Chapter 8: The Person I Never Suspected
I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.
*NOW ASK YOURSELF WHO YOU TRUSTED.*
The paper trembled between my fingers.
Because whoever wrote it wasn’t asking me to find the truth.
They were asking me to doubt everyone.
And maybe that was the point.
Daniel had spent months hiding from someone.
Now that same person was trying to make me feel alone.
I walked quickly through the mansion, checking every room.
The kitchen.
The living room.
The hallway.
The guest rooms.
Nothing.
No movement.
No footsteps.
No sign of whoever had entered.
But the feeling remained.
Someone had been inside my home.
Someone had walked through the same rooms where my daughter slept.
Someone had touched Daniel’s things.
And somehow, they had escaped without anyone noticing.
I reached for my phone and called Detective Harris.
He answered after one ring.
“Claire?””
“Someone broke in again.””
Silence.
“What?””
“I found another message.””
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
The word came out quickly.
He paused.
“What do you mean, no?””
“I need to do something first.””
“Claire, you cannot handle this alone.””
I looked at the note.
The words stared back at me.
Who you trusted.
“I know.””
My voice became quieter.
“But I think I already know where to start.””
I found Rachel sleeping on the couch in the guest room.
She had refused to leave after everything happened.
“I’m staying until this is over,” she had said.
I didn’t argue.
Not because I trusted her completely.
Because I didn’t know who I could trust anymore.
I woke her gently.
“Rachel.””
Her eyes opened immediately.
Like she hadn’t really been sleeping.
“What happened?””
I handed her the note.
She read it.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
I watched her carefully.
“You know something.””
She looked up.
“No.””
“Rachel.””
“I don’t.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Everyone keeps saying they don’t know anything, and then I find out they were hiding things.””
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t look angry.
“You think I’m lying?””
“I think everyone is.””
The honesty surprised both of us.
Rachel looked down.
Then she whispered:
“You’re right to question everyone.””
I studied her.
“Even you?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than if she had said no.
“Especially me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She sat up.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.””
Of course.
Another secret.
I almost laughed.
“What is it?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“When Daniel disappeared, he didn’t only ask me for help.””
I waited.
“He asked someone else.””
“Who?””
Her eyes lifted.
“Someone inside your house.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Rachel looked away.
“I don’t know if I should tell you.””
I stood.
“Rachel.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your lawyer.””
The room went silent.
Mr. Bennett.
My mind rejected it immediately.
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“I knew you would say that.””
“Because you’re wrong.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
Mr. Bennett had been Daniel’s lawyer for years.
He helped us buy this house.
He handled our documents.
He helped me after Daniel disappeared.
He was the person who came when I called.
The person who brought the police.
The person who helped expose the forged papers.
But then another thought entered my mind.
He was also the person who knew about the sealed letter.
The person who knew about Thomas.
The person who had access to Daniel’s private information.
My confidence weakened.
“How do you know?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because I saw them together.””
“When?””
“The day before Daniel vanished.””
My heart sank.
“Where?””
“At your father-in-law’s old office.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Daniel told me not to.””
I looked away.
Of course.
Another thing Daniel chose to keep from me.
“Why would he meet Mr. Bennett?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“But you know they were together.””
“Yes.””
“And you know Daniel trusted him.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the note again.
Who you trusted.
Suddenly, the message felt different.
Maybe it wasn’t about who betrayed Daniel.
Maybe it was about who helped him.
I called Mr. Bennett.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?””
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At my office.””
“I need to see you.””
“Is something wrong?””
“Yes.””
Another pause.
“Are you safe?””
The question bothered me.
Not because of the words.
Because of the way he asked.
Like he already knew something had happened.
“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.””
I ended the call.
Rachel looked at me.
“You’re going alone?””
“Yes.””
“That’s dangerous.””
“So is trusting the wrong person.””
Mr. Bennett’s office was empty when I arrived.
Almost too empty.
The receptionist wasn’t there.
The hallway lights were dim.
I walked to his door.
It was slightly open.
“Mr. Bennett?””
No answer.
I pushed the door open.
The room looked normal.
Desk.
Books.
Files.
Computer.
But then I saw it.
A drawer was open.
A drawer that looked like someone had searched through it.
I stepped inside.
“Mr. Bennett?””
Still nothing.
Then I noticed a folder on his desk.
My name was written on it.
*CLAIRE CARTER.*
My hands went cold.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Notes.
My entire life.
Not just Daniel’s.
Mine.
There were records of my childhood.
My parents.
My school.
My finances.
Even old photographs I had never given anyone.
Why would Mr. Bennett have these?
Then I found a page with a date.
Six months before Daniel disappeared.
A meeting.
Between Daniel and Mr. Bennett.
The subject line made my heart stop.
*THOMAS CARTER INVESTIGATION.*
I flipped through the papers.
And then I saw it.
A handwritten note.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Bennett knows more than he admits.
I dropped the paper.
“No.””
A sound came from behind me.
I turned.
Mr. Bennett stood in the doorway.
His face was pale.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he looked at the folder in my hands.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
My heart pounded.
“What is this?””
He closed the door behind him.
“Claire, listen to me.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You explain.””
He looked exhausted.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone said that.
Everyone.
“You were investigating my life?””
“No.””
“Then why do you have all this?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Were you working with Daniel?””
His expression changed.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
“You admit it?””
“I was helping him.””
“Helping him disappear?””
“No.””
His voice became urgent.
“Helping him survive.””
I stared at him.
“Then where is he?””
Mr. Bennett looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel trusted me with something.””
“What?””
He reached into his desk drawer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And pulled out a small object.
A key.
An old brass key.
I recognized it immediately.
Because Daniel had one exactly like it.
“What is that?””
Mr. Bennett looked at it.
“The key to where Thomas Carter hid the final evidence.””
My breathing slowed.
“The beach?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then where?””
He looked at me.
“The place Daniel and I were supposed to meet.””
A chill moved through me.
“When?””
Mr. Bennett’s face tightened.
“The night Daniel vanished.””
The room went silent.
“You were supposed to meet him?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Daniel told me not to.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.””
Mr. Bennett stepped closer.
“Claire, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Daniel didn’t disappear because he was running away.””
I stared at him.
“He disappeared because someone found out what he knew.””
“Who?””
His expression became serious.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“But I know who Daniel suspected.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Mr. Bennett hesitated.
Then he said:
“The person he trusted the most.””
I felt cold.
“Who was that?””
Mr. Bennett looked at the folder.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“You.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
He shook his head quickly.
“Not because Daniel thought you betrayed him.””
“Then why?””
“Because Daniel believed someone was using you.””
My breathing stopped.
“Using me for what?””
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his face changed.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
Then his hand tightened around the phone.
“Where?””
A pause.
“Don’t touch anything.””
He hung up.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
All the color had drained from his face.
“Claire…”
“What?””
“Someone found Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Mr. Bennett swallowed.
“At Thomas Carter’s old property.””
I grabbed my coat.
“Take me there.””
He didn’t move.
“Claire.””
“What?””
His voice became barely audible.
“You need to prepare yourself.””
“For what?””
He looked at me.
“Because Daniel isn’t the only person we found.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who else?””
Mr. Bennett looked away.
“Your mother-in-law.””
May you like
And then he added:
“She’s been there the entire time.””
