Chapter 4: The Woman in the Recording

Daniel Hayes had spent five years believing he knew exactly how his wife died.

He remembered the police lights.

The shattered glass.

The officers standing over Emily’s body.

The blood on his shirt.

The weapon found in his home.

Every piece of evidence had been placed in front of a jury like pieces of a puzzle.

And the final picture was simple.

Daniel killed Emily.

But now a prison guard was standing in front of him, telling him there was a video from that night.

A video showing someone who was supposed to be dead.

Daniel gripped the metal bars of his cell.

“Who?””

The guard looked around nervously.

“Not here.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You came to my cell.””

“I know.””

“Then talk.””

The officer swallowed.

“My name is Officer James Carter.””

Daniel studied him.

He had seen Carter before.

A quiet officer.

Usually assigned to night shifts.

Never involved in conversations.

Never involved in anything.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Carter looked uncomfortable.

“Because I watched what happened to you for five years.””

Daniel waited.

“And?””

“And I never believed the story.””

The words hit harder than Daniel expected.

After five years of hearing everyone call him a murderer, hearing one person say they doubted it felt almost painful.

“Why?””

Carter looked down.

“Because I saw the evidence room logs.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“The evidence from your case.””

Carter lowered his voice.

“Things were moved.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Moved by who?””

Carter didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Where is the video?””

Carter hesitated.

“I don’t have it.””

“Then who does?””

A sound came from behind Carter.

Footsteps.

The officer immediately stepped away.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Someone is coming.””

Daniel watched as Carter disappeared down the hallway.

Seconds later, another guard appeared.

This one was older.

Bigger.

His face expressionless.

“Hayes.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

The guard unlocked the food slot.

“There’s been a mistake.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What kind of mistake?””

The guard looked directly into his eyes.

“The kind that gets people killed.””

Then he walked away.

Daniel stood there, trying to understand what was happening.

Five years ago, everyone wanted him silent.

Now, everyone wanted him scared.

But something had changed.

Someone had found proof.

And for the first time, the people who destroyed his life were nervous.

An hour later, Daniel was sitting in another room.

Not an execution chamber.

Not yet.

A private interview room.

Rachel Morgan sat across from him.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been fighting a battle nobody else could see.

“They showed you the video?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because someone is afraid of it.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“Who told you?””

“An officer named Carter.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“You talked to Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, that’s dangerous.””

He looked at her.

“Everything is dangerous now.””

Rachel was silent.

Then she opened her laptop.

“I managed to get access to a copy.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“The video?””

Rachel nodded.

“I don’t know who sent it.””

“Play it.””

She hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Play it.””

Rachel pressed a button.

The screen went black.

Then the image appeared.

A security camera.

Grainy.

Black and white.

Timestamp:

*11:48 PM*

Daniel recognized the room immediately.

His house.

The hallway outside the living room.

His throat tightened.

The camera angle showed the front door.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then someone entered.

Daniel leaned closer.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark jacket.

The quality was poor, but Daniel knew the shape of his body.

The way he walked.

The way he moved.

Rachel watched his reaction.

“Do you know him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he did.

The man turned slightly toward the camera.

The face was visible.

Daniel felt the room spin.

“No.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Daniel?””

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

The person on the screen was not a stranger.

Not Victor Hale.

Not Thomas Reed.

Not anyone he expected.

It was Emily.

His wife.

Alive.

Walking through their house twenty minutes after prosecutors claimed she was already dead.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The video continued.

Emily looked toward the camera.

Like she knew it was there.

Then she reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a phone.

She made a call.

The audio was damaged.

But the words were clear enough.

“Daniel doesn’t know.””

Daniel felt his entire body go cold.

Rachel paused the video.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“She was alive.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“But that means…”

“It means the timeline in your trial was false.””

Daniel stared at the frozen image of Emily.

Alive.

Standing inside their home.

Twenty minutes after the official time of death.

For five years, he had been called a murderer.

For five years, he had been told he was the last person to see his wife alive.

But the truth was different.

Someone had changed the story.

Someone had moved the pieces.

Someone had built an entire case around a lie.

Rachel continued.

“There’s more.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She pressed play again.

The video moved forward.

Emily was still on the phone.

Then another person entered the hallway.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Victor Hale.

Emily turned toward him.

They spoke.

The audio was unclear.

Rachel increased the volume.

Static filled the room.

Then a few words became audible.

Victor’s voice.

“You should have taken the money.””

Emily responded.

“I should have gone to the police.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

Rachel looked at him.

“Listen.””

Victor stepped closer to Emily.

“You don’t understand what happens when people threaten powerful men.””

Emily didn’t move.

“You threatened my family.””

Victor laughed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I warned you.””

Daniel felt anger burning through him.

Then the video changed.

The camera angle shifted.

Another person entered.

Daniel stared.

His heart stopped.

Because he knew that person too.

Detective Thomas Reed.

The officer who investigated Emily’s death.

The officer who found the weapon.

The officer who testified against Daniel.

The officer who told the jury that Daniel’s behavior was suspicious.

Reed walked toward Emily and Victor.

Daniel watched as his entire world collapsed.

Rachel whispered:

“He was involved.””

Daniel couldn’t speak.

The video continued.

Reed looked at Emily.

“You made this harder than it needed to be.””

Emily stepped back.

“You’re supposed to protect people.””

Reed smiled.

“No.””

He said something that made Daniel’s blood freeze.

“I’m supposed to protect the people who pay me.””

The video suddenly distorted.

The screen flickered.

Then went black.

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Rachel checked the file.

“That’s where it ends.””

“What happened after?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stood up.

“Find out.””

Rachel looked at him.

“We have a bigger problem.””

“What?””

She turned the laptop toward him.

On the screen was a news alert.

*EXECUTION DELAYED AFTER NEW EVIDENCE SURFACES IN HAYES CASE*

Daniel looked at the headline.

Then below it.

Another update.

His face changed.

Because the article had information that had not been released publicly.

Information only someone involved in the investigation could know.

The article mentioned Lily.

Not by name.

But by description.

The daughter of convicted murderer Daniel Hayes.

Rachel closed the laptop.

“Someone leaked her location.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What?””

“Your daughter is being followed.””

The room became silent.

Daniel thought about Lily holding the blue envelope.

Her frightened eyes.

Her whisper.

Trust no one.

He stood slowly.

“Where is she?””

Rachel looked away.

“Daniel…”

“Where is my daughter?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she answered.

“She’s not at home.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“She left with someone this morning.””

His heart dropped.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at the security footage she had just received.

Then she turned the screen toward him.

A photograph appeared.

A woman holding Lily’s hand outside the courthouse.

Daniel stared.

He knew that face.

Everyone in his case knew that face.

Because she had been the person who convinced the jury Daniel was guilty.

The person who stood in court and described him as a dangerous man.

The person who had spent five years making sure he died.

Rachel whispered:

“Daniel…”

He couldn’t move.

Because the woman standing beside his daughter was his former prosecutor.

The woman who destroyed his life.

And she was holding a document in her other hand.

May you like

A document with Emily Hayes’ signature on it.

A signature dated three days after Emily’s supposed death.
