Chapter 2: The Secret She Thought Nobody Heard

I stared at Claire.

The words didn’t make sense.

Make me leave him?

My mind searched for another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A joke taken too far.

Anything.

But Claire’s expression told me she wasn’t guessing.

She had heard something.

“What exactly did she say?”” I asked.

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Claire looked toward the window again.

Inside, Megan was sitting at the table, scrolling through her phone like she hadn’t just detonated my entire night.

“She leaned close to Daniel before she sat down,” Claire whispered.

“I thought she was just teasing him.””

“And then?””

Claire swallowed.

“She said, ‘Your wife is predictable. All I have to do is push the right buttons, and she’ll walk away.’”

My hands went numb.

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You heard that?”” he asked Claire.

Claire nodded.

“I didn’t understand what she meant at the time.””

Daniel looked down.

I felt something crack inside me.

Because he knew.

Maybe not everything.

Maybe not the whole plan.

But he knew enough.

“You heard her say that,” I whispered.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“Did you hear her?””

Daniel looked miserable.

“Yes.””

The answer landed harder than I expected.

“You heard her say she wanted me to leave you?””

“She said it like she was joking.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I thought it was weird, but I didn’t think she meant anything.””

I looked back at the restaurant.

At the woman who had once been the person I called when I had good news.

The person who knew my fears.

The person who knew exactly how much losing Daniel would hurt me.

And she was using that knowledge like a weapon.

I walked back inside.

The table went quiet.

Megan looked up.

Her smile returned.

“What now?””

I ignored her.

I looked at Ryan.

“Can I ask you something?””

His face tightened.

“Maya…”

“No, I need to know.””

Ryan looked down at his hands.

“What?””

“Has Megan ever done this before?””

A strange silence filled the room.

Everyone understood what I meant.

Not the lap.

The behavior.

The flirting.

The crossing lines.

Ryan closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.””

Megan’s expression changed.

“Ryan.””

He looked at her.

For the first time all night, he didn’t look tired.

He looked done.

“You told me not to embarrass you.””

Megan stood.

“Don’t do this.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No. I’m tired of pretending.””

The table became completely still.

I watched Megan’s confidence disappear.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What are you talking about?”” she asked.

Ryan laughed sadly.

“I’m talking about the messages.””

My heart jumped.

“What messages?””

Megan immediately turned toward him.

“Ryan, stop.””

That reaction answered the question before he did.

Ryan pulled out his phone.

“She’s been texting Daniel for months.””

Everyone froze.

Megan’s face went white.

“That’s not what it looks like.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked shocked.

“Months?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I thought they were just friendly.””

Ryan looked at him.

“Did she tell you she missed having someone who understood her?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Did she tell you your wife didn’t appreciate you enough?””

The silence was devastating.

Because Daniel’s face changed again.

He remembered.

I saw it.

“Megan,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

And for the first time, she wasn’t pretending.

There was anger there.

Not guilt.

Anger.

“You always had everything,” she said.

The words were quiet.

But everyone heard them.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She laughed softly.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

Ryan stood.

“Megan.””

“No, I’m done pretending.””

She looked directly at me.

“You had the perfect husband. The perfect house. The perfect life.””

My stomach twisted.

“And you thought that gave you the right to take it?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I thought maybe you didn’t deserve it.””

The room went silent.

Even Megan seemed surprised by what she had admitted.

Ryan shook his head.

“I can’t believe you’re saying this out loud.””

She grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Nobody stopped her.

She walked toward the door.

Then she paused.

She turned back toward Daniel.

And she smiled.

A small, confident smile.

Like she still believed she had control.

“Ask him about the night you were out of town.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel froze.

I looked at him.

“What night?””

He didn’t answer.

Megan walked away.

The door closed behind her.

And suddenly, the biggest question wasn’t why Megan sat on my husband’s lap.

It was what happened the night I wasn’t there.

I turned slowly toward Daniel.

“Daniel.””

May you like

He looked terrified.

“What happened while I was gone?””
