Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Mask
Daniel entered the apartment five minutes later.
I never opened the door.
He used his key.
The same key I had given him when we promised to build a life together.
Now it felt like a weapon.
He walked in wearing a clean shirt and expensive cologne.
Like nothing happened.
Like he hadn’t destroyed our marriage the night before.
His eyes moved from me to Rachel.
Then back to me.
“So this is where you ran.””
I crossed my arms.
“You need to leave.””
He smiled.
That smile used to make me feel safe.
Now it made me sick.
“Still angry?””
I stared at him.
“Still arrogant?””
Rachel whispered, “Daniel…”
He looked at her.
“Stay out of this.””
That was when I noticed something.
Rachel flinched.
Not like someone afraid of an angry person.
Like someone afraid of someone who had power over her.
“What did you do?”” I asked.
Daniel looked annoyed.
“What are you talking about?””
“You control everyone around you.””
He laughed.
“You’re being emotional.””
I picked up the photograph.
“Explain this.””
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“That’s not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
He stepped closer.
“Give me that.””
“No.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at Rachel.
And something passed between them.
A silent conversation.
One I wasn’t supposed to see.
That was when I knew.
They had secrets.
“Daniel,” I said slowly, “why were you with another woman at a lawyer’s office?””
He sighed.
“You always make everything worse than it is.””
“Answer me.””
The room went quiet.
Finally, he said:
“Her name is Vanessa.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Rachel whispered:
“Emma…”
I turned.
“What?””
Rachel looked like she wanted to disappear.
Daniel immediately said:
“Don’t.””
That one word confirmed everything.
“You know her.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“How?””
No answer.
“Rachel.””
She started crying.
“I met her through Daniel.””
The room spun.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“You brought another woman into our lives?””
“She was helping with business.””
“Business?””
I pointed at the photo.
“Outside a divorce lawyer?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You don’t know anything about what happens in this marriage.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You’re right. I don’t.””
I looked at Rachel.
“Tell me.””
She shook her head.
“Emma, please.””
“Tell me.””
Her voice broke.
“Daniel wanted to protect his money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He believed if he divorced you, you would take half of everything.””
I stared at Daniel.
After everything.
After building his career with my support.
After I paid his debts.
After I stood beside him when nobody else did.
He thought I was a threat.
“So you were planning to leave me quietly?””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“You would have made it difficult.””
I felt tears rise.
Not sadness.
Anger.
“You planned my entire life without me.””
“You’re being dramatic.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m finally seeing clearly.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You need to be careful.””
There it was.
The threat.
The thing hidden beneath every apology.
Every excuse.
Every argument.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No.””
But his eyes said yes.
He walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“By the way, your name is already removed from one account.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
He smiled slightly.
“You should check your bank statements.””
Then he left.
I immediately grabbed my laptop.
My hands shook as I logged into my account.
The screen loaded.
And my face went pale.
Because the savings account we built together…
The one holding the money for our future…
Was empty.
Almost every dollar was gone.
And underneath the transaction history was a transfer authorization.
Signed electronically.
With my name.
May you like
A signature that looked exactly like mine.
But I had never signed it.
