sat down.
“Michael Reeves was involved in several business disputes years ago. Nothing criminal was proven after he disappeared.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“He stole from me.””
“Yes. And after that, several people reported similar patterns.””
“What patterns?””
“Trust. Partnerships. Financial control.””
The room went silent.
Dad looked toward the stairs.
Toward Claire’s room.
“She knew him.””
Melissa nodded.
“Apparently.””
“But why?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
A message.
*You need to know the truth about your stepmother.*
My heart stopped.
I showed Dad.
His expression changed immediately.
“Don’t reply.””
“I wasn’t going to.””
Another message appeared.
*She is not who your father thinks she is.*
Then another.
*Ask her why she was with Michael before she met him.*
Dad looked at Melissa.
“Can you trace this?””
She took the phone.
“I’ll try.””
Before she could do anything, a fourth message appeared.
This one was different.
Shorter.
More frightening.
*She knows you found the picture.*
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
Because at that exact moment—
Claire was standing there.
Watching us.
I didn’t know how long she had been there.
But she had seen the phone.
She had seen the photograph.
Her face was unreadable.
Then she said:
“Who sent that?””
Nobody answered.
She walked closer.
“Who sent the message?””
Dad stood.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“Who?””
“Why does Michael Reeves know you?””
The second he said the name, everything changed.
Claire froze.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Frozen.
Like she had been waiting years for someone to say it.
“I told you,” she whispered.
Dad stared.
“What?””
“I told you he would come back.””
The room went silent.
Melissa stood.
“Mrs. Carter.””
Claire looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Claire looked at Dad.
Not us.
Only him.
“You think I’m the problem.””
Dad didn’t answer.
“But you don’t know what Michael is capable of.””
Dad’s face hardened.
“Then why are you in a picture with him?””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“Because I knew him.””
“How?””
Silence.
Then Claire said:
“He was my fiancé.””
Nobody moved.
The words landed like something breaking.
My father stared at her.
“Your fiancé?””
“Yes.””
“Before me?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
Claire looked away.
“Before the wedding.””
Dad laughed bitterly.
“Before the wedding?””
She stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You married me while hiding that you were connected to the man who destroyed my company.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it?””
Claire looked desperate.
“I left him.””
“Why?””
“Because I found out what he was doing.””
Dad stared.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“About the money?””
“Yes.””
The silence was unbearable.
“You knew he stole from me?””
Claire nodded.
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
“I was trying to escape him.””
My anger rose.
“Then why didn’t you tell Dad?””
Claire looked at me.
And for a second, she looked genuinely hurt.
“Because I was scared.””
Nobody expected that.
Not even Dad.
“Scared of what?””
Claire looked at the photograph.
“Michael doesn’t let people leave.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Dad lowered his voice.
“Then why did he write that you warned him about me?””
Claire looked confused.
“What?””
Dad turned the photograph around.
She saw the note.
Her face changed.
“That’s not my handwriting.””
“Then whose is it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Melissa picked up the picture.
“The note may not have been written by her.””
Dad looked at her.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone wanted you to believe Claire and Michael were connected.””
“But they were.””
“Yes.””
Melissa looked at the photograph.
“But that doesn’t explain the note.””
Everyone became quiet.
Because that was the problem.
There were too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
And someone was clearly moving behind the scenes.
That night, Claire sat across from us at the table.
For the first time since I knew her, she looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not in control.
Just tired.
Dad asked questions.
She answered some.
Avoided others.
But one thing became clear.
Michael had not appeared by accident.
He was connected to everything.
The money.
The documents.
The warnings.
The fear.
Before leaving, Melissa pulled Dad aside.
“I found something.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
She handed him a folder.
“I traced the financial documents from Claire’s closet.””
“And?””
“They weren’t created recently.””
Dad frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“They were prepared before she married you.””
The room went silent.
Dad stared at the folder.
“That’s impossible.””
Melissa shook her head.
“No.””
She opened it.
“The date is clear.””
My father looked at the document.
Then at Claire.
His voice barely came out.
“Claire…”
She looked up.
“Yes?””
He held the paper.
“Why did you prepare documents controlling my finances…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“…six months before we even met?””
