Chapter 7: The Secret Between Forty Minutes
I held the phone against my ear, but I couldn’t speak.
Daniel’s breathing was uneven.
He knew.
He knew exactly what Megan had told me.
That alone was an answer.
“Where did you go?”” I asked.
The silence on the other end was painful.
“Maya…”
“Where did you go?””
He exhaled slowly.
“Outside.””
I closed my eyes.
“Outside where?””
“The hospital.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
Every second felt like another piece of trust breaking.
“Because I needed to make a call.””
I laughed quietly.
A cold, empty sound.
“A forty-minute call?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I know how it looks.””
“It looks like you lied to me.””
“I didn’t want to upset you.””
“You mean you didn’t want me to know.””
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then explain it.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel said the words I had been waiting for.
“I called Megan.””
My stomach dropped.
The room around me felt suddenly too small.
“You called her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was scared.””
I sat down slowly.
“Scared of what?””
“You were unconscious. The doctors were running tests. I didn’t know what was happening.””
I gripped my phone tighter.
“And you called her?””
“She was the only person besides your sister who knew where everything was.””
I stared at the wall.
It made sense.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because betrayal rarely came from something completely impossible.
It came wrapped in reasonable excuses.
“She came to the hospital because you called her.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His voice became softer.
“Because after that night, things got complicated.””
I closed my eyes.
“Complicated how?””
“She started acting differently.””
“Different?””
“She thought because she was there for me, because she helped me, that we shared something.””
I remembered Megan sitting on his lap.
The smile.
The confidence.
The way she looked at me like she already knew something I didn’t.
“What did you do?””
“I told her she misunderstood.””
“Once?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“How many times?””
“Three.””
My chest tightened.
“Three times she crossed a line, and you never told me?””
“I thought I could handle it.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But underneath the anger was something heavier.
Disappointment.
Because I had built my marriage around the belief that Daniel and I were a team.
But while I was fighting my own doubts alone, he had been managing a secret.
“Maya, I need you to understand something.””
I almost ended the call.
But I waited.
“I never wanted Megan.””
I looked down.
“Maybe not.””
The words surprised him.
“But you liked being wanted.””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
That honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“I should have shut it down immediately.””
“Yes.””
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
He whispered:
“I know.””
I hung up.
Not because I hated him.
Because I didn’t know how to forgive someone while I was still trying to understand how badly I had been hurt.
The next morning, I met Claire at a small café near my sister’s apartment.
She looked nervous.
“You’re okay?””
I smiled sadly.
“I don’t know.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
I stirred my coffee without drinking it.
“Why did you tell me?””
Claire looked down.
“Because I heard something else.””
My hand stopped.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“The night before the dinner.””
“What about it?””
“I saw Megan talking to Daniel outside.””
My heart sank.
“When?””
“Before everyone arrived.””
“What did she say?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“I couldn’t hear everything.””
“But?””
“She said, ‘Tonight is the last chance.’”
A chill ran through me.
“The last chance for what?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked out the window.
The city moved around me.
People walking.
Cars passing.
Everyone living normal lives.
And mine felt like it had cracked open.
“What else?””
Claire reached into her bag.
“I saved this.””
She placed her phone on the table.
A recording.
My eyes widened.
“Claire…”
“I didn’t know if I should give it to you.””
“Play it.””
She pressed the button.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then Megan’s voice.
Quiet.
Angry.
“You keep saying you’re going to tell her.””
Daniel’s voice.
“I will.””
“When?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t get forever, Daniel.””
My breath caught.
Claire watched me carefully.
Megan continued.
“You know she’s going to leave when she finds out.””
Daniel said something too quiet to hear.
Then Megan laughed.
“She already thinks I’m the problem. She’ll never believe you.””
The recording ended.
I sat there frozen.
Because one thing was clear.
Megan wasn’t just trying to take Daniel.
She was trying to control the entire story.
But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.
Why did she think Daniel would leave me?
Why was she so sure?
That afternoon, I went home.
Not to stay.
To find answers.
The house felt unfamiliar.
Like I was walking through someone else’s memories.
I opened drawers.
Checked old papers.
Looked through things I had ignored.
Then I found something.
Hidden behind a stack of old documents in Daniel’s desk.
An envelope.
My name wasn’t on it.
Neither was his.
It was addressed to Megan.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a printed email.
From Megan.
The first line made my blood turn cold.
*I know you’re scared to admit what happened, but I’m giving you one final chance to choose me.*
I read the next sentence.
And suddenly, I understood why Megan was so confident.
Because she wasn’t guessing.
She knew something I didn’t.
Something Daniel had never told me.
May you like
The email continued:
*If Maya learns the truth about the night at the hospital, she’ll never look at you the same way again.*
