Chapter 8: The Brother My Grandfather Hid

For years, I thought Ethan and I were opposites.

I was the responsible one.

The planner.

The person who stayed up late working toward something.

Ethan was the dreamer.

The person who believed opportunities appeared when someone else created them.

I thought our differences came from personality.

From choices.

From the way we were raised.

I never imagined the truth was buried deeper.

Blood.

Secrets.

A family history nobody wanted me to see.

I stared at the DNA report in my hands.

The words blurred.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I did.

And understanding was worse.

“Dad.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

“Say it again.””

My father looked at me.

His face carried the weight of thirty years of silence.

“Ethan is your grandfather’s biological son.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Claire…”

“No.””

I pushed the paper away.

“No, because if that’s true, then why?””

Why had everyone lied?

Why had they raised us together?

Why had they allowed me to believe Ethan was my brother?

Why had they let him hate me for something neither of us chose?

My father looked down.

“Your grandfather made mistakes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in this family seems to.””

Daniel picked up the report.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the page.

“The DNA test wasn’t done recently.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

Daniel looked at my father.

“Robert?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Ten years ago.””

I froze.

“Ten years?””

“Yes.””

“You knew?””

He nodded.

My hands began shaking.

“You knew Ethan wasn’t your son?””

“Yes.””

“And you still raised him?””

My father’s expression broke.

“I loved him.””

The answer surprised me.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was the first honest thing he had said.

I looked at Ethan’s childhood memories in my mind.

The boy who followed me everywhere.

The boy who cried when I left for college.

The boy who once told me I was the only person who believed in him.

A part of me still remembered that boy.

That was the worst part.

Because the man who hurt me had once been someone I loved.

“So why?””

My father looked at me.

“Why did you hide it?””

He hesitated.

Then my mother spoke.

“Because your grandfather asked us to.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She had been silent for too long.

And now her voice sounded exhausted.

“Before he died, he made us promise.””

“To lie?””

She flinched.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

She continued.

“He believed the truth would destroy Ethan.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

My mother swallowed.

“Because Ethan’s mother was Victoria.””

I looked toward the woman standing near the corner.

The woman who had brought me the truth.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“And because your grandfather knew what he had done.””

I looked at her.

“What did he do?””

Victoria took a slow breath.

“He stole my company.””

The room became quiet.

“I was young,” she said.

“I trusted him.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Your grandfather was her business partner.””

Victoria nodded.

“We created the first version of the technology together.””

I listened.

“The company grew quickly. Then he wanted control.””

She looked at me.

“He changed the ownership documents.””

My chest tightened.

“The same way Ethan tried with me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

A terrible realization formed.

“This isn’t about the penthouse.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“It never was.””

I looked at the documents.

“The technology.””

“Yes.””

My grandfather.

Victoria.

My company.

Ethan.

Everything was connected.

But one question remained.

“Why did Ethan come after me?””

My father answered quietly.

“Because he believed you stole what belonged to him.””

I stared.

“I stole?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“But Ethan doesn’t see it that way.””

I looked toward the door.

“He thinks I had everything.””

My father nodded.

“He grew up believing you inherited the life he should have had.””

A painful silence followed.

Because suddenly Ethan’s anger made sense.

Not justified.

Never justified.

But understandable.

He had spent his whole life carrying a wound nobody helped him heal.

And instead of facing the people who caused it…

He chose me.

The easiest target.

The person who loved him enough not to fight back.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Daniel’s expression immediately changed.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

*You finally know the truth. Good. Now ask Dad what happened the night Grandpa died.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at my father.

“What happened?””

He didn’t speak.

“Dad.””

His face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Fear.

“Robert,” Daniel said quietly.

My father looked away.

“What happened?””

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, he whispered:

“Your grandfather didn’t die naturally.””

Nobody moved.

The words were impossible.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“He was murdered.””

My breath caught.

The machines beside my bed seemed to get louder.

“Who?””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“But someone does.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel stared at the message.

“Ethan.””

My heart sank.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He wouldn’t.””

The words came automatically.

Because some part of me was still protecting Ethan.

Even now.

Even after everything.

Daniel softened.

“I know you want to believe there’s still something good left.””

I looked away.

“But?””

He didn’t say it.

He didn’t have to.

The door opened.

A nurse walked in.

“Ms. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here who says they need to speak with you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The nurse looked down.

“A woman.””

“What woman?””

The nurse hesitated.

“She says her name is Rachel Hale.””

Victoria went completely still.

The color disappeared from her face.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Victoria whispered:

“She’s alive?””

I looked at her.

“Who is Rachel Hale?””

Victoria looked terrified.

“My sister.””

The room went silent.

Daniel frowned.

“Rachel died years ago.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“She disappeared.””

The nurse looked confused.

“She’s waiting outside.””

My father stood suddenly.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know her too?””

His silence answered.

I felt something inside me break again.

Another secret.

Another person everyone knew except me.

“Bring her in.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I looked at the door.

“I’m done letting people decide what I can handle.””

A moment later, the door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She looked older than Victoria.

Tired.

Broken.

But her eyes were sharp.

Her gaze immediately went to my father.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

Finally, she whispered:

“So this is Claire.””

Nobody spoke.

The woman walked closer.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

She looked at the DNA report.

Then at me.

“For not finding you before he did.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

And the answer came before she even said the name.

“Ethan.””

I froze.

Rachel placed a small envelope on the table.

“I have proof of what he’s planning.””

Daniel picked it up.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Your brother isn’t trying to take your apartment.””

I swallowed.

“Then what is he trying to take?””

Her face turned pale.

“Everything your grandfather left behind.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“Because Ethan believes your grandfather stole his life.””

A pause.

Then:

“And he believes the only way to get revenge is to destroy the last person carrying that legacy.””

My heart pounded.

“Me?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at the envelope.

“Inside are the records proving Ethan has been preparing this for years.””

Daniel opened it.

His expression changed as he read.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He slowly turned the pages toward me.

The first page was a list of names.

The second was a timeline.

The third was a plan.

At the bottom was Ethan’s signature.

And beside it was a sentence written by hand.

*Phase One: Take the apartment.*

My breath caught.

I turned the page.

*Phase Two: Remove Claire from control.*

Then the final line.

The one that made my blood run cold.

*Phase Three: Claim the company after her death.*

I couldn’t breathe.

Daniel immediately grabbed my hand.

“Claire.””

I stared at the page.

My brother didn’t just want my home.

He didn’t just want revenge.

He had planned my disappearance.

And then my phone rang.

This time, the number wasn’t unknown.

It was Ethan.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then his voice came through.

Quiet.

Almost calm.

“Now you know why I had to do it.””

I froze.

“Ethan.””

A pause.

Then:

“I never wanted your apartment, Claire.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Then what did you want?””

His voice dropped.

“What was stolen from me.””

The call went silent.

Then he said one final thing.

Something that made Daniel turn pale.

May you like

“Ask Dad who really killed Grandpa.””

The line disconnected.
