Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew The Truth
For several seconds after Ethan hung up, nobody moved.
The room felt frozen.
Not quiet.
Frozen.
Like every person inside was waiting for someone else to say the thing nobody wanted to admit.
My father stared at the floor.
My mother looked like she had stopped breathing.
Daniel’s hand was still holding mine, but his attention was somewhere else.
On the words Ethan had left behind.
Ask Dad who really killed Grandpa.
I looked at my father.
“Did you?””
His eyes lifted slowly.
“What?””
“Did you kill him?””
My mother gasped.
“Claire.””
“No.””
I kept looking at my father.
“I need an answer.””
My father’s face changed.
Not anger.
Not shock.
Pain.
The kind that comes when someone finally asks the question you spent years avoiding.
“I didn’t kill your grandfather.””
The relief came for half a second.
Then disappeared.
Because there was something in his voice.
Something unfinished.
“You’re hiding something.””
He looked away.
“Claire.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“I am done hearing half-truths.””
The room went silent.
“I spent my entire life believing I knew my family.””
I looked at my mother.
“I didn’t.””
Then at my father.
“I didn’t.””
Then at the documents covering the table.
“I didn’t.””
I touched my stomach.
“And I almost lost my daughter because everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
My father closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, he looked older.
“I was there the night he died.””
Nobody spoke.
I waited.
“Your grandfather called me.””
“When?””
“The night before he was supposed to change his will.””
My heart tightened.
“Change it how?””
My father looked at the papers.
“He planned to reveal everything.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Everything about Victoria?””
“Yes.””
“About Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“And the company?””
My father nodded.
“He wanted to correct his mistakes.””
I swallowed.
“So someone stopped him.””
My father didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
“Who?””
A long silence followed.
Then:
“Your grandfather had enemies.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not what Ethan was implying.””
My father looked at him.
“You don’t know what Ethan knows.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Then tell us.””
My father looked toward the window.
The city lights reflected in his eyes.
“When I arrived at your grandfather’s house, he was alive.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
“He was angry.””
“About what?””
My father swallowed.
“About Ethan.””
Everyone went still.
“He had discovered that Ethan had been searching through old company records.””
Daniel immediately understood.
“He found Victoria’s documents.””
“Yes.””
My father nodded.
“And he found something else.””
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“He found proof that someone had been moving money from the trust.””
My stomach dropped.
“The trust?””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“Who?””
My father didn’t answer.
My mother whispered:
“Robert…”
He looked at her.
“It’s time.””
The words terrified me.
Because my mother looked like she already knew.
My father continued.
“Your grandfather didn’t trust anyone after what happened with Victoria.””
He paused.
“He created the trust in your name because he believed you were the only person who could eventually fix what he broke.””
I frowned.
“Fix what?””
“The company.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Claire was supposed to inherit the technology rights?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
“But Ethan thought it belonged to him.””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
Everything connected.
Ethan wasn’t only angry about money.
He believed he had been erased.
But why had everyone allowed that belief to grow?
“What happened that night?””
My father’s face tightened.
“I argued with him.””
“About?””
“About the trust.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted access.””
The room went silent.
“You wanted my inheritance.””
He looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“Why?””
“Because Ethan was in trouble.””
Of course.
Again.
Ethan.
“I thought I could fix it.””
My father’s voice broke.
“I thought if I helped him one more time, he would finally stop chasing things that weren’t his.””
I stared at him.
“And Grandpa refused.””
“Yes.””
“What happened next?””
My father looked down.
“I left.””
“Before he died?””
“Yes.””
“Then who was there?””
My father’s face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
A frustrated sound escaped me.
“You don’t know?””
“I left him alive.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Then why does Ethan think you know?””
My father didn’t answer.
And suddenly I understood.
“Because someone told him.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Someone wanted Ethan to believe Dad was responsible.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
I looked at Rachel.
The woman who had been silent through everything.
“Who benefits from that?””
Her expression changed.
“I think I know.””
Everyone turned.
Rachel looked at Victoria.
“My sister.””
Victoria frowned.
“What?””
Rachel stepped forward.
“You never told Claire everything either.””
Victoria looked hurt.
“I lost everything.””
“Yes.””
Rachel’s voice was gentle but firm.
“But you also wanted revenge.””
Victoria froze.
My heart sank.
Another secret.
Another person with a reason.
“Victoria?””
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I wanted justice.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She looked away.
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“She contacted Ethan before.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“I did.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted my company back.””
I stared.
“So you used him?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I could control him.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Everyone thought that.””
She looked devastated.
“I didn’t know how far he would go.””
I looked at the woman who had brought me answers.
And realized she had also brought danger.
“Then who started this?””
Nobody answered.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A video.
My heart started racing.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my penthouse.
The night before.
The camera angle was from inside my apartment.
I watched myself arranging flowers.
Then Ethan entering.
Then my parents.
Then the argument.
But the video was different.
Because it showed something I hadn’t seen.
Before Ethan grabbed my wrist…
Before I fell…
My father stepped toward him.
And whispered something.
I froze.
The video had no sound.
But I watched my father’s expression.
I watched Ethan’s reaction.
Then I watched my father walk away.
I looked at him.
“What did you say to him?””
My father looked at the screen.
His face drained of color.
“I…”
The video continued.
After I fell.
After my water broke.
After my parents left.
The camera stayed on the empty apartment.
For almost two minutes.
Then someone entered.
Someone who had not been there before.
A person wearing gloves.
The figure walked to the coffee table.
Picked up the folder.
And placed something inside.
Then they turned toward the camera.
Their face was partially visible.
But enough.
Enough for everyone in the room to recognize them.
My mother covered her mouth.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
I stared at the screen.
Because the person inside my apartment after everyone left…
The person planting evidence…
Was someone I never expected.
Someone who had spent the last day pretending to help me.
The video stopped.
A new message appeared.
*Now you know who really betrayed you.*
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was staring at the same person.
Victoria.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
“I can explain.””
My heart felt numb.
“Can you?””
She cried.
“Yes.””
“Then explain why you came to my hospital room with evidence against Ethan.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel moved between us.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Because I knew what was coming.
Another truth.
Another betrayal.
My father stood suddenly.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at the screen.
“That video proves something else.””
“What?””
His eyes were fixed on the timestamp.
“The person who sent this…”
He swallowed.
“…wasn’t Ethan.””
My blood ran cold.
“Then who?””
My father looked at the phone.
The message.
The unknown number.
And whispered:
“The person who recorded it was already inside your apartment before any of us arrived.””
A notification appeared.
A new message.
One sentence.
One name.
*Claire, you need to know the truth about your baby’s father.*
My hands went cold.
Because beneath the message was a photo.
A photo of Daniel.
Standing beside Ethan.
Taken yesterday morning.
Before he came to save me.
May you like
And written underneath was:
*He was never your rescuer. He was part of the plan.*
