Chapter 7: The Promise She Never Told Us About
Claire stared at the message.
The phone screen illuminated her face in the darkness.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The power was still out.
The house was silent.
But somehow, that small message felt louder than anything else that had happened.
*You promised you’d finish the job.*
Dad slowly stepped closer.
“Claire.””
She didn’t respond.
“Who sent that?””
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not because we wanted to accuse her.
Because we had heard that sentence too many times.
I don’t know.
I can explain.
It’s not what it looks like.
But every explanation only revealed another secret.
Dad held out his hand.
“Give me the phone.””
Claire hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than words could.
“Claire.””
She slowly handed it over.
Dad looked at the screen.
Then at Melissa.
“Can you trace this?””
“I’ll try.””
She took the phone.
Claire stood suddenly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
“You can’t.””
Melissa frowned.
“Why?””
Claire looked terrified.
“Because if you trace it…”
She stopped.
Dad’s voice was quiet.
“If I trace it, what?””
Claire looked down.
“If you trace it, he’ll know.””
The room went still.
Dad stared.
“Who?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Who will know?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“Michael.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because until that moment, Michael had been a person in old photographs and hidden documents.
But Claire’s reaction made him real.
He wasn’t just someone from the past.
He was someone who was still present.
Dad looked at her.
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Stop saying that.””
“I don’t!””
Her voice cracked.
“I don’t know where he is.””
The anger in the room disappeared for a second.
Because she sounded genuinely afraid.
Melissa noticed too.
She lowered the phone.
“Claire, if Michael is contacting you, we need to understand why.””
Claire sat down.
Slowly.
Like her legs couldn’t hold her anymore.
“I thought I was done with him.””
Dad remained standing.
“Then tell us everything.””
She looked at him.
“I tried.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“But you told us pieces.””
She looked away.
“You’re right.””
The admission surprised everyone.
Claire took a deep breath.
“When I left Michael, I didn’t just leave him.””
“What do you mean?””
“I left everything connected to him.””
Dad frowned.
“His business?””
“Yes.””
“His money?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you have documents about financial control?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“Because Michael taught me to always have an exit plan.””
Dad shook his head.
“An exit plan that involved my accounts.””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Melissa stepped closer.
“Claire.””
She looked up.
“You need to tell us the truth now.””
For a moment, Claire looked like she might refuse.
Then she said:
“Michael wanted me to marry someone.””
My stomach tightened.
Dad stared.
“What?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Before I met you, Michael told me he had a way to recover what he lost.””
Dad’s face changed.
“What he lost from me?””
She nodded.
“He blamed you.””
“Why?””
“Because after you reported him, he lost everything.””
Dad looked away.
Claire continued.
“He said you ruined his life.””
“And he wanted revenge.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My hands became cold.
“Was I part of the revenge?””
Claire looked at me.
“No.””
“But Dad was.””
Her silence hurt.
Dad looked at her.
“Did you marry me because Michael wanted you to?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“I married you because I fell in love with you.””
Dad didn’t react.
“That doesn’t explain the documents.””
“I know.””
“Or the lies.””
“I know.””
“Or why he contacted you before our wedding.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Dad shook his head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because I knew what you would do.””
“What?””
“You would confront him.””
Dad didn’t deny it.
“And?””
“And I knew Michael was dangerous.””
Silence.
Then Melissa asked:
“Did Michael ever threaten you?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After I told him I was marrying Daniel.””
Dad froze.
“He threatened you?””
Claire nodded.
“He said if I didn’t do what he wanted, he would destroy everything.””
“What did he want?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“He wanted access.””
“To what?””
She looked at Dad.
“Your company.””
The words hit hard.
Dad stepped back.
“So that’s it.””
“No.””
“You married me to get information.””
“No.””
“You gained my trust.””
“No.””
“You prepared financial documents.””
“I was scared.””
“You hid him.””
“I was trying to stop him.””
Dad laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Claire started crying.
“I know how it looks.””
“Because it’s exactly how it happened.””
She covered her face.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan quietly asked:
“Why did you hurt us?””
Everyone turned.
Claire looked at him.
My brother’s voice shook.
“If you were scared of Michael…”
He swallowed.
“Why were you mean to us?””
That question was different.
Because it wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about documents.
It was about pain.
Claire looked at Ethan.
And for the first time, she had no defense.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan looked confused.
“What?””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“I don’t know why I did some of those things.””
Dad stared at her.
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
She looked at the floor.
“I think…”
She stopped.
Then tried again.
“I think I started becoming like him.””
The sentence shocked everyone.
Claire continued.
“Michael controlled people by making them afraid.””
She looked at the locked refrigerator.
“At first, I hated that about him.””
Her voice became quieter.
“But then I realized fear worked.””
Dad said nothing.
“I was afraid of losing control.””
“So you controlled us.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was painful.
But it was the first honest thing she had said.
I looked at Ethan.
He was staring at her.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
And somehow that seemed worse.
A few minutes later, the power returned.
The lights flickered back on.
And everything looked normal again.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same house.
But nothing was normal anymore.
Melissa’s phone suddenly rang.
She answered.
“Hello?””
She listened.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
Dad immediately noticed.
“What happened?””
Melissa covered the phone.
“The trace came back.””
Everyone became silent.
“Who sent it?””
She looked at Claire.
Then at Dad.
“It wasn’t Michael.””
My heart dropped.
“Then who?””
Melissa looked down at her phone.
“The number belongs to someone else.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Someone who died three years ago.””
Nobody spoke.
Dad frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
Melissa shook her head.
“I thought so too.””
She handed him the phone.
The name appeared on the screen.
A name Claire recognized instantly.
Her face went completely white.
“No.””
Dad looked at her.
“Who is it?””
Claire whispered:
“That’s not possible.””
“Who?””
Her voice barely came out.
“Michael’s sister.””
The room froze.
Dad stared at the name.
“His sister died?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then who sent the message?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was only one possibility.
Someone was pretending to be dead.
Melissa looked at the phone again.
“There’s one more thing.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
“The message wasn’t sent today.””
A pause.
“It was scheduled.””
My stomach turned.
“When was it scheduled?””
Melissa looked at the timestamp.
Her face became serious.
“Three years ago.””
Dad stared.
“Why would someone schedule a message for today?””
No one knew.
Until Claire suddenly stood.
She looked toward the front door.
Her breathing changed.
Because she remembered something.
Something she had forgotten.
Something she had buried.
“Oh my God.””
Dad stepped toward her.
“What?””
Claire looked terrified.
“The date.””
“What about it?””
She whispered:
“Today is the anniversary.””
“Of what?””
Claire looked at the photograph of Michael.
And said the words that made my entire body go cold.
May you like
“Today is the day Michael disappeared.””
A moment later, someone knocked on the front door.
