Chapter 6: The Evidence Against Me
The hospital room felt smaller after the detective’s call.
The walls seemed closer.
The machines beside my bed sounded louder.
Every beep reminded me that my life had become something I no longer recognized.
My brother had tried to take my home.
My parents had hidden my family’s biggest secret.
And now Ethan was building a story where I was the person who had done something wrong.
I lowered the phone slowly.
Daniel was watching me.
“What did he say?””
I looked at him.
“He says Ethan reported the accident.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What accident?””
“The fall.””
A pause.
Then:
“He says I attacked him.””
My mother gasped.
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“No?””
She looked horrified.
“Ethan would never…”
I stared at her.
The words died before she finished them.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly what he was capable of.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Claire, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“Not another secret.””
His face softened.
“I’m not going to hide anything.””
“Everyone says that right before they do.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But he didn’t argue.
“You’re right.””
That answer surprised me.
Again.
“I should have told you everything years ago.””
I looked down at my hands.
“And now?””
“Now I tell you everything.””
Before I could respond, the door opened.
A woman in a dark suit walked in.
She held a folder.
Behind her was a police officer.
“Ms. Carter?””
I nodded.
The woman introduced herself.
“I’m Attorney Sarah Mitchell. Daniel contacted me.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You called a lawyer?””
“Yes.””
“Without asking me?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because Ethan already started a legal attack.””
I wanted to be angry.
But I knew he was right.
Sarah placed the folder on the table.
“I reviewed the documents Daniel provided.””
“And?””
Her expression was serious.
“Your brother has filed a preliminary claim stating that the penthouse was purchased using family funds.””
I stared.
“What?””
Sarah opened the folder.
“He is claiming your parents financially supported the purchase and therefore have an ownership interest.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“My parents gave me nothing.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I reviewed your financial records.””
She turned a page.
“The property was purchased entirely through your company earnings.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Then why would he claim that?””
Sarah looked uncomfortable.
“Because he needs a legal argument.””
“To steal my home.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was refreshing.
Terrifying.
But refreshing.
My mother whispered:
“This has gone too far.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“It went too far when you all walked into my apartment with papers already prepared.””
Her face fell.
I looked away.
Because part of me still wanted her to deny it.
Still wanted her to say Ethan acted alone.
Still wanted one person in my family to choose me.
But nobody did.
Sarah continued.
“There’s another issue.””
I looked back.
“What?””
“The police report.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
She opened another document.
“Ethan claims he arrived at the apartment because you invited him.””
I frowned.
“That’s false.””
“Do you have proof?””
I thought.
“The building cameras.””
Daniel immediately nodded.
“Exactly.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Do you have access?””
“I know the building manager.””
“Good.””
She made a note.
“But there’s a bigger problem.””
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“Your brother’s version of events includes details that only someone inside the apartment would know.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What details?””
She hesitated.
“The position of your body after the fall.””
I froze.
Nobody had been there.
Except them.
My family.
My brother.
My parents.
“He described exactly how you landed.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“He was there.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
“But he’s changing the story.””
“Correct.””
The room became silent.
My mother covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
I looked at her.
“You finally understand?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I never thought he would do this.””
I looked away.
“You never thought he would hurt me.””
The sentence was different.
Because it was true.
She never imagined he would hurt me.
She only imagined he would take from me.
And somehow, that was supposed to be better.
The door opened again.
A nurse entered.
“Ms. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“Your doctor wants to speak with you.””
I nodded.
A few minutes later, the doctor entered.
She smiled gently.
“The baby is stable.””
I closed my eyes.
Relief hit me so hard I almost cried.
“Thank you.””
“But…”
My eyes opened.
“But?””
She sat down.
“We’re monitoring you closely. Stress levels are high, and we want to avoid early labor if possible.””
I placed my hand on my stomach.
My daughter moved.
A tiny reminder.
A reason to fight.
“Okay.””
The doctor looked at everyone.
“Only people who reduce stress should remain.””
Her eyes briefly moved toward my family.
The message was clear.
My mother looked away.
Daniel stood.
“I’ll leave.””
I looked at him.
For some reason, that bothered me.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
“You can stay.””
His expression softened.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
I almost smiled.
“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””
A small smile appeared.
“But you’re the only person who came.””
He nodded.
And sat back down.
Three hours later, the police arrived with the evidence.
Not officially.
Not as an arrest.
Yet.
But enough to make my chest tighten.
Detective Morgan entered with another officer.
“Ms. Carter.””
I nodded.
“Did Ethan send you?””
The detective didn’t answer immediately.
That told me everything.
“He filed a complaint.””
“Against me.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the floor.
“Of course.””
Detective Morgan opened a notebook.
“We need your statement.””
“I’ll give it.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
She nodded.
The detective began.
“Describe what happened.””
I told the truth.
Every second.
Every word.
Ethan entering.
The papers.
The argument.
The grab.
The fall.
My parents leaving.
The knock.
Daniel arriving.
When I finished, the room was quiet.
Detective Morgan looked at me.
“Your brother says something different.””
“I know.””
“He says you became aggressive when he refused to leave.””
I almost laughed.
“He refused to leave?””
The detective didn’t respond.
“He says you pushed him.””
I stared.
“Does he have injuries?””
The detective looked down.
“He has bruising on his arm.””
My heart sank.
The exact place where he grabbed me.
“He caused that.””
Detective Morgan wrote something.
“Do you have witnesses?””
I looked toward my mother.
She froze.
The question hung there.
My mother could save me.
One sentence.
One truth.
I waited.
“Linda?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I…”
My heart dropped.
Even now.
Even here.
She hesitated.
The detective looked between us.
“You were present?””
My mother whispered:
“Yes.””
“And what did you see?””
She looked at me.
Then at the floor.
“I saw them arguing.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
A pause.
Then:
“I saw Claire fall.””
I breathed again.
A tiny piece of hope.
“And before she fell?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
The hope disappeared.
Because she still couldn’t say it.
She still couldn’t say her son did it.
Detective Morgan nodded slowly.
“Thank you.””
After they left, I stared out the window.
The city was bright.
Unbothered.
Thousands of people living normal lives.
Meanwhile, my entire family was collapsing.
Daniel came beside me.
“Claire.””
I didn’t look at him.
“Did you ever think my family would do this?””
He was quiet.
Then:
“No.””
I turned.
“You’re lying.””
He looked at me.
“I thought Ethan was dangerous.””
My breath caught.
“How long?””
“Years.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
Anger rose again.
“You thought you could handle my life?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I thought I could protect yours.””
I looked away.
“That’s not the same thing.””
“I know.””
Silence.
Then Daniel picked up his phone.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He stared at the screen.
“What happened?””
He handed me the phone.
It was an email.
From an unknown sender.
The subject line:
*THE REAL REASON ETHAN CHOSE YOUR WEDDING WEEK*
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Ethan.
Standing outside a lawyer’s office.
Beside someone else.
Someone I recognized.
My father.
But the date was what made my blood run cold.
The photo had been taken three months before my brother’s wedding.
Before he came to my penthouse.
Before he demanded my home.
Before he pushed me.
They had planned everything.
I scrolled down.
There was one sentence underneath the photo.
A sentence that made my heart stop.
*Your brother didn’t come for the penthouse. He came because he knows where your missing inheritance is hidden.*
I looked at Daniel.
“My inheritance?””
His face went pale.
“Claire…”
“What?””
He stared at the message.
Then whispered:
“Your parents never told you about the trust.””
I felt the room tilt.
“What trust?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The one created in your name before you were born.””
A knock came from the door.
All of us turned.
A hospital administrator stood outside.
“Ms. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There is someone here requesting to see you.””
“Who?””
The administrator looked at the clipboard.
Then back at me.
“A man named Robert Carter.””
My father.
I felt my fingers tighten around the phone.
“What does he want?””
May you like
The administrator hesitated.
“He says he has proof that you were never supposed to inherit anything at all.””
