Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Lie
The name echoed inside Daniel Hayes’ mind long after the officer stopped speaking.
*Thomas Reed.*
The detective who arrived first.
The detective who collected the evidence.
The detective who told the world Daniel was a murderer.
The detective who had been hiding in the shadows for five years.
And now he had Daniel’s daughter.
Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“No, he wouldn’t.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“He wouldn’t take Lily.””
Torres stared at the floor.
“Daniel…”
Daniel turned sharply.
“You know something.””
Torres didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What do you know?””
Torres sighed.
“I know Thomas Reed doesn’t do anything without a reason.””
Rachel looked at him.
“You think he planned this?””
“I think everything he has done for the last five years has been planned.””
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“My daughter is eight years old.””
“I know.””
“She has nothing to do with this.””
Torres looked at him.
“That’s why he took her.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“Because Lily is the one thing none of them could control.””
Rachel understood immediately.
“Emily.””
Torres nodded.
“Emily’s weakness was always her family.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Reed knew something.””
“What?””
Torres opened the old file.
“Emily didn’t just leave evidence behind.””
He pulled out a photograph.
A small blue notebook.
“She left a backup plan.””
Daniel looked at it.
“The blue box.””
“Yes.””
“She hid it.””
“Yes.””
“And Lily found it.””
Torres nodded.
“Exactly.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“She knew where it was.””
“Maybe.””
“No.””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Not maybe.””
His voice became stronger.
“Emily told Lily.””
Rachel frowned.
“Daniel, she was three years old.””
“She remembered.””
He looked at both of them.
“She remembered because Emily made sure she would.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they all knew what that meant.
Emily had trusted her daughter with a secret before she died.
A secret important enough to survive.
Twenty miles away, Thomas Reed sat across from Lily Hayes.
He looked nothing like the monster Daniel imagined.
That was what made him dangerous.
He looked normal.
Gray hair.
Calm voice.
A grandfather-like smile.
The kind of person strangers trusted.
Lily sat across from him in an abandoned office building.
Dust covered the windows.
Old papers filled the desks.
She held her backpack tightly.
“You lied to everyone.””
Reed smiled.
“About what?””
“My dad.””
Reed leaned back.
“Your father was convicted.””
“That doesn’t mean he did it.””
The smile disappeared slightly.
“You sound like your mother.””
Lily stared at him.
“You knew my mom was innocent.””
Reed was silent.
Then he said:
“Your mother was too curious.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Reed looked at the child in front of him.
For a moment, something almost like regret appeared.
Almost.
“She should have stopped asking questions.””
Lily felt a chill.
“You hurt her.””
Reed looked away.
“I made choices.””
“That’s what everyone says when they do bad things.””
For the first time, Reed looked surprised.
“You’re very smart.””
“My dad says smart people know when someone is lying.””
Reed leaned forward.
“Your father also believed he could beat the system.””
“He didn’t lose.””
Reed frowned.
“What?””
“He survived.””
The answer clearly bothered him.
Lily noticed.
She had spent her whole life watching adults.
Watching what they said.
Watching what they avoided.
And Thomas Reed was avoiding something.
“You’re scared.””
Reed laughed quietly.
“Of what?””
“The truth.””
His expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
“My mom did.””
That sentence changed everything.
Reed stopped moving.
“What did you say?””
“My mom knew.””
Lily reached into her backpack.
Reed’s eyes immediately followed.
Not the way a normal person looked.
The way someone looked at something they feared.
“You have it.””
Lily didn’t answer.
“The envelope.””
She stayed quiet.
Reed stood.
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Lily.””
“No.””
The room changed.
The friendly man disappeared.
The dangerous one appeared.
“You don’t know what that envelope contains.””
“My mom wanted my dad to have it.””
“Your mother made mistakes.””
Lily looked directly at him.
“My mom trusted my dad.””
Reed stared.
Then he whispered:
“That was her biggest mistake.””
Back at the prison, Daniel listened as investigators tried to trace Reed’s location.
Every minute felt impossible.
Every second without Lily felt like failure.
Rachel walked back into the room.
“We have something.””
Daniel immediately stood.
“What?””
“Victoria contacted us.””
Daniel froze.
“She knows where Lily is?””
Rachel nodded.
“Maybe.””
“Maybe?””
Rachel handed him a phone.
A message was waiting.
From Victoria.
*I know who took her. I know why. But if you want Lily back alive, you need to hear the truth from me.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
“She knew.””
Rachel nodded.
“She knows more than she told us.””
Daniel’s anger rose.
“She watched me go to death row knowing the truth.””
Rachel didn’t defend her.
Because she couldn’t.
“Bring her here.””
“She won’t come.””
Daniel looked at her.
“She will.””
“How?””
Daniel picked up the phone.
He typed a message.
Only one sentence.
*Tell me why Emily hid you from me.*
Ten minutes later, Victoria Black entered the prison.
Not as a prosecutor.
Not as a powerful attorney.
As a woman carrying years of regret.
She sat across from Daniel.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel said:
“You knew.””
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.””
“You knew I was innocent.””
“Yes.””
“And you still sent me here.””
A tear formed in her eye.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked away.
The answer hurt more than a lie.
“Why?””
Victoria took a deep breath.
“Because my father convinced me you killed my mother.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Your father.””
She closed her eyes.
“I spent years believing him.””
“And then?””
“Then I found the truth.””
Daniel looked at her.
“When?””
Victoria swallowed.
“Three years ago.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“Three years ago?””
“Yes.””
“You knew for three years?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
Victoria looked destroyed.
“I tried.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“No.””
He leaned forward.
“You didn’t try hard enough.””
Victoria accepted the words.
“You’re right.””
That surprised him.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Reed?””
“Yes.””
“Your own father?””
She nodded.
“He controlled everything.””
“How?””
Victoria looked at Rachel.
Then Torres.
Then back at Daniel.
“Because Thomas Reed wasn’t just corrupt.””
A pause.
“He was the person who created the entire case against you.””
Daniel already knew.
But hearing it still hurt.
Victoria continued.
“He manipulated evidence.””
“He pressured witnesses.””
“He changed timelines.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Because Emily found out he had been stealing money from Victor Hale’s company.””
Daniel remembered the warehouse.
The video.
The conversation.
“So he killed her.””
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Then Daniel asked:
“Why did Emily hide you from me?””
Victoria’s face changed.
Pain.
Deep pain.
“Because she knew if Reed discovered I existed…”
She stopped.
Daniel waited.
“He would use me against her.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why did you prosecute me?””
Victoria looked him directly in the eyes.
“Because Reed showed me evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“A recording.””
Daniel frowned.
“Of what?””
Victoria’s voice broke.
“Of Emily saying your name.””
Daniel went still.
“What?””
“She made me believe she blamed you.””
Rachel leaned forward.
“But it was fake.””
Victoria nodded.
“I know that now.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Where is the recording?””
Victoria looked terrified.
“Reed has it.””
“And Lily?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“He took her because he knows she has something.””
“The envelope.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stood.
“What is inside?””
Victoria whispered:
“The one thing my father has spent five years trying to destroy.””
“What?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Proof that Emily was alive after the time of death.””
Daniel froze.
Rachel looked at her.
“Another video?””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
She reached into her coat.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And placed a small object on the table.
A key.
Old.
Rusty.
With a tiny blue bird engraved on it.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?””
Victoria looked at him.
“My mother’s final secret.””
A pause.
“She didn’t hide the truth in the blue box.””
Daniel looked at the key.
“Then where?””
Victoria whispered:
“She hid it somewhere Thomas Reed would never search.””
Daniel picked up the key.
His fingers trembled.
“Where?””
Victoria looked toward the security camera.
Then lowered her voice.
“Inside the one place he believed Daniel Hayes would never return to.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Where?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Your old house.””
A silence followed.
Then every phone in the room rang at the same time.
Rachel answered first.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?””
Daniel watched her.
“Who is it?””
Rachel slowly lowered the phone.
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Thomas Reed.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did he say?””
Rachel looked at him.
“He wants to make a trade.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“For what?””
Rachel whispered:
“He wants the key.””
A pause.
“And he said if we don’t bring it…”
May you like
She looked down.
“…he will show us what really happened to Emily.””
