Chapter 9: The Final Witness

Daniel Hayes forgot how to breathe.

The phone was still pressed against Rachel’s hand, but all he could hear was his daughter’s voice.

A voice filled with fear.

A voice that sounded far too much like Emily on the night she died.

“Daddy…”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Lily, where are you?””

Silence.

Then a shaky breath.

“I don’t know.””

His heart dropped.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“I’m in a room.””

“Look around.””

“I did.””

Her voice cracked.

“There are no windows.””

Daniel closed his eyes for a second.

Every instinct inside him screamed.

He had spent five years trapped behind walls.

Now his daughter was somewhere hidden.

Somewhere alone.

“Lily, listen to me.””

“I’m listening.””

“You are not alone.””

A pause.

“Yes, I am.””

“No.””

Daniel forced his voice to stay calm.

“You’re not.””

He looked at Victoria.

At Torres.

At Pierce.

Everyone was watching him.

“We’re coming for you.””

Lily was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“I know who did it.””

Daniel felt the entire room freeze.

“Who?””

Another silence.

Then:

“It was Aunt Victoria.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel slowly turned.

Victoria’s face went completely pale.

Rachel looked between them.

“No.””

Lily continued.

“She told me.””

Daniel stared at Victoria.

“You told her?””

Victoria looked devastated.

“No.””

Daniel lifted the phone.

“Lily, what did she tell you?””

His daughter’s voice trembled.

“She said she was sorry.””

Daniel felt something twist inside him.

Sorry.

A word that could mean anything.

A word guilty people used.

A word broken people used.

“Lily, where is she?””

“I don’t know.””

“Who is with you?””

The line became quiet.

Then Lily whispered:

“Someone else.””

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Who?””

A small sound came through the phone.

Like someone opening a door.

Lily stopped speaking.

“Lily?””

Nothing.

“Lily!””

Then another voice answered.

A man.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

“You really should stop asking questions, Daniel.””

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

Thomas Reed.

“I swear to God—”

Reed laughed softly.

“You still think anger changes anything.””

“Where is my daughter?””

“She’s safe.””

“She’s eight years old.””

“Yes.””

“You took her.””

“No.””

Reed’s voice hardened.

“I rescued her from people who were lying to her.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“You’re the liar.””

A long pause.

Then Reed said:

“Ask Victoria why Emily never told you about her.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“She said she was protecting me.””

Reed laughed.

“She always had a talent for making people believe they were the hero.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Reed continued.

“She didn’t tell you because she knew you would hate her.””

Daniel froze.

Victoria looked away.

The silence was enough.

“Why?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because it wasn’t just that I was Emily’s daughter.””

Daniel waited.

Victoria swallowed.

“She knew I was connected to what happened.””

Daniel felt the room shift.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at him.

“My father used me.””

Reed’s voice interrupted.

“Tell him the whole truth.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I was there.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“The night Emily died.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria looked like she had been carrying the words for years.

“I was there.””

Daniel stepped back.

“You were at my house?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victoria wiped her face.

“Because my father asked me to meet Emily.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“And?””

“I went there to warn her.””

Daniel stopped.

“Warn her?””

“Yes.””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“I had discovered what my father was doing.””

Reed’s voice became angry.

“Don’t rewrite history.””

Victoria ignored him.

“I found documents. Money transfers. Evidence.””

Daniel listened.

“My father knew I found out.””

“So he sent you to Emily.””

Victoria nodded.

“He wanted me to convince her to stop.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

Her voice became barely audible.

“I helped her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Helped her do what?””

“Escape.””

The words hit everyone.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Escape?””

Victoria nodded.

“Emily wasn’t supposed to die that night.””

Daniel stared.

“Then what happened?””

Victoria looked at him.

“My father found us.””

The room became silent.

Even Reed stopped speaking.

Victoria continued.

“Emily had the evidence. She had everything she needed to expose him.””

Daniel looked at Pierce.

“You knew.””

Pierce nodded slowly.

“I suspected.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Pierce looked ashamed.

“Because Reed controlled the department.””

Victoria continued.

“My father threatened Emily.””

“With what?””

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“With Lily.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“He threatened my daughter?””

“Yes.””

Victoria’s voice broke.

“He said if Emily went to the police, Lily would disappear.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pieces finally began fitting together.

Emily wasn’t hiding things because she didn’t trust him.

She was trying to protect their child.

“What happened after?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“My father attacked Emily.””

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“I tried to stop him.””

“Did you?””

Victoria looked at him.

“No.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I failed.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Reed’s voice came through the phone.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned toward the phone.

Reed sounded angry now.

Not calm.

Not controlled.

Angry.

“You all want a confession?””

A pause.

“Fine.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You killed Emily.””

“No.””

The answer surprised him.

Reed continued.

“Emily died because she trusted the wrong person.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Reed laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Then explain.””

Reed was quiet.

Then:

“The person who betrayed Emily wasn’t me.””

Everyone froze.

Victoria whispered:

“What?””

Reed continued.

“She had evidence against me. She had evidence against Victor. She had evidence against everyone.””

Daniel waited.

“Someone else wanted that evidence.””

“Who?””

Reed laughed.

“You’re standing next to her.””

Daniel turned.

Victoria looked horrified.

“No.””

Reed continued.

“Ask her why Emily’s final message wasn’t for you.””

Daniel remembered the letter.

The hidden note.

The warning.

The person who will testify against you is not the person you should fear most.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Where were you when Emily died?””

Victoria couldn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“I was there.””

“And?””

Her lips trembled.

“I saw what happened.””

“Who killed her?””

Victoria looked at the phone.

Then at Daniel.

Then she whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Victoria covered her face.

“Because when I woke up…”

She stopped.

Daniel felt cold.

“When you woke up?””

Victoria looked at him.

“I was holding the weapon.””

The room went silent.

Rachel stepped back.

Torres stared.

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly the entire case had a new shape.

Victoria wasn’t just the prosecutor.

She wasn’t just Emily’s secret daughter.

She was the person who had been found at the scene.

The person holding the weapon.

The person everyone should have suspected.

Except nobody knew.

Because someone changed the evidence.

Someone changed the story.

Someone blamed Daniel.

Daniel looked at the phone.

“Reed.””

No answer.

The line had gone silent.

Rachel checked.

“He disconnected.””

Daniel stared at Victoria.

“Tell me everything.””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“I will.””

“Start from the beginning.””

She took a deep breath.

“The night Emily died…”

A loud crash interrupted her.

Everyone turned.

The front window shattered.

The room erupted.

Torres pushed Daniel down.

Rachel grabbed the phone.

A single piece of paper flew through the broken window.

Daniel picked it up.

Only one sentence was written.

*You are finally asking the right questions.*

Underneath it was a name.

Not Thomas Reed.

Not Victor Hale.

Not Victoria Black.

A name Daniel had never expected.

His own.

*Daniel Hayes.*

Rachel looked at him.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel stared at the paper.

And then he saw the handwriting.

It wasn’t Reed’s.

It wasn’t Emily’s.

It wasn’t Victoria’s.

It was his.

The same handwriting as every letter he had written from prison.

The same handwriting as his final statement.

Impossible.

Unless…

Someone had been inside his life long before Emily died.

Someone who knew him better than anyone.

Someone who had been waiting for five years.

And then Daniel’s phone rang.

A number appeared on the screen.

A number he recognized.

May you like

Because it belonged to the person he had buried five years ago.

Emily Hayes.
