Chapter 1: The Joke That Wasn’t Funny
I thought the worst thing that could happen at a birthday dinner was an awkward argument.
I was wrong.
The worst thing was walking back from the restroom and seeing my husband laughing while my best friend sat on his lap in front of thirty people.
For five minutes, I had been gone.
Five minutes to wash my hands, fix the lipstick stain on my glass, and send a quick text to my sister.
Five minutes was all it took for my entire marriage to look different.
The restaurant was loud when I stepped back into the dining room. Plates clinked. Someone near the bar was laughing too loudly. A birthday song had just ended, and everyone at our long table was still caught up in the celebration.
Then I saw them.
Megan.
My best friend of twelve years.
Sitting on my husband Daniel’s lap.
For a second, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
She wasn’t standing beside him.
She wasn’t leaning over his chair.
She was sitting comfortably across his legs, one arm wrapped around his neck like she belonged there.
Daniel’s hand rested awkwardly at his side, but he was smiling.
Laughing.
Like this was normal.
Like I was the only person in the room who didn’t understand the joke.
The noise around me faded.
Megan noticed me first.
Her eyes met mine.
And instead of jumping up in embarrassment, she smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not an apologetic smile.
A knowing smile.
Then she tightened her arm around Daniel’s neck.
That tiny movement hurt more than the sight itself.
Because Megan knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew every detail of my relationship with Daniel.
She was there when we met.
She was there when he proposed.
She was the person who held my wedding dress while I stood in front of the mirror crying because I finally felt like I had found my forever.
“You look beautiful,” she had whispered that day.
“I’ve never seen you this happy.””
I believed her.
I trusted her.
I loved her like family.
I walked toward the table slowly.
My heart was beating so hard I could hear it.
“Daniel,” I said.
His smile disappeared instantly.
His face went pale.
“Maya,” he said quietly.
Megan looked between us and laughed.
“Oh my God, relax.””
I stared at her.
“Relax?””
She rolled her eyes and finally looked amused.
“We’re joking.””
I glanced around the table.
Some people looked uncomfortable.
Others suddenly became very interested in their drinks.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody thought it was funny.
“What are you doing?”” I asked.
My voice was calm, but my hands were shaking.
Megan shrugged.
“Having fun. You should try it sometime.””
Daniel stood halfway, but Megan didn’t move immediately.
That bothered me.
A lot.
“Megan,” Daniel said under his breath.
Only then did she slide off his lap.
She adjusted her dress like nothing happened.
“You’re being dramatic,” she said.
I stared at her.
Then I looked across the table.
Her husband, Ryan, was sitting silently beside an untouched plate of food.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Just tired.
Like this wasn’t the first time he had watched his wife cross a line.
An idea came to me.
Maybe it was childish.
Maybe it was petty.
But in that moment, I needed her to understand.
I smiled slightly.
“Okay.””
Everyone looked at me.
“If it’s really just a joke…”
I pointed toward Ryan.
“Then I’ll sit on Ryan’s lap.””
The entire table went silent.
Megan’s expression changed immediately.
Her smile vanished.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” she snapped.
I tilted my head.
“Why?””
Her jaw tightened.
“Because that’s different.””
“How?””
I looked around the table.
“Please explain how.””
Nobody spoke.
Megan crossed her arms.
“You know exactly why.””
There it was.
The truth hiding inside the joke.
When she did it, it was harmless.
When I suggested the same thing, suddenly it became inappropriate.
Suddenly there were rules.
Suddenly there were boundaries.
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what I thought.””
Megan grabbed her purse.
“You’re unbelievable.””
“Me?””
“Yes, you.”” Her voice rose.
“After twelve years, you should know I would never do anything wrong.””
I looked directly at her.
“Then explain the joke.””
She stopped.
For the first time all night, she looked uncomfortable.
“Explain it,” I repeated.
Nothing.
Not one person laughed.
Megan’s face hardened.
“You’re creating drama because you’re insecure.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because they came from someone who knew exactly where my wounds were.
Someone who knew I had spent years trying not to be the jealous wife.
Someone who knew I trusted her.
I looked at Daniel.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
That hurt even more.
Without saying another word, I turned and walked outside.
The cold air hit my face.
I stood near the entrance, trying to breathe.
A minute later, the door opened behind me.
“Maya.””
Daniel.
I didn’t turn around.
“Don’t.””
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed quietly.
“Are you sorry because you’re embarrassed, or are you sorry because you let it happen?””
He went silent.
That silence told me everything.
I turned around.
“Daniel.””
His eyes were red.
“There’s something I need to tell you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He looked back through the restaurant window at Megan.
“She’s done things like this before.””
The world seemed to slow down.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She’s made comments.””
“What kind of comments?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Maya…”
“Tell me.””
He looked ashamed.
“She told me once that if you and I ever divorced, she would ‘take care of me.’”
The cold suddenly felt sharper.
I stared at him.
“What?””
“It was months ago.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I thought she was joking.””
The same word.
Joking.
A word people used when they wanted permission to hurt someone.
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
Then buzzed again.
Then again.
Messages from Megan.
*You are seriously overreacting.*
*I can’t believe you’re acting like this after everything I’ve done for you.*
*You’re paranoid.*
I looked through the restaurant window.
Megan was standing inside.
Ryan was looking at her.
His expression broke something inside me.
He wasn’t defending her.
He wasn’t angry at me.
He looked like a man who had been carrying a secret for a very long time.
Then the restaurant door opened.
One of our friends, Claire, stepped outside.
Her face was pale.
She looked terrified.
“Maya,” she whispered.
I turned toward her.
“What happened?””
She looked back through the glass at Megan.
Then she lowered her voice.
“You need to know something.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“I heard what Megan whispered to Daniel right before she sat on his lap.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“What did she say?””
Claire looked at me with tears forming in her eyes.
“She said…”
She stopped.
May you like
And for a moment, she looked almost afraid to repeat it.
“She said she knew exactly how to make you leave him.””
