Chapter 5: The Family Secret Buried For Thirty Years

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Ethan.

Not my mother.

Not even me.

The words were too impossible to understand.

Ethan isn’t your brother by blood.

My brain rejected them before my heart could even process them.

I looked at the document sitting on my hospital bed.

A birth certificate.

A stranger’s name.

A stranger’s information.

And somehow, everyone in the room looked like they had known this moment was coming except me.

I slowly turned toward my mother.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

Linda’s face collapsed.

That was my answer.

“Mom.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she sat down.

Like her legs could no longer hold her.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Say my name like you’re about to apologize.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I am sorry.””

I stared at her.

Five years ago, I would have fallen apart hearing those words.

Yesterday, I would have forgiven anything just to have my mother come back to me.

But after watching her leave me on that floor…

Sorry felt too small.

“Thirty years,” I said quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

“How long have you known?””

My mother looked down.

“Since Ethan was born.””

The room became silent again.

I felt something inside me crack.

“You knew my whole life?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

She cried.

“I wanted to protect you.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“Protect me from what?””

Victoria stepped forward.

“From the truth.””

I looked at her.

The woman who had walked into my life carrying a secret that destroyed everything I believed.

“Who are you?””

She swallowed.

“My name is Victoria Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

But Daniel reacted.

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re the founder.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“What founder?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“The original creator of the technology behind Claire’s company.””

My mind spun.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Victoria looked at me.

“It will.””

She moved closer.

“When I was young, I created the first version of the software you later developed.””

I frowned.

“Later developed?””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“I lost control of my company after a legal battle. The technology was taken from me.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“And someone helped make that happen.””

Ethan rolled his eyes.

“This is getting dramatic.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

His jaw tightened.

“What does it matter?””

My chest hurt.

“What does it matter?””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You spent years pretending to be my brother while knowing all of this?””

He looked away.

That tiny movement hurt more than anger.

Because it meant he didn’t deny it.

My mother started crying harder.

“Ethan didn’t know at first.””

I looked at her.

“You’re defending him?””

“No.””

“You always do.””

She shook her head.

“No, Claire.””

Her voice broke.

“I’m explaining.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“When Ethan was born, your father and I were told he had a different biological mother.””

I froze.

“What?””

She wiped her face.

“We were young. We made mistakes.””

The room felt colder.

“Who was his mother?””

Victoria looked down.

“I was.””

The answer landed like a physical blow.

I stared at her.

“You’re his mother?””

She nodded.

“No.””

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

For the first time since he entered the room, he didn’t look confident.

He looked scared.

“Don’t tell her everything.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He said nothing.

“Why, Ethan?””

His eyes met mine.

And for a moment, I saw the little boy I remembered.

The child who used to hold my hand.

The child who cried when I left for college.

Then that disappeared.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

I almost whispered:

“Try me.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Ethan was taken from me.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“I lost him because of a legal fight.””

She looked at Daniel.

“The same people who took my company took my son.””

Nobody moved.

The room felt unreal.

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew?””

His face hardened again.

“I knew enough.””

“Enough to what?””

“To know I was never supposed to be here.””

The anger in his voice surprised me.

Not because it justified anything.

Because underneath it was pain.

A pain he had turned into cruelty.

“I spent my whole life being the person nobody wanted.””

I stared.

“That’s not true.””

He laughed.

“Isn’t it?””

He pointed at me.

“Look at you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You had everything.””

My jaw tightened.

“No, Ethan.””

“Yes.””

His voice rose.

“You had the talent. The money. The future.””

“That doesn’t mean you were entitled to take it.””

“I didn’t take anything!””

“You pushed me.””

Silence.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Guilt.

“You scared me,” I whispered.

He looked away.

And for the first time, he looked ashamed.

Only for a second.

Then it was gone.

“I came here because I wanted you to know the truth.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You came here because you wanted control.””

His face tightened.

“You think Daniel is different?””

I glanced at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan smiled.

A bitter smile.

“Ask him why he never told you about Victoria.””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t answer.

My stomach dropped.

“Daniel.””

He looked exhausted.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

That sentence again.

Everyone kept using it.

Protect you.

Protect you.

Protect you.

But nobody ever asked what I wanted.

“From what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“From a lawsuit.””

I opened my eyes.

“What lawsuit?””

Victoria answered.

“Your company’s sale was supposed to include my technology.””

I frowned.

“But I created my own.””

She nodded.

“You did.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone manipulated the legal chain.””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Claire, when you sold the company, you unknowingly sold rights connected to Victoria’s original work.””

My heart sank.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s why I investigated.””

“And Ethan knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“He found out before I did.””

Ethan crossed his arms.

“And I realized something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His eyes became cold.

“That Claire was never as untouchable as she thought.””

The words hurt.

Because they were designed to.

“You wanted to punish me.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I wanted what was mine.””

“You wanted my home.””

“I wanted justice.””

I looked at the man I had spent my whole life protecting.

“Justice doesn’t come from destroying someone else.””

His face hardened.

“You wouldn’t say that if you knew what it felt like.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me what it felt like.””

For a moment, I thought he would.

I thought maybe the truth would finally come out.

Instead, Ethan stepped back.

“Ask Mom.””

My mother looked terrified.

I turned toward her.

“What else?””

She shook her head.

“Claire…”

“What else did you hide?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched his face.

“What happened?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he handed me the phone.

On the screen was a news alert.

A headline.

*LOCAL TECH COMPANY DISPUTE ESCALATES AS FAMILY CLAIMS OWNERSHIP FRAUD*

My blood ran cold.

“How did they get this?””

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

But Ethan was already walking toward the door.

“Wait.””

Ethan stopped.

I looked at him.

“Did you leak this?””

He didn’t turn around.

“You should have signed the papers.””

My heart sank.

“You did.””

He finally looked back.

“I gave you a chance.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You threatened me.””

He smiled sadly.

“No, Claire.””

A pause.

“I warned you.””

The door closed behind him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then my phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Daniel looked concerned.

“Don’t answer.””

But something inside me told me I needed to.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“Claire Carter?””

“Yes?””

“This is Detective Morgan.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why is the police calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“We need you to come in and answer questions regarding the accident at your penthouse.””

My heart stopped.

“What accident?””

The detective’s voice became quieter.

“The one your brother says you caused.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What?””

“He claims you attacked him first.””

I looked at Daniel.

At my mother.

At the documents covering my bed.

My brother had tried to steal my home.

My family had hidden my entire life from me.

And now…

He was trying to make me the criminal.

The detective continued:

“Ms. Carter, there’s one more thing.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“We found evidence that someone accessed your medical records before you arrived at the hospital.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

The detective paused.

Then said:

“The person who accessed them used your brother’s account.””

My eyes locked on the closed door.

May you like

Ethan wasn’t finished.

Not even close.
