Chapter 8: The House of Secrets

Daniel Hayes had spent five years trying to escape the house.

Now he had to go back.

The place where his life ended.

The place where Emily was found.

The place where every piece of evidence had been arranged to make him look guilty.

And somewhere inside those walls was the truth Thomas Reed had spent years trying to bury.

Daniel stared at the small key sitting on the table.

A tiny blue bird engraved into the metal.

Emily’s symbol.

A symbol she had left behind for someone to find.

For him.

“She knew I would come back,” Daniel whispered.

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Victoria looked down.

“Because my mother always believed the truth had a way of surviving.””

Daniel almost smiled.

That sounded like Emily.

Even when everything was falling apart, she believed people could still choose the right thing.

But Daniel had learned a painful lesson.

The truth did not always win.

Sometimes it needed someone willing to fight for it.

Rachel picked up the phone.

“We need to know where Reed wants the exchange.””

A voice came through the speaker.

Cold.

Calm.

Familiar.

Thomas Reed.

“You already know where.””

Everyone in the room froze.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Reed.””

A small laugh came through the phone.

“Daniel Hayes.””

After five years, hearing that voice almost felt unreal.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You took my daughter.””

“No.””

Reed sounded almost offended.

“I protected her.””

“You kidnapped an eight-year-old child.””

“I saved her from the people who would use her.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

She looked away.

Reed continued.

“You have the key.””

Daniel remained silent.

“You have something that belongs to me.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Nothing belongs to you.””

A pause.

Then Reed said:

“You still sound exactly like Emily.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“Where is Lily?””

“You’ll see her when I get what I want.””

“And if I don’t?””

Another pause.

Then Reed answered quietly.

“Then Lily learns the same lesson your wife learned.””

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Rachel immediately ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Torres broke the silence.

“He’s desperate.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Desperate people are dangerous.””

Torres nodded.

“Exactly.””

Two hours later, they arrived at the old Hayes house.

The government had released Daniel temporarily under strict supervision because of the newly discovered evidence.

The media surrounded the property.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted.

But Daniel heard none of it.

All he saw was the front door.

The same door he walked through five years ago before his life changed forever.

Rachel stood beside him.

“You ready?””

Daniel looked at the house.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Good answer.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“People who think they’re ready usually miss something.””

Daniel looked back at the house.

“I missed everything last time.””

Rachel didn’t respond.

Because she knew he was right.

The front door opened.

The smell hit him first.

Dust.

Old wood.

Memories.

The house looked smaller than he remembered.

But the pain inside it felt larger.

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

The place where police officers had surrounded him.

The place where he had screamed Emily’s name.

The place where someone decided his future.

Victoria followed behind him.

Daniel noticed.

“You don’t have to be here.””

She looked at him.

“Yes, I do.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved through the house.

“Because this was my mother’s last battlefield.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

They moved room by room.

The kitchen.

The living room.

The stairs.

Everything looked untouched.

Like time had stopped.

Torres examined the walls.

“Emily was hiding something here.””

Daniel looked around.

“She would have used a place nobody would notice.””

Victoria nodded.

“That was always her way.””

Rachel looked at her.

“You knew her well.””

Victoria’s face softened.

“She raised me.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Victoria looked surprised.

Then she realized.

“You didn’t know.””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“My father took me away when I was young.””

“Thomas Reed?””

“Yes.””

“Then how did Emily raise you?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“Because she found me.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“After my father abandoned me, my mother found me again.””

A painful smile appeared.

“She spent years trying to fix the damage he caused.””

Daniel looked around the house.

“So she was protecting both of you.””

Victoria nodded.

“She protected everyone.””

Then Daniel noticed something.

A mark on the wall.

Near the staircase.

A tiny blue bird.

Almost invisible.

He stepped closer.

“Here.””

Everyone gathered around.

Daniel touched the symbol.

The paint around it looked slightly different.

Someone had covered it.

Rachel examined the wall.

“There’s something behind this.””

Torres searched nearby.

Then he found a small opening.

A hidden compartment.

Inside was an old envelope.

Daniel reached for it.

His hands shook.

The handwriting.

Emily.

Again.

But this time, the envelope had a name written on it.

*Daniel.*

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

A letter written before Emily died.

Daniel began reading.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then everything I feared happened.

His breathing changed.

Rachel watched him.

They will tell you I betrayed you.

They will tell you I was afraid of you.

They will tell you I wanted you punished.

Please don’t believe them.

Daniel closed his eyes.

A tear slipped down.

The night I died, I was trying to expose Thomas Reed.

But I made one mistake.

I trusted the wrong person.

Daniel stopped.

Victoria looked nervous.

Rachel whispered:

Daniel continued.

Thomas was not working alone.

The room went silent.

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Nobody moved.

He read the next line.

There is someone else who helped him.

His hands tightened around the paper.

Someone I thought would protect our family.

A cold feeling spread through Daniel.

He kept reading.

Daniel, if they arrest you, it means they already convinced someone close to us to lie.

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Close to us?””

Daniel looked at the letter.

The next sentence was underlined.

The person who will testify against you is not the person you should fear most.

A sound came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A car door slammed.

Torres moved toward the window.

“There’s someone here.””

Daniel folded the letter.

“Reed?””

Torres looked outside.

Then froze.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Torres slowly backed away from the window.

“It’s someone else.””

Rachel looked outside.

A black vehicle had stopped in front of the house.

A person stepped out.

Daniel couldn’t see the face.

Not yet.

Then the person entered the front yard.

And Daniel saw who it was.

His heart dropped.

Because the person standing outside was someone who had been helping him uncover the truth.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who should not have been there.

Victoria looked at Daniel.

Her face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel stared through the window.

“What?””

Victoria whispered:

“He died five years ago.””

The front door opened.

Slowly.

A man stepped inside.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Detective Alan Pierce.

The investigator who supposedly died three years earlier.

The man whose signature appeared on the impossible report.

He looked at Daniel.

Then he smiled.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel felt the entire world shift.

“You’re alive.””

Pierce nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Pierce looked at the letter in Daniel’s hand.

“Because Emily knew the truth would eventually lead you here.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“Where is my daughter?””

Pierce’s expression changed.

For the first time, Daniel saw real fear.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

Pierce looked toward the hallway.

“He doesn’t have Lily anymore.””

Daniel froze.

“What do you mean?””

Pierce lowered his voice.

“Thomas Reed was never the final person you needed to find.””

A silence followed.

Then Pierce said:

“He was only protecting the person who gave the orders.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Pierce looked at Victoria.

Then at the letter.

Then back at Daniel.

“The person who destroyed your family was someone Emily trusted more than anyone.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Pierce whispered:

“The person who was supposed to be protecting Lily from the beginning.””

The house became completely silent.

And then Daniel heard a phone ringing upstairs.

A phone that had not worked in five years.

A phone that should not have had power.

Rachel answered it.

Her face changed.

Because the voice on the other end was not Thomas Reed.

It was Lily.

And she was crying.

“Daddy…”

Daniel rushed toward the phone.

“Lily?””

Her voice trembled.

“Daddy, I found out who killed Mommy.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

A pause.

May you like

Then his daughter whispered:

“But you’re not going to believe who it was.””
