Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Smile

I sat in my car for nearly twenty minutes without turning the engine on.

The paper was on my passenger seat.

I had read it three times.

And every time, the words felt impossible.

Because Megan wasn’t just jealous.

She wasn’t just crossing boundaries.

She had been building a story in her head where she was the victim.

Where I was the obstacle.

The handwriting was unmistakably hers.

*Plan B: Make him realize he’s unhappy.*

*Step one: Remind him how much easier things are with me.*

*Step two: Make Maya look controlling.*

*Step three: Let her jealousy push him away.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

She wanted me to look crazy.

That was the part that scared me most.

She didn’t want to steal Daniel by openly fighting me.

She wanted me to destroy myself first.

A knock on the window made me jump.

Daniel.

I rolled the window down slightly.

“I need time.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

His face fell.

“I deserve that.””

I looked at him.

“I spent twelve years defending her.””

“I know.””

“I told people she was like my sister.””

“I know.””

“And all this time she was trying to get closer to you.””

Daniel looked away.

“I should have seen it.””

“Yes.””

The answer came out before I could stop it.

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

I hated that I believed his regret.

Because it would have been easier if he was the villain.

If he had betrayed me completely.

If he had chosen her.

Then I would know what to do.

But instead, I was standing between anger and heartbreak.

The next morning, I woke up to forty-seven notifications.

Most were from Megan.

*We need to talk.*

*You’re letting people manipulate you.*

*Ryan is bitter because our marriage failed.*

*Daniel knows the truth about you.*

That last message made me stop.

The truth about me.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

It was a photo.

My heart stopped.

It was Megan.

Standing outside my house.

Holding flowers.

The date was two weeks earlier.

I hadn’t been home.

I had been at work.

Under the photo was a message.

*She came to my house too. She told me she was worried about you. I didn’t believe her.*

It was from Ryan.

I called him immediately.

He answered after one ring.

“Did you see it?””

“Yes.””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“She wasn’t only going after Daniel.””

“What do you mean?””

“She was trying to collect information.””

“Information?””

“About your marriage.””

I sat on the edge of my bed.

“What kind of information?””

“Your arguments. Your problems. Your weak points.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Ryan was silent.

Then he said:

“Because she wanted to become the person Daniel turned to when things got bad.””

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly every memory looked different.

Every conversation.

Every innocent moment.

The time Megan asked if Daniel and I were fighting.

The time she asked if he still found me attractive.

The time she said, “Men eventually get tired of feeling unappreciated.””

I had thought she was giving advice.

She was planting ideas.

I met Daniel later that afternoon at a coffee shop.

Neither of us touched our drinks.

“I need to ask you something,” I said.

He nodded.

“Anything.””

“Did you ever give her a reason to think there was something between you?””

His face changed.

A painful question.

But one I needed answered.

“No.””

“Not even once?””

“No.””

I studied him.

“Did you like the attention?””

He looked down.

After a long pause, he answered.

“Yes.””

That honesty hurt.

But it mattered.

“I liked feeling admired,” he admitted.

“I liked that someone thought I was interesting.””

I nodded slowly.

“And you ignored where it was coming from.””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know if sorry is enough.””

“I know.””

For a while, we sat there quietly.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel?””

He showed me the phone.

Megan.

Calling.

I almost told him not to answer.

But something stopped me.

“Put it on speaker.””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Megan.””

Her voice came immediately.

“Daniel, thank God.””

She sounded scared.

Not angry.

Scared.

“She’s turned everyone against me.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Megan…”

“No, listen. You need to understand something.””

I leaned closer.

Megan lowered her voice.

“I didn’t want to do this.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Do what?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Tell Maya what happened the night she was in the hospital.””

My entire body went still.

Daniel’s face drained of color.

The coffee shop disappeared around me.

“What hospital?”” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

And Megan’s voice came through the phone.

“Maya doesn’t know, does she?””

The call suddenly went silent.

Then Megan said one sentence.

May you like

One sentence that changed everything.

“Daniel never told you why he was really there that night.””
