Chapter 5: The Trap He Built for Himself

My birthday party was supposed to be a celebration.

Daniel had planned it months ago.

At least, that was what I thought.

Now I knew the truth.

It wasn’t a party.

It was a performance.

A place where he planned to announce my replacement.

Three days later, I stood outside the expensive restaurant where Daniel had invited everyone.

Mia looked at me.

“You’re sure about this?””

I nodded.

“I need everyone to see who he really is.””

Inside my purse was a copy of every document.

Every message.

Every piece of evidence.

I wasn’t walking in as his wife.

I was walking in as the person who would finally expose him.

When I entered, everyone turned.

Daniel stood near the center of the room.

For a moment, he looked surprised.

Then he smiled.

A fake, perfect smile.

“Emma.””

The room went quiet.

He walked toward me.

“You came.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He lowered his voice.

“I knew you would come back.””

I almost smiled.

“You really believe that, don’t you?””

His expression shifted.

“What?””

“That I always come back.””

He stared at me.

Then forced a laugh.

“Let’s not ruin your birthday.””

The guests watched.

Most of them probably thought we were having a normal marital disagreement.

They didn’t know.

They didn’t know what happened behind closed doors.

Daniel raised a glass.

“To my amazing wife.””

I felt sick.

“To the woman who has supported me through everything.””

People smiled.

Some even clapped.

Then he continued.

“Unfortunately, sometimes people change.””

The room became quieter.

I looked at him.

There it was.

The moment.

The beginning of his plan.

“I wanted tonight to be honest,” he said.

He reached for Vanessa’s hand.

She stepped forward.

My chest tightened, but I didn’t react.

Daniel looked at everyone.

“Some relationships end.””

A few people gasped.

Someone whispered my name.

Then Daniel said:

“Emma and I have decided to separate.””

Silence.

I looked around the room.

Then I laughed.

Everyone stared.

Daniel frowned.

“What’s funny?””

I walked toward the table.

“Nothing.””

I placed a folder down.

“Actually, I think tonight should be honest.””

His face changed.

“What is that?””

“Your plan.””

He went still.

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the documents.

His documents.

The room erupted in whispers.

Daniel grabbed one page.

His face turned pale.

“Where did you get this?””

I smiled.

“That’s the first question you should answer.””

Vanessa stepped back.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“For years, I didn’t understand.””

I held up another paper.

“Until I found out you planned to destroy me.””

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn stood.

“Emma, stop this.””

I turned to her.

“You knew.””

Her face changed.

“You knew everything.””

Daniel’s mother looked away.

That was enough.

The truth was finally visible.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made the mistake.””

I pulled out the final piece of evidence.

The bank transfer.

The fake signature.

“This is where you went too far.””

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Then the restaurant doors opened.

Two people walked inside.

A lawyer.

And a police officer.

Everyone turned.

Daniel stared.

“Why are they here?””

I looked at him.

“Because I wasn’t the only one collecting evidence.””

The officer walked forward.

“Daniel Carter?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes?””

The officer held up a document.

“We need to speak with you regarding financial fraud allegations.””

The entire room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

But before he was taken away, he leaned close and whispered:

“You think you won.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His eyes moved toward Rachel.

Then he smiled.

“There’s something your sister never told you.””

My blood ran cold.

Rachel’s face turned white.

The officer pulled him away.

But his final words stayed in my mind.

Because Daniel had spent years hiding secrets.

May you like

And apparently…

Rachel had one more.
