Chapter 4: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
The sentence stayed in the air long after the security officer stopped speaking.
Your baby’s father knows exactly why he disappeared five years ago.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t look surprised.
That hurt more than anything.
Because surprise would have meant he was hearing this for the first time.
But he wasn’t.
He looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
The officer shifted awkwardly near the door.
“I can ask him to leave.””
I barely heard him.
My entire focus was on the man sitting beside my hospital bed.
The man who had returned when I was at my lowest.
The man who knew secrets about my family that I didn’t even know existed.
The man who had disappeared when I needed him most.
“You knew Ethan was coming,” I said.
Daniel shook his head.
“I knew he would eventually come after me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows what happened.””
“What happened?””
He looked down.
And for the first time since he arrived, Daniel looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Claire, right now you need to focus on staying calm.””
I almost laughed.
“Staying calm?””
I pointed toward the door.
“My brother tried to take my home.””
My hand moved toward my stomach.
“My parents left me on the floor.””
I looked back at him.
“And now you’re telling me there’s a secret about my life that everyone knew except me?””
My voice dropped.
“No, Daniel. I think I deserve the truth.””
The room went silent.
My mother stood near the wall, crying quietly.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
Good.
For once, I wanted her to feel uncomfortable.
Daniel slowly nodded.
“You’re right.””
He reached for the folder.
“Five years ago, after you sold your company, there were investors who wanted access to the technology you developed.””
I listened carefully.
“At first, everything looked normal. The acquisition went through. The contracts were clean.””
He paused.
“Too clean.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone had prepared everything before the company was even ready to sell.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I didn’t know at first.””
A nurse passed outside the room.
The hospital continued moving around us.
People laughing.
Phones ringing.
Footsteps echoing.
And inside my room, my entire life was being rewritten.
“I started looking into it because I noticed unusual activity after the sale.””
“What kind of activity?””
“Money transfers. Private agreements. People connected to the deal.””
He looked at my mother.
“And then I found out someone in your family had been asking questions.””
Mom lowered her head.
“Ethan.””
I said his name quietly.
Daniel nodded.
“He wanted information.””
“From you?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“Why would he come to you?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because the answer was obvious.
“You introduced us.””
The memory came back instantly.
A family dinner.
Six years ago.
Before everything.
Ethan had sat across from Daniel all night asking questions.
About business.
About investments.
About technology.
I remembered thinking my brother was finally taking an interest in my work.
I had been proud of him.
I had been wrong.
“He acted like he admired you,” Daniel said.
I swallowed.
“He did.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“He studied you.””
The words made me uncomfortable.
Because suddenly every conversation with Ethan felt different.
Every question.
Every compliment.
Every time he asked about my company.
“You knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“I suspected.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His face tightened.
“Because when I tried…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“When you tried what?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“When I tried to warn you, Ethan got there first.””
A chill moved through me.
“What did he do?””
“He showed you messages.””
I froze.
Messages.
The breakup.
The last argument.
The reason I believed Daniel abandoned me.
Five years ago, I had received screenshots.
Messages showing Daniel talking to another investor.
Talking about my company.
Talking about my future.
Making decisions without me.
I had been devastated.
I had confronted him.
He denied it.
I didn’t believe him.
“You said those messages were fake,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“They were.””
My throat tightened.
“I thought you were lying.””
“I know.””
“You let me hate you.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I thought it was safer.””
The anger came back.
“Safer for who?””
“For you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, Daniel.””
I looked away.
“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””
He accepted that.
“I know.””
I hated that answer.
Because he always knew how to make me angry without giving me anyone to fight.
The door opened.
My brother walked in.
Ethan.
He looked nothing like the man who had stood in my penthouse yesterday.
The confidence was still there.
But underneath it was something else.
Desperation.
His eyes immediately went to Daniel.
“So you finally told her.””
Daniel stood.
“Get out.””
Ethan smiled.
“That’s still your favorite move.””
I stared at him.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked at me.
“I came to save you from making a mistake.””
A laugh escaped my mouth.
“Save me?””
He glanced around the hospital room.
“Look where you ended up.””
My hands tightened.
“You pushed me.””
His expression flickered.
Only for a second.
Then he recovered.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
I stared.
“That’s your defense?””
He stepped closer.
“I never wanted you hurt.””
“You wanted my apartment.””
“I wanted what was fair.””
“Fair?””
His voice sharpened.
“Yes.””
He pointed toward Daniel.
“You think he’s protecting you?””
Daniel moved forward.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“You deserve to know who he really is.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Don’t.””
Ethan smiled slightly.
There it was.
The old Ethan.
The one who enjoyed having information others didn’t.
“You never asked why Daniel disappeared.””
“I know why.””
“No, you don’t.””
He placed a folder on the table.
Another folder.
Everyone in my life suddenly carried folders.
He opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Emails.
My stomach turned.
“What is that?””
Ethan looked pleased.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That Daniel was involved in the company sale.””
Daniel’s face went cold.
“Leave.””
Ethan ignored him.
“He wasn’t just your boyfriend, Claire.””
I looked at Daniel.
Ethan continued.
“He was investigating the company because he knew something was wrong.””
I frowned.
“That’s not a crime.””
“No.””
Ethan smiled.
“But hiding it is.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Ethan laughed.
“Actually, I understand perfectly.””
He looked at me.
“You think I’m the villain because I asked for the apartment.””
My voice was quiet.
“You assaulted me.””
His jaw tightened.
“And you think he’s innocent?””
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at Ethan.
“What do you want?””
The question changed everything.
Ethan’s expression softened.
Almost.
“I want you to listen.””
“Why?””
“Because if you don’t…”
He looked at Daniel.
“Your friend goes to prison.””
Daniel’s face didn’t change.
But I saw it.
Fear.
A tiny crack.
Enough.
“What did you do?””
I asked Ethan.
He smiled.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He leaned closer.
“I found the person who can explain everything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
“Someone you thought was dead.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Daniel’s expression changed instantly.
“No.””
Ethan smiled.
“Yes.””
The door behind him opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Pale.
Holding a stack of papers.
I didn’t recognize her at first.
Then she spoke.
“Claire…”
My entire body went still.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it once.
On a voicemail.
A voicemail I thought was a mistake.
The woman stepped into the room.
And Daniel whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“Her name is Victoria.””
He looked at me.
“She was the original owner of the technology you built your company on.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Victoria looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
My heart pounded.
“Sorry for what?””
She opened the folder in her hands.
Then placed one document on my bed.
A birth certificate.
Not mine.
Not my baby’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone connected to me.
Someone whose name made Daniel go completely silent.
Victoria pointed to the bottom of the page.
And said:
May you like
“Because Ethan isn’t your brother by blood.””
My world stopped.
