Chapter 9: The Truth Buried With Thomas Carter
The drive to Thomas Carter’s old property felt endless.
The entire way there, I stared out the window and tried to understand what Mr. Bennett had told me.
Evelyn was there.
At the place where Daniel had been searching for answers.
The same woman who claimed she wanted to protect her son.
The same woman who tried to take my home.
The same woman who had spent six months telling me to stop looking for him.
But there was one question I couldn’t escape.
Why?
Why would she be there if she was the person Daniel feared?
And why would Daniel’s lawyer know about it before the police did?
Every answer led to another question.
Every secret opened a deeper one.
When we finally arrived, the sky was already dark.
Thomas Carter’s old property sat near the coastline, hidden behind a long private road.
I had never been there before.
Daniel had told me about it.
A small family retreat.
A place where his father used to spend weekends.
A place where Daniel had scattered his father’s ashes after his funeral.
The place where he had supposedly said goodbye.
Now it looked abandoned.
The house stood quietly among the trees.
Windows dark.
Garden overgrown.
A place forgotten by time.
But someone had been here recently.
Police vehicles surrounded the property.
Detective Harris was waiting outside.
When he saw me, his expression changed.
“Claire.””
“Where is she?””
He didn’t ask who.
He knew.
“She’s inside.””
“And Daniel?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“We haven’t found him yet.””
My heart sank.
“Then why did you say you found someone?””
Detective Harris looked toward the house.
“Because we found evidence someone was here.””
“What kind?””
He hesitated.
“Evidence that Daniel was alive when he came here.””
A small piece of hope appeared.
Then disappeared.
“When?””
“Two days ago.””
Two days.
Daniel had been here two days ago.
Alive.
Searching.
Still fighting.
I looked toward the house.
“I’m going inside.””
Detective Harris stepped in front of me.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I’m done standing outside while everyone else decides what I’m allowed to know.””
He studied my face.
Then stepped aside.
“Stay close.””
Inside, the house smelled like dust and old wood.
But beneath that was something else.
Coffee.
Fresh coffee.
Someone had been living here.
Recently.
Detective Harris led us through the hallway.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
Thomas Carter.
Young Daniel.
A younger Evelyn.
A family that looked normal.
Happy.
A family hiding something.
We entered the study.
And I immediately knew this was where Daniel had been.
The room was filled with papers.
Old records.
Photographs.
Documents spread across the desk.
Someone had searched through everything.
Or someone had been searching.
Detective Harris pointed toward the table.
“We found these.””
I walked closer.
There were financial records.
The same kind Daniel had been investigating.
And then I saw something that made my stomach drop.
A photograph.
Thomas Carter standing beside another man.
A man I recognized.
My breath caught.
“Who is that?””
Mr. Bennett looked at the picture.
His face changed.
“Robert.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“Who is Robert?””
Mr. Bennett slowly sat down.
“Thomas’s business partner.””
“And?””
He swallowed.
“And Evelyn’s brother.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the photograph again.
A family connection.
Another piece.
Another secret.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Nobody answered.
Because they knew.
They all knew.
I picked up another document.
It was a copy of a company transfer.
The date was fifteen years ago.
The year Thomas died.
My eyes moved down the page.
And then I froze.
The signature.
It wasn’t Thomas’s.
“This is fake.””
Detective Harris stepped closer.
“What?””
“This signature.””
I pointed.
“It’s not real.””
Mr. Bennett looked at the document.
His expression changed.
“Where did you find this?””
“Here.””
He stared at it.
“Claire…”
“What?””
“This is the document that started everything.””
“What do you mean?””
He looked at me.
“The day Thomas died, ownership of his company changed.””
I felt cold.
“To who?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Evelyn?””
He nodded.
“She inherited control.””
The room became silent.
My mind raced.
Evelyn had spent years controlling everything.
Daniel’s father’s company.
Daniel’s finances.
Daniel’s secrets.
And now she wanted my house.
But there was still something missing.
“Where is Daniel?””
Before anyone could answer, a sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Everyone froze.
Detective Harris immediately raised his hand.
The officers moved.
I stood still.
Listening.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming down the stairs.
Then a figure appeared.
Evelyn.
She looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Broken.
The moment she saw me, her face changed.
“Claire.””
I stared at her.
“What are you doing here?””
She looked at the room.
Then at the documents.
“You shouldn’t have come.””
I almost laughed.
“You really don’t understand me, do you?””
Her eyebrows tightened.
“I’m trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You’re trying to control me.””
She looked hurt.
For a second.
Only a second.
Then it disappeared.
“Daniel never wanted you involved.””
“Daniel never wanted me lied to.””
Her face fell.
That hit her.
Good.
I stepped closer.
“You knew he was alive.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“You admit that?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you report it?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Daniel asked me not to.””
I shook my head.
“You keep using his name like it excuses everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
Finally, she whispered:
“Daniel found out his father didn’t die naturally.””
My heart stopped.
“I know.””
She looked surprised.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
She looked around.
Then laughed quietly.
“Then you know more than I expected.””
“Who killed him?””
Her face became serious.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
She noticed.
“I’m telling the truth.””
“Then why were you here?””
She looked toward the documents.
“Because Daniel found the last piece.””
“What piece?””
“The evidence that proves who did it.””
The room became still.
“Where is it?””
Evelyn looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“Stop lying!””
My voice echoed.
For the first time, Evelyn looked scared of me.
Not angry.
Scared.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel had it.””
My heart jumped.
“Where is Daniel?””
She didn’t answer.
“Where is my husband?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
And then she said something I never expected.
“He was here.””
“When?””
“Three nights ago.””
“Then where did he go?””
Evelyn looked at the floor.
“He left because someone found us.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
Then suddenly, the lights in the house went out.
Again.
Darkness.
A scream came from upstairs.
Everyone moved at once.
Detective Harris grabbed his flashlight.
“What was that?””
Nobody answered.
The officers rushed toward the stairs.
I followed.
Because I already knew.
Something was wrong.
We reached the upstairs hallway.
A bedroom door was open.
Inside was a small room.
Thomas Carter’s old bedroom.
And on the floor…
Was a phone.
Daniel’s phone.
The same phone that disappeared from my mansion.
Detective Harris picked it up carefully.
“It’s recording.””
My heart stopped.
A voice came through the speaker.
Daniel.
Weak.
Distorted.
But alive.
“Claire…”
I covered my mouth.
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“If you found this…”
Static.
A breath.
“Then they finally know.””
I stepped closer.
“Daniel?””
The recording continued.
“Claire, I need you to understand something.””
The sound cracked.
“I wasn’t hiding from the person who wanted me gone.””
A pause.
“I was hiding from the person who knew exactly where I would run.””
My heart raced.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“The person behind this was never my mother.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked just as shocked.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“It was the one person I thought I could trust.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mr. Bennett slowly turned toward me.
His face was pale.
Because he understood before anyone else.
The phone had been found.
The message had been recorded.
The evidence had been planted.
And whoever did it wanted us to hear Daniel’s final words.
Detective Harris looked at everyone in the room.
Then his eyes stopped on one person.
Mr. Bennett.
Because the phone on the floor…
Had fingerprints.
And they weren’t Daniel’s.
They weren’t Evelyn’s.
They belonged to the person who had just brought us here.
May you like
The person who had claimed he was protecting me.
Mr. Bennett.
