Chapter 6: The Woman Who Helped Daniel Vanish

Darkness swallowed the mansion.

For one terrifying second, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the ocean outside.

Not the wind against the windows.

Not even my own breathing.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

A dim red glow filled the hallway.

My phone was still pressed against my ear.

The call had ended.

The woman’s final words echoed in my mind.

They were trying to find you.

Not Daniel.

Me.

I stood frozen inside his office, staring at the doorway.

Every instinct told me to move.

To check on Lily.

To get out.

But another part of me—the part that had spent six months searching for answers—wanted to know why.

Why was everyone protecting secrets?

Why had Daniel disappeared?

Why had someone broken into my house?

And why did everyone keep acting like I was the last person who should know the truth?

I grabbed my phone and called Detective Harris.

He answered immediately.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“The power just went out.””

A pause.

“Are you inside the house?””

“Yes.””

“Where is Lily?””

“My neighbor has her.””

“Lock yourself in a room.””

“I’m not doing that.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

I was tired of being afraid.

“I need answers.””

Another pause.

Then he sighed.

“I’m on my way.””

I ended the call.

Before I left the office, I looked back at Daniel’s hidden compartment.

The envelope was still there.

The message inside was still impossible.

The truth about my father is hidden where we said goodbye.

I put the letter into my pocket.

Whatever happened next, I wasn’t going to let anyone take it from me.

The next morning, I met the woman from the phone call.

Not because she wanted to.

Because I found her.

Her name was Rachel Morgan.

She was sitting alone in a small coffee shop thirty minutes outside Miami.

She looked nothing like the person I imagined.

I expected someone confident.

Someone dangerous.

Instead, I saw a woman who looked exhausted.

She kept looking over her shoulder.

She had dark circles beneath her eyes and nervous hands wrapped around a coffee cup she hadn’t touched.

When I approached the table, she immediately stood.

“Claire?””

I nodded.

“You’re Rachel?””

She looked around the café.

“We can’t stay long.””

I sat down.

“I don’t care.””

Her eyes met mine.

“You should.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“You called me. You told me my husband is alive. Now you’re going to explain everything.””

Rachel swallowed.

“You sound like Daniel.””

That caught me off guard.

“What does that mean?””

She sat slowly.

“He was stubborn too.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew him.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Rachel looked down.

“I worked for your father-in-law.””

I froze.

“My father-in-law?””

“Thomas Carter.””

Daniel’s father.

The man who supposedly died from a heart attack.

“When?””

“Before he died.””

I leaned forward.

“What did you do for him?””

Rachel hesitated.

“I was his financial assistant.””

That didn’t sound unusual.

But her expression told me there was more.

“Rachel.””

She closed her eyes.

“Thomas wasn’t just a businessman.””

“What was he?””

“A man who knew too much.””

The answer made my stomach tighten.

“About what?””

She looked at me.

“About the Carter family.””

I almost laughed.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It will.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

My heart jumped.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

She placed it on the table.

“Daniel found this after his father died.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Something Thomas left behind.””

“For Daniel?””

Rachel nodded.

“And when Daniel read it, everything changed.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What was inside?””

Rachel’s face became serious.

“The truth about how Thomas died.””

The café suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

“You’re saying his heart attack wasn’t real?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

I drove home with Rachel beside me.

Neither of us spoke much.

There were too many questions.

Too many impossible pieces.

When we arrived at the mansion, Detective Harris was already there.

He looked surprised when he saw Rachel.

“Who is this?””

I stepped out of the car.

“This is Rachel Morgan.””

His expression changed.

“Rachel Morgan?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“You know me?””

“We’ve been looking for you.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Because she was listed in Daniel Carter’s missing person investigation.””

Rachel looked away.

I turned toward her.

“You never told me that.””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“Because I was trying to stay alive.””

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harris motioned toward the house.

“Inside. Now.””

In the living room, Rachel finally told us everything.

At least, everything she was willing to say.

“I worked for Thomas Carter for eight years.””

She looked at me.

“He trusted me.””

“What happened?””

“He discovered someone was moving money through his company.””

Mr. Bennett, who had arrived moments earlier, leaned forward.

“How much money?””

Rachel gave him a number.

His face changed.

“Millions.””

I stared at her.

“Who was doing it?””

Rachel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not possible.””

“It is when the person controlling everything hides behind other people.””

Detective Harris crossed his arms.

“And Daniel?””

Rachel took a breath.

“Daniel found his father’s old files.””

“What did they reveal?””

“That Thomas knew someone close to him was involved.””

My eyes immediately moved.

To Evelyn.

Rachel noticed.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“You think it was Evelyn?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“I think Daniel thought it was.””

My stomach dropped.

“Thought?””

She nodded.

“Daniel wasn’t sure.””

That surprised me.

“Then why did he disappear?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because someone tried to kill him.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Daniel discovered something in those files.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He found proof that the person responsible for his father’s death was still close to the family.””

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

Rachel looked toward the stairs.

Toward Lily’s room.

Then back at me.

“Daniel never told me the name.””

“Why?””

“Because he said if I knew, I would become a target too.””

Detective Harris frowned.

“Then why help him disappear?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Because he was my friend.””

The answer surprised me.

Not because I doubted her.

Because I realized how many people had been beside Daniel in his final weeks.

And I had known none of them.

“What happened the night he vanished?””

Rachel looked at me.

“He called me.””

“When?””

“The night before police found his abandoned car.””

My breathing slowed.

“What did he say?””

Rachel gripped her coffee cup.

“He said someone was following him.””

“Who?””

“He didn’t know.””

“Then?””

“He asked me to help him hide.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t he come home?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because he believed someone would hurt you and Lily if he did.””

Those words broke something inside me.

Because they sounded exactly like Daniel.

Always protecting us.

Always carrying everything alone.

“Where is he now?””

Rachel hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“You said he’s alive.””

“He was.””

The word terrified me.

“Was?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The last time I saw Daniel was three days ago.””

My heart stopped.

Three days.

He had been alive three days ago.

“Where?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“He came to me because he needed the box.””

“The box?””

“The one police found.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

“That means someone already knew about it.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Her face changed.

Like she was afraid to say it.

“Daniel told me one thing before he left.””

“What?””

She looked directly at me.

“He said the person who wanted the box wasn’t looking for evidence.””

A chill moved through the room.

“What were they looking for?””

Rachel whispered:

“They were looking for the last thing Thomas Carter left behind.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mr. Bennett suddenly stood.

His face was pale.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Thomas Carter’s final will.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

Mr. Bennett slowly opened his briefcase.

“I handled the estate.””

My heartbeat increased.

“And?””

He swallowed.

“Thomas left a sealed letter.””

“To Daniel?””

“No.””

A pause.

“To you.””

I stared at him.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why would he leave something for me?””

Mr. Bennett reached into his briefcase.

Then he placed an old envelope on the table.

The paper was yellowed.

The seal was still intact.

My name was written across the front.

*Claire Carter.*

I couldn’t breathe.

Because I had never met Thomas Carter before he died.

He had no reason to write to me.

No reason to leave me anything.

Unless…

He knew something.

Something Daniel had been trying to uncover.

Mr. Bennett looked at the envelope.

“There’s one problem.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

His voice became quiet.

“The letter was supposed to be opened only if Daniel disappeared.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who gave you permission to open it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel slowly looked toward the front window.

Her face drained of color.

“Claire…”

I followed her gaze.

A black car was parked outside the mansion.

Watching us.

And then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*Open the letter, or Lily will learn what happened to Daniel the hard way.*
