Chapter 6: The Secret My Sister Buried

The sound of Daniel’s warning followed me long after the police car disappeared.

“There’s something your sister never told you.””

Those words were designed to hurt me.

Daniel knew exactly where to strike.

He knew my biggest weakness had never been money.

It had never been pride.

It had always been trust.

And Rachel had been the last person I believed would betray me.

The restaurant emptied slowly after Daniel was taken away.

People avoided eye contact.

Some looked embarrassed.

Others looked at me with sympathy.

I hated that.

I didn’t want their sympathy.

I wanted the truth.

Rachel stood near the entrance, frozen.

“Emma…”

I looked at her.

“Don’t.””

Her face crumpled.

“I can explain.””

I laughed softly.

“That’s what everyone says when the truth is already impossible to defend.””

She wiped her tears.

“I never wanted this.””

“But you helped him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Rachel looked down.

“I did.””

My hands tightened.

“Then tell me everything.””

She looked around the empty restaurant.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because what I’m going to tell you changes everything.””

I stared at her.

“Rachel, everything already changed.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

We drove to my apartment in silence.

Neither of us spoke.

For once, my sister wasn’t trying to convince me.

She wasn’t making excuses.

She looked broken.

When we entered my apartment, she sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where we had celebrated birthdays.

The same table where I once told her I was lucky to have her.

Now we sat across from each other like strangers.

“Start talking.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Daniel didn’t just threaten me.””

I waited.

“He owned me.””

The words sounded strange.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at her hands.

“Five years ago, before you married him, I made a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

“A financial one.””

I stayed quiet.

“I was working for a company that was losing money. I made a decision I thought would save it.””

She swallowed.

“It made everything worse.””

“How much?””

“Almost two hundred thousand dollars.””

My eyes widened.

“Rachel…”

“I know.””

She started crying.

“I know what it sounds like.””

“It sounds like you committed a crime.””

She nodded.

“I did.””

The room went silent.

“Daniel found out.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“Because he was the one who bought the company records.””

My stomach turned.

“He was watching you before he even met me?””

Rachel nodded.

“He collected information on people. He looked for weaknesses.””

I thought about the folders.

The names.

The files.

“He found out about me too.””

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“What did he know?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Everything.””

I looked away.

For years, I thought Daniel loved me because he knew me.

Now I wondered if he had studied me.

“I didn’t know what kind of person he was,” Rachel whispered.

“When did you realize?””

“After you got married.””

She looked at me.

“The first time I saw him threaten someone.””

I leaned forward.

“Who?””

“His assistant.””

Rachel’s voice lowered.

“She made a mistake at work. Daniel didn’t fire her.””

“What did he do?””

“He showed her a private file he had on her family.””

A chill moved through me.

“He told her he could ruin her life whenever he wanted.””

I closed my eyes.

The man I married wasn’t angry.

He was calculated.

“He told me if I didn’t help him with your divorce plan, he would send my old records to the police.””

I looked at her.

“So you chose yourself.””

Rachel’s tears fell.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I chose fear.””

That answer hurt more.

Because it was honest.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached into her bag.

“I need to show you something else.””

She placed another envelope on the table.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Daniel.

“What is that?””

“Open it.””

Inside was a letter.

I read the first line.

*Rachel, if you are reading this with Emma, then you have betrayed me.*

My heart stopped.

The letter continued.

*You should remember who protected you. You should remember who saved you.*

Then the tone changed.

*But if you think Emma will forgive you, you are wrong. She will see you exactly as I do — weak and selfish.*

I looked at Rachel.

He was trying to destroy us.

Even when he wasn’t there.

The letter ended with one sentence.

*And Emma should know the truth about her marriage before she decides who the real villain is.*

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What truth?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“He never told me.””

I flipped the paper over.

Nothing.

Just a blank page.

Then I noticed something.

A small indentation.

Like something had been written on the paper above it.

I grabbed a pencil.

Slowly, I rubbed the side over the page.

Letters appeared.

A hidden message.

My breathing stopped.

Because the message wasn’t about Rachel.

It was about me.

*Emma’s first child was never lost by accident. Ask your husband what happened in the hospital.*

The pencil fell from my hand.

I looked at Rachel.

“What does that mean?””

Her face turned pale.

“Emma…”

“What does that mean?””

She whispered:

“Daniel knows something about the baby you lost.””

The room became silent.

Because that was the one wound I had never allowed anyone to touch.

The baby I had lost two years into our marriage.

The baby Daniel told me was just “bad luck.””

The baby I cried over alone.

The baby I thought I would never know the truth about.

May you like

And suddenly, for the first time…

I wondered if it had really been an accident.
