Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Daniel’s Disappearance
The message on the back of the photograph burned into my mind.
*Ask her why.*
Three words.
Three impossible words.
I stared at the handwriting until the letters blurred.
Daniel’s handwriting.
I knew it.
I had seen it on birthday cards, grocery lists, love notes stuck to the refrigerator, and the little messages he used to leave beside my coffee cup every morning.
Have a good day, beautiful.
Don’t forget Lily’s dentist appointment.
I love you.
The same handwriting was now telling me to question the woman standing ten feet away from me.
The woman who had thrown a birthday cake at me.
The woman who had tried to take my home.
The woman who claimed she knew nothing about my missing husband.
Evelyn.
She looked at the photograph in Mr. Bennett’s hand.
Then she looked at me.
And I saw it.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
“Give me that,” she said.
Her voice was sharp.
Mr. Bennett didn’t move.
“I think this belongs with Claire.””
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
The officers immediately became more alert.
One of them stepped forward.
“Ma’am, you need to calm down.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I am calm.””
She wasn’t.
Her hands were shaking.
Just slightly.
But enough.
I noticed because I had spent ten years learning every expression on her face.
Every fake smile.
Every forced laugh.
Every moment she pretended to be kind.
I turned toward her.
“What does it mean?””
She didn’t answer.
My voice became louder.
“What does ‘Ask her why’ mean?””
The guests shifted uncomfortably.
Nobody wanted to be part of this anymore.
The birthday party had become something else entirely.
A crime scene.
A confession waiting to happen.
Evelyn looked at me.
Then she looked at Lily.
And something changed.
“You need to take your daughter upstairs.””
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to give me instructions anymore.””
Her expression hardened.
“You have no idea what Daniel was involved in.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
“Tell me where my husband is.””
Another silence.
“Tell me why you kept that photograph.””
Evelyn looked away.
That was the answer.
Not with words.
With hesitation.
Mr. Bennett noticed too.
“Mrs. Carter, I suggest you start explaining.””
She laughed quietly.
A tired, bitter sound.
“You think I’m the villain.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody had said that.
She had.
“I protected Daniel his whole life,” she continued.
“And this is the thanks I get.””
I stared at her.
“Protected him from what?””
She looked directly at me.
“From people like you.””
My heart twisted.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at me.
“You came into his life and changed everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Daniel chose me.””
“Did he?””
The question hit harder than it should have.
Because there was something underneath it.
Something she knew.
Something I didn’t.
I looked at the officers.
Then at Mr. Bennett.
“I need to know what happened.””
Mr. Bennett nodded.
“We need to separate facts from accusations.””
He turned toward Evelyn.
“Start with when you last saw Daniel.””
Her face changed.
For the first time, she looked like a mother instead of an enemy.
“He came to see me the night before he disappeared.””
My breath caught.
“You never told me that.””
Evelyn ignored me.
“He was upset.””
“About what?””
She looked at the floor.
“He said he had made a mistake.””
The room became colder.
“What mistake?””
She didn’t answer.
“Evelyn.””
She closed her eyes.
“He said he had to fix something before it destroyed his family.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes opened.
“Because he asked me not to.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
It came out as a whisper.
“Daniel would never disappear and leave me believing he was dead.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“You don’t know what Daniel was capable of.””
I hated that sentence.
Because a small part of me wondered if it was true.
Not because I thought Daniel was cruel.
But because I was beginning to understand how much I didn’t know.
I thought I knew my husband.
I thought I knew every part of his life.
But maybe I only knew the version he wanted me to see.
My phone remained in my hand.
I looked at the call history.
The unknown number.
The three seconds of silence before his voice.
The warning.
Don’t trust my mother.
I looked back at Evelyn.
“Where is he?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not lying.””
“Then why did he say you knew he was alive?””
That sentence changed everything.
The color drained from her face.
The officers noticed.
Mr. Bennett noticed.
I noticed.
Evelyn slowly sat down.
For the first time that night, she looked old.
Not sixty.
Older.
Like she had been carrying something heavy for a very long time.
“He called me.””
Nobody spoke.
She continued quietly.
“Three weeks after he disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“You talked to him?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Her eyes filled with something I couldn’t identify.
Regret.
Maybe.
Fear.
Definitely.
“He begged me not to tell anyone.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he thought someone was watching him.””
The room went silent.
Mr. Bennett frowned.
“Who?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I don’t care what you believe.””
Her voice cracked.
“I’m telling you what happened.””
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I wondered if maybe Evelyn wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.
“What did Daniel say?””
She looked toward the window.
The Miami skyline glittered in the distance.
Beautiful.
Peaceful.
A complete lie.
“He said he found something.””
“What?””
“He wouldn’t tell me.””
“Why?””
“Because he said if I knew too much, I could become a target.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What kind of thing?””
Evelyn looked back at me.
“He said it involved money.””
I frowned.
“Money?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel wasn’t hiding money from me.””
She didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than any accusation.
“Was he?””
Evelyn looked away.
And I knew.
There was something.
Something Daniel had never told me.
Mr. Bennett opened his file.
“Claire, before Daniel disappeared, did he ever mention financial problems?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Business issues?””
“No.””
“Enemies?””
“No.””
Every answer felt heavier.
Because every answer made me realize how little I knew.
Then Lily spoke.
Quietly.
“Mommy?””
Everyone turned.
She was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
I had forgotten she was there.
I immediately walked toward her.
“Sweetheart, you were supposed to stay upstairs.””
She looked scared.
“I heard Daddy’s voice.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked at the phone in my hand.
“Was that Daddy?””
I didn’t know what to say.
Children always notice the things adults try hardest to hide.
I knelt down.
“Lily…”
She grabbed my hand.
“Is Daddy coming home?””
My eyes filled.
I wanted to say yes.
I wanted to promise her.
But promises had become dangerous.
“I don’t know.””
Her little face fell.
Then she whispered something that made everyone freeze.
“Daddy came to my room before he left.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Evelyn stood up.
“What did you say?””
Lily looked frightened by everyone’s reaction.
I gently held her shoulders.
“Baby, what do you mean?””
She looked at me.
“He came in at night.””
“When?””
“Before he disappeared.””
My heart raced.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because Daddy told me not to.””
The room went completely silent.
“What did he tell you?”” I asked softly.
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“He said if Grandma asked me questions…”
She stopped.
I felt a chill.
“What questions?””
Lily looked toward Evelyn.
Then back at me.
“He said not to tell Grandma where he hid the box.””
Nobody moved.
A box.
My mind raced.
“What box?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.
“What box?””
Her voice was different.
Not angry.
Panicked.
Mr. Bennett immediately noticed.
“Mrs. Carter.””
She stopped.
But it was too late.
Because her reaction told us everything.
She knew.
Or at least…
She knew enough.
I looked at her.
“You know what box she’s talking about.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“Don’t you?””
Her silence was the answer.
I turned toward Mr. Bennett.
“We need to find that box.””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Then one of the officers’ radios suddenly crackled.
Everyone looked over.
The officer touched the device.
“Dispatch?””
A voice came through.
“We have a possible update regarding Daniel Carter.””
My heart jumped.
The officer listened.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Everyone froze.
“What is it?”” Mr. Bennett asked.
The officer looked at me.
“We found a vehicle registered to Daniel Carter.””
My breath caught.
“Where?””
The officer hesitated.
“About thirty miles from here.””
“Is he there?””
Another pause.
Then the officer said:
“No.””
My heart sank.
“Then what did you find?””
The officer looked down.
And his next words changed everything.
“Mrs. Carter…”
He swallowed.
“The vehicle was abandoned.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then he added:
“But there was something inside.””
I stepped closer.
“What?””
The officer looked at me.
“A locked metal box.””
My blood ran cold.
Because before he even said the next words…
I already knew.
It was the box Daniel told Lily to hide.
May you like
And whatever was inside…
Was the reason my husband disappeared.
