Chapter 7: The Hospital Record

I didn’t remember driving to the hospital.

I only remembered standing at the reception desk with shaking hands.

“I need medical records from two years ago.””

The woman behind the desk looked up.

“Are you the patient?””

“Yes.””

She typed my information.

Then paused.

That pause told me something was wrong.

“What?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Your records have restricted access.””

My heart sank.

“Restricted by who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Your husband.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“Daniel Carter?””

She nodded.

“Only he was listed as authorized.””

I stepped back.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

The receptionist lowered her voice.

“Mrs. Carter, your file contains a note requesting no changes without his approval.””

I stared at her.

“No changes?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

My husband had controlled my medical records.

The woman looked at me carefully.

“Would you like to speak with administration?””

“Yes.””

Ten minutes later, I sat across from a hospital administrator named Dr. Lewis.

He opened the file.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Do you remember the night you were admitted?””

I nodded slowly.

“I was told I collapsed.””

Dr. Lewis looked at the papers.

“You were brought in unconscious.””

My hands froze.

“What?””

He looked surprised.

“You weren’t aware?””

“No.””

He turned the page.

“Your husband informed staff you had fallen down the stairs.””

My blood ran cold.

“But I didn’t.””

The doctor studied my face.

“Are you saying that statement was false?””

I couldn’t answer.

Memories came back.

The argument.

Daniel yelling.

Me crying.

Then darkness.

I had always believed I fainted from stress.

But now…

I wasn’t sure.

“Doctor,” I whispered, “did I lose my baby because I fell?””

He was silent.

Then he closed the file.

“There was an investigation.””

My heart stopped.

“What investigation?””

“The hospital questioned the circumstances.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because your injuries didn’t match a simple fall.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

“There were bruises.””

I felt numb.

“Where?””

“Your wrist.””

My wrist.

The same place Daniel grabbed me that night.

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

Dr. Lewis looked sympathetic.

“Mrs. Carter, your husband convinced you to sign a statement saying you had fallen.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember signing anything.””

“Because you were heavily medicated.””

I stood.

“Where is that statement?””

He hesitated.

“I can request access.””

“Do it.””

Two hours later, I held the document in my hands.

My signature was there.

But I barely recognized my own handwriting.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

Daniel Carter.

I felt something inside me go cold.

The man I loved had rewritten my memories.

That evening, I confronted him.

He was still being held for questioning, but his lawyer allowed a short meeting.

Daniel walked in wearing the same confidence.

Until he saw my face.

“You found out.””

Not a question.

A confession.

I sat across from him.

“You knew.””

He said nothing.

“You knew what happened.””

His jaw tightened.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to say my name like you care.””

He leaned back.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand everything now.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stared at him.

“Did you hurt me?””

Silence.

The longest silence of my life.

Then he said:

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””

My heart shattered.

Not because he denied it.

Because he didn’t.

“What does that mean?””

He looked away.

“It was an accident.””

I stood.

“An accident?””

He finally looked at me.

“I was angry.””

The room spun.

“You pushed me.””

“I didn’t mean to.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“You didn’t mean to destroy my life?””

“Emma—”

“You took my baby.””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Then he whispered:

“There’s something else you don’t know.””

I froze.

“What?””

He leaned closer.

“The baby wasn’t the only thing you lost that night.””

My blood went cold.

“What are you talking about?””

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“Your doctor never told you the truth.””

The guard opened the door.

The meeting was over.

May you like

But as I walked away, one question kept repeating in my mind.

What else had Daniel taken from me?
