Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew
Daniel Hayes read Emily’s note again.
*She knows what really happened.*
Five words.
Five words that turned everything he believed upside down.
He had spent years searching for the person who destroyed his life.
He imagined a stranger.
A criminal.
A powerful businessman hiding behind money.
He never imagined the answer would be connected to the woman who stood in court and helped put him on death row.
Victoria Black.
The prosecutor.
The woman who knew every detail of the case.
The woman who knew exactly how to make twelve strangers believe Daniel was a monster.
Rachel looked at the photograph again.
“I don’t understand.””
Torres leaned back in his chair.
“Neither did I.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“When?””
Torres opened the folder.
“Before I was removed from the investigation.””
Daniel waited.
“Emily kept records of everything. She was careful. She knew someone was watching her.””
Torres pointed at the photograph.
“She found out Victoria existed.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Torres sighed.
“It means Emily discovered a secret she was never supposed to find.””
Daniel looked at the picture.
A younger Victoria.
A baby.
Emily standing beside them.
“Emily had another daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And she never told me?””
Torres looked down.
“That’s the part I still don’t understand.””
Daniel felt a sharp pain in his chest.
Not anger.
Something else.
Confusion.
Emily had trusted him with everything.
Or at least he thought she had.
They had shared bills.
Dreams.
Fears.
The future they planned for Lily.
How could she hide something this big?
Rachel noticed his expression.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“She had a reason.””
“You don’t know that.””
“No,” Rachel admitted.
“But I know your wife enough from these files to understand one thing.””
“What?””
“She wasn’t hiding Victoria from you because she didn’t love you.””
Daniel looked away.
“Then why?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was still missing.
Across town, Lily sat in a quiet room inside Victoria Black’s house.
It was not what she expected.
She expected something cold.
A place where someone who had helped destroy her father would live.
Instead, the house felt normal.
Family pictures.
Books.
Plants near the windows.
A kitchen that smelled like cinnamon.
That somehow made Lily more uncomfortable.
Because monsters were supposed to look like monsters.
They weren’t supposed to have warm homes.
They weren’t supposed to smile kindly.
Victoria entered the room carrying two cups of hot chocolate.
“You used to like this.””
Lily looked up.
“You knew?””
Victoria stopped.
Then slowly nodded.
“Your mother told me.””
Lily stared.
“You knew my mom?””
Victoria sat across from her.
“Yes.””
“Before she died?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
The question landed hard.
Victoria looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
Lily frowned.
“You’re a grown-up.””
Victoria gave a sad smile.
“Adults get scared too.””
“Of what?””
Victoria looked toward the window.
“Of losing everything.””
Lily held the blue envelope tighter.
“My dad lost everything.””
Victoria closed her eyes briefly.
“I know.””
“Because of you.””
The words hurt.
Lily could tell.
But Victoria didn’t get angry.
She didn’t defend herself.
She simply whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer surprised Lily.
“You admit it?””
Victoria looked at her.
“I made choices.””
“Bad choices?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked toward the envelope.
“Because I thought I was protecting someone.””
“My mom?””
Victoria said nothing.
And Lily understood.
Not everything.
But enough.
“You knew she was alive longer than they said.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“How do you know that?””
“My dad saw a video.””
Victoria froze.
For the first time, Lily saw real fear.
Not pretend fear.
Not adult pretending.
Real fear.
“What video?””
“A video from our house.””
Victoria stood immediately.
“Who showed him?””
“I don’t know.””
Victoria walked toward the window.
Her breathing changed.
Lily watched carefully.
“You’re scared.””
Victoria turned around.
“Lily, listen to me.””
“No.””
The little girl stood.
“You listen.””
Victoria stared.
“My dad didn’t kill my mom.””
A long silence.
Then Victoria whispered:
“I know.””
Lily froze.
“What?””
“I know.””
“Then why did you tell everyone he did?””
Victoria looked like she had been waiting five years for someone to ask that question.
“Because I was trying to save you.””
Back at the prison, Daniel felt like he was drowning in unanswered questions.
“Victoria is Emily’s daughter.””
Torres nodded.
“Yes.””
“And she helped convict me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Torres looked at Rachel.
Rachel understood.
“You need to hear the whole story.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What story?””
Rachel opened another file.
“This one was hidden from the public.””
She placed a document on the table.
Daniel read the first line.
*Adoption Record.*
His eyes narrowed.
“Victoria wasn’t raised by Emily.””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Rachel looked at Torres.
Torres answered.
“Her biological father.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Torres hesitated.
Then said:
“Thomas Reed.””
The room went silent.
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
The detective.
The man who controlled the investigation.
The man who helped build the case against him.
The man who was secretly involved with Emily.
Rachel continued.
“Emily had Victoria when she was very young.””
Daniel stared at the paperwork.
“Reed was her father?””
“Yes.””
“And he killed Emily?””
Torres shook his head.
“We don’t know.””
Daniel looked frustrated.
“Then what do we know?””
Torres leaned forward.
“We know Emily discovered Reed was involved in something bigger.””
“What?””
“Corruption.””
Daniel waited.
“Reed and Victor Hale were moving illegal money through fake accounts.””
Rachel added:
“And Emily found proof.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“So Victoria knew?””
Torres nodded.
“She found out years later.””
“How?””
“Her father told her.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“He manipulated his own daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And she believed him.””
“For a while.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why prosecute me?””
Torres sighed.
“Because Reed convinced her that you were responsible.””
Daniel stared.
“He lied to her.””
“Yes.””
“Just like he lied to everyone.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stood.
“So Victoria spent five years destroying me because she was protecting a lie.””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Because that was exactly what happened.
The door suddenly opened.
A prison officer rushed inside.
Everyone turned.
The officer looked at Daniel.
“Your daughter is missing.””
Daniel froze.
The entire room changed.
“What?””
Rachel stood.
“What do you mean missing?””
The officer looked nervous.
“She left Victoria Black’s residence twenty minutes ago.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“With who?””
“We don’t know.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Find her.””
The officer hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Find my daughter.””
The officer looked at Rachel.
Then back at Daniel.
“There’s something else.””
Daniel felt cold.
“What?””
The officer handed Rachel a small envelope.
Blue.
Faded.
Old.
Rachel opened it carefully.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Daniel watched her expression change.
“What does it say?””
Rachel looked up.
Her face was white.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She handed him the paper.
His eyes moved across the handwriting.
Emily’s handwriting.
Again.
But this time the message was not for him.
It was for Victoria.
Only one sentence.
*If you are reading this, then he already found you.*
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“Who is he?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the officer answered.
“Someone just called the prison.””
Daniel turned.
“What did they say?””
The officer swallowed.
“They said they have Lily.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“Who?””
The officer looked down.
“The caller gave a name.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Thomas Reed.””
