Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Photograph

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat on the floor of my bedroom, staring at the photograph until the sun came up.

My sister’s name was written there.

Rachel.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

The person who had held my hand on my wedding day.

The person who told me Daniel was “the best thing that ever happened” to me.

I wanted to believe there was an explanation.

I wanted to believe the photo was fake.

But the look on Daniel’s face in that picture wasn’t fake.

He looked happy.

Relaxed.

Like a man who had nothing to hide.

My phone buzzed at 7:12 a.m.

Daniel.

I stared at his name glowing on the screen.

Then I answered.

“What?””

There was silence.

Then his voice.

“Where are you?””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe he thought he still had the right to ask.

“At home.””

“You left last night.””

“Yes.””

“Come back.””

The confidence in his voice shocked me.

Not an apology.

Not regret.

An order.

“Daniel, did you call to say sorry?””

Another pause.

“No.””

Of course not.

“You embarrassed me in front of everyone,” he said.

“You attacked me.””

I closed my eyes.

“You grabbed me first.””

“You kicked me.””

“You threw water in my face.””

“You made my mother cry.””

I laughed quietly.

“Your mother cried?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, she watched you humiliate your wife and said nothing.””

“She was upset because you disrespected her.””

The same circle.

The same excuses.

I looked at the photograph sitting beside me.

“Who is she?””

The silence was immediate.

“What?””

“The woman outside the lawyer’s office.””

My heartbeat increased.

Daniel stopped breathing for a second.

“What photograph?””

That answer told me everything.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.””

“Where did you get that?””

“Why does that matter?””

“Because you’re spying on me.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“You’re not even denying it.””

His voice changed.

“You need to calm down.””

That sentence.

I hated that sentence.

People always said it when they wanted you to stop noticing the truth.

“I’m done calming down,” I said.

Then I hung up.

An hour later, someone knocked on my door.

I froze.

I wasn’t expecting anyone.

When I looked through the peephole, my stomach dropped.

Rachel.

I opened the door halfway.

“What are you doing here?””

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Can I come in?””

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“Please.””

I should have closed the door.

I know that now.

But she was my sister.

The person I had spent my whole life protecting.

I let her inside.

She sat on the couch and started crying.

“I heard about what happened.””

“From who?””

She looked away.

“Daniel.””

Of course.

“He told you I attacked him?””

“He said you lost control.””

I stared at her.

“Did he tell you what he did first?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

“Did he?””

She looked down.

“No.””

I felt something crack inside me.

“You knew.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Emma, I didn’t want to get involved.””

“Get involved?””

I pointed toward the photo.

“You were already involved.””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Where did you find that?””

I stepped closer.

“So it’s real?””

Rachel stood.

“I need to leave.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her hands shook.

“Emma…”

“Tell me.””

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel was going to divorce you.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He was planning to file after your anniversary.””

“Why?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Because he thinks you’re holding him back.””

I felt numb.

“Who is the woman?””

Rachel looked at me.

And that was when I saw the guilt on her face.

“She’s…”

A knock interrupted her.

Both of us froze.

Nobody moved.

Then the door handle slowly turned.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew only one person who had a key.

Daniel’s voice came from the other side.

“Emma.””

Rachel looked terrified.

Daniel knocked again.

“Open the door.””

I stared at my sister.

Then at the door.

And I realized something.

May you like

Rachel wasn’t afraid of Daniel finding her there.

She was afraid of what Daniel would reveal.
