Chapter 5: The Message in Lily’s Room

I don’t remember the drive home.

I remember the rain.

That was the strange part.

Miami rarely looked sad, but that night it did.

The streets were wet.

The palm trees moved violently in the wind.

The city lights reflected across the windshield like broken pieces of glass.

I sat in the passenger seat while Detective Harris drove.

My hands were wrapped around Daniel’s letter.

I had read the final sentence so many times that the words felt burned into my mind.

Find out what happened to my father.

Daniel’s father.

A man who had supposedly died peacefully.

A man whose funeral I attended.

A man whose death had never seemed suspicious.

Until now.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I looked up.

Detective Harris glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

“You haven’t said anything for ten minutes.””

I looked back down at the letter.

“I’m trying to understand how my entire marriage could have secrets I never knew about.””

He was quiet.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Sometimes people hide things because they’re protecting someone.””

I looked at him.

“And sometimes?””

He turned his eyes back to the road.

“Sometimes they hide things because they’re protecting themselves.””

The sentence stayed with me.

Because I had spent the last six months believing I was searching for my missing husband.

Now I wondered if I had been searching for the truth about the man I married.

When we arrived at the mansion, the front gate was open.

That alone made my stomach drop.

I had always been careful about security.

After Daniel disappeared, I had upgraded everything.

Cameras.

Locks.

Motion sensors.

Nobody should have been able to enter.

Detective Harris noticed my expression.

“Was the gate like this when you left?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He immediately reached for his radio.

Two officers moved ahead.

The mansion looked exactly as I remembered it.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Silent.

But something about it felt wrong.

Like someone had walked through our home and touched things they had no right to touch.

The front door was open.

The same door where Daniel used to kiss me goodbye every morning.

The same door Evelyn had walked through hundreds of times.

Now it looked like an entrance to somewhere dangerous.

“Stay behind us,” Detective Harris said.

I nodded.

We entered.

The living room was a disaster.

Drawers were open.

Cushions were thrown onto the floor.

Cabinet doors hung open.

But nothing looked stolen.

The television was still there.

The jewelry box on the side table was untouched.

The expensive artwork remained on the walls.

Whoever came here wasn’t looking for money.

They were searching.

My heart started racing.

“Lily,” I whispered.

Detective Harris turned immediately.

“She’s safe. Your neighbor took her to her house after the police arrived.””

I closed my eyes in relief.

For one second, I forgot everything else.

My daughter was safe.

That was all that mattered.

Then I remembered.

The message.

Her bedroom.

I ran toward the stairs.

“Mrs. Carter!””

I ignored him.

I needed to see it myself.

I needed to know.

The hallway looked normal.

The family photos still hung on the walls.

Daniel smiling beside me.

Lily missing her front teeth.

Christmas mornings.

Beach vacations.

A life that suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.

Then I reached Lily’s door.

And stopped.

Because the door was open.

I had closed it before leaving.

Slowly, I pushed it wider.

The room looked untouched.

Her stuffed animals sat on the bed.

Her books were neatly arranged.

Her little night light glowed softly in the corner.

For a moment, I thought maybe the detective was wrong.

Then I saw the wall.

Above Lily’s bed.

Written in thick black marker.

The words were enormous.

*DANIEL SHOULD HAVE NEVER TOLD YOU THE TRUTH.*

I covered my mouth.

My knees weakened.

Not because of the message.

Because of where it was written.

Right above my daughter’s pillow.

Someone had stood here.

Someone had looked at my child’s bed.

Someone had wanted me to imagine them doing it.

Detective Harris entered behind me.

His expression changed.

“This was done to scare you.””

I stared at the words.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“This isn’t just fear.””

I touched the wall lightly.

“This is a warning.””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew I was right.

The next morning, the mansion felt like a crime scene.

Not a home.

Officers searched every room.

Technicians collected fingerprints.

Security experts checked the cameras.

I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee I hadn’t touched.

Lily was beside me, drawing pictures.

She had no idea how close our lives had come to changing forever.

“Mommy?””

I looked at her.

“Yes?””

“Is Daddy in trouble?””

The question hurt.

I swallowed.

“Why do you ask?””

She kept coloring.

“Because everyone keeps whispering.””

Children always heard everything.

Even when adults thought they didn’t.

I reached over and held her hand.

“Daddy loves you.””

She looked at me.

“Then why did he leave?””

I didn’t have an answer.

So I gave her the only honest one.

“I think Daddy was trying to protect us.””

She thought about that.

Then nodded.

“Like superheroes?””

A small smile appeared on my face.

“Yeah.””

“Then he’ll come back.””

My heart broke.

Because I wanted to believe that too.

Later that afternoon, Mr. Bennett arrived.

He looked exhausted.

He placed several files on the table.

“I’ve been reviewing Daniel’s financial records.””

I sat up.

“What did you find?””

He hesitated.

“There are accounts you didn’t know about.””

I felt numb.

“How many?””

“Three.””

“Why?””

“That’s what we need to determine.””

I stared at the files.

“Was Daniel hiding money from me?””

Mr. Bennett shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

He opened one folder.

“The accounts weren’t used for personal expenses.””

“Then what were they for?””

He slid a document toward me.

My eyes moved across the page.

And I froze.

The account had payments.

Large payments.

To a private investigator.

My voice became quiet.

“Daniel hired someone?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Mr. Bennett looked at the date.

“Two months before he disappeared.””

I looked at the numbers.

Two months.

Daniel had been investigating something before he vanished.

“What was he looking into?””

Mr. Bennett opened another page.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s impossible.””

“The investigator’s files are missing.””

My stomach tightened.

“Missing?””

“Yes.””

“Who had access?””

He looked at me.

“Only three people.””

I already knew.

“Who?””

“Daniel.””

“Me?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Your mother-in-law.””

The room went silent.

I looked toward the window.

The ocean was calm.

Almost mocking me.

Evelyn.

Again.

Always Evelyn.

“Where is she?””

Mr. Bennett looked uncomfortable.

“She left.””

My head snapped toward him.

“What?””

“She left Miami this morning.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Where did she go?””

“We’re trying to find out.””

I stood.

“No.””

Mr. Bennett looked surprised.

“What?””

“I’m done waiting for people to tell me pieces of the truth.””

I grabbed Daniel’s letter.

“I’m going to find answers myself.””

That night, after Lily fell asleep, I sat alone in Daniel’s office.

His office.

A room I had barely entered because I always respected his privacy.

Now that privacy felt like a weapon.

I opened drawers.

I checked shelves.

I looked through old files.

Nothing.

Until I noticed something.

A loose piece of wood beneath his desk.

I knelt down.

My fingers touched the edge.

A hidden compartment.

My heart started beating faster.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

*Claire.*

Again.

I opened it.

This time, there was no long explanation.

Only one sentence.

If you found this, it means my mother failed to stop you.

I stopped breathing.

Below it was another line.

The truth about my father is hidden where we said goodbye.

I stared at the words.

Where we said goodbye.

I knew exactly what Daniel meant.

The place we went every year.

The place where his father’s ashes were scattered.

The place where Daniel had cried in my arms fifteen years ago.

The beach.

But before I could read further, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

My entire body went still.

I answered.

“Hello?””

No response.

Then a woman’s voice whispered.

Not Evelyn.

Someone else.

Someone terrified.

“Claire…”

I stood.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“You don’t know me, but I knew Daniel.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Where is my husband?””

A pause.

Then:

“He’s alive.””

My heart stopped.

“Who are you?””

The woman whispered:

“I’m the person who helped him disappear.””

I couldn’t speak.

Then she said the one thing that made my blood turn cold.

“Claire, you need to leave that house immediately.””

“Why?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because the person who tried to scare you tonight…”

A pause.

“…wasn’t trying to find Daniel’s secret.””

I looked around the dark office.

“What were they trying to find?””

The woman answered:

“They were trying to find you.””

The call ended.

May you like

And at that exact moment…

The lights in the mansion went out.
