Chapter 4: The Night I Wasn’t There
Daniel didn’t answer right away.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not his expression.
Not the way he looked down at the floor.
The silence.
A person who had nothing to hide would have answered immediately.
A person who was innocent would have been angry.
Confused.
Defensive.
But Daniel just stood there, frozen, like he was trying to decide which version of the truth would hurt me less.
And somehow, that hurt the most.
“What happened?”” I asked again.
My voice was quieter this time.
Almost a whisper.
Daniel looked toward the empty chair where Megan had been sitting.
“She’s trying to destroy us.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not an answer.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The restaurant had started to empty around us. People were leaving in small groups, pretending they weren’t watching us. Pretending they hadn’t just witnessed a friendship explode in front of them.
Claire stood nearby, waiting.
Ryan was sitting alone at the table, looking like he had aged ten years in one night.
I didn’t want an audience.
But I also didn’t want another lie.
“Tell me about the night I was away,” I said.
Daniel swallowed.
“It was the weekend you went to your sister’s.””
I remembered it immediately.
Three months earlier.
My sister had just moved into a new apartment, and I spent two nights helping her unpack.
Daniel stayed home because of work.
At the time, I felt guilty leaving him alone.
I had hugged him goodbye at the door and told him I hated being away.
He had smiled and kissed my forehead.
“Go help your sister,” he told me.
“I’ll survive two days without you.””
I trusted him.
I trusted Megan too.
Because Megan had always been part of our lives.
She came over for dinner.
She knew our routines.
She knew our anniversary date.
She knew where we kept the spare key.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened that weekend?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“Megan came over.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“She said she was dropping something off.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“A cookbook.””
I almost laughed.
A cookbook.
After everything.
A cookbook.
“And?””
“She stayed.””
“How long?””
Daniel looked away.
“An hour.””
I waited.
He knew I wasn’t going to accept half-truths anymore.
“Daniel.””
He exhaled.
“Three hours.””
The room seemed colder.
“Three hours?””
“She was upset.””
“About what?””
“She said Ryan and her were fighting.””
I looked toward Ryan.
His eyes lifted.
He heard his name.
“She came to our house because she was fighting with her husband?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought she needed a friend.””
“A friend.””
I repeated the words.
A strange feeling moved through me.
Not jealousy.
Something worse.
Betrayal.
Because Megan had never just been a random woman.
She was the person I trusted inside my home.
Inside my marriage.
“What happened during those three hours?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She talked.””
“That’s it?””
“She cried.””
I waited.
“She hugged me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of hug?””
“Maya…”
“What kind?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“The kind that lasted too long.””
I looked away.
I felt sick.
Not because of the hug.
Because he was finally telling me pieces.
Pieces I had to drag out.
“What else?””
“She told me you didn’t understand how lucky you were.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“She said you took me for granted.””
I almost smiled.
It was unbelievable.
Megan had spent twelve years pretending to protect me.
And behind my back, she was slowly rewriting my marriage.
“What did you say?””
“I told her that wasn’t true.””
“Then?””
“She got angry.””
“Angry?””
Daniel nodded.
“She said I was defending you because I was afraid to admit the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“And what truth was that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She said she thought we had a connection.””
The words hung between us.
A connection.
I remembered every time Megan had joked that she and Daniel had the same taste in movies.
Every time she had said, “Daniel gets me.””
Every time she had touched his arm and laughed.
I had ignored it.
Because I trusted her.
Because I didn’t want to be that wife.
The suspicious wife.
The insecure wife.
“What did you do?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I told her she was wrong.””
“Clearly that didn’t stop her.””
“No.””
“What happened next?””
He looked down.
“She said something else.””
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he pulled out his phone.
My stomach dropped.
“What are you doing?””
“I saved the message.””
“What message?””
“The one she sent me after that night.””
He opened his phone.
His fingers shook.
“She apologized.””
I stared at him.
“Apologized for what?””
He turned the screen toward me.
The message was from Megan.
*I’m sorry if I made things confusing tonight. I just think you know there’s something between us. Don’t worry. I won’t tell Maya unless you want me to.*
My breath caught.
The world went quiet.
Unless you want me to.
That sentence.
That one sentence explained everything.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you show me this?””
“I was ashamed.””
“You should have been honest.””
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
He looked at me.
“She wasn’t the only person who betrayed me tonight.””
He flinched.
And that told me he knew.
I walked outside again.
I needed air.
I needed space.
I needed to understand how the two people closest to me could make me feel like a stranger in my own life.
Behind me, I heard footsteps.
But it wasn’t Daniel.
It was Ryan.
He stopped a few feet away.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not telling you sooner.””
I studied his face.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Not everything.””
“What did you know?””
Ryan looked toward the street.
“I knew Megan was obsessed with Daniel.””
My heart tightened.
“How long?””
“Almost a year.””
A year.
A year of my best friend smiling at me.
A year of her asking about my marriage.
A year of her telling me how lucky I was.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Ryan looked ashamed.
“Because I thought she would stop.””
“And she didn’t.””
“No.””
He reached into his jacket pocket.
Then he handed me something.
A folded piece of paper.
“What is this?””
“Something I found in our house.””
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was Megan’s.
And the first line made my blood run cold.
*Plan B: If Daniel finally sees the truth about Maya…*
I looked at Ryan.
“What is this?””
His voice dropped.
“I think you need to read the rest.””
I looked down at the page.
May you like
And realized the dinner had never been an accident.
It had been planned.
