Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
The phone kept ringing.
A small sound.
A normal sound.
But inside that room, it felt impossible.
Because the name on the screen belonged to a man who was supposed to be dead.
Alexander Pierce.
My biological father.
The man who had spent three years hiding.
The man whose letters had changed everything I believed about my life.
The man whose secrets had dragged every person in the room into a war none of us understood.
Nobody moved.
Not Declan.
Not Adrian.
Not my mother.
Not Ethan.
Everyone was waiting for someone else to make the first choice.
Finally, I stepped forward.
“Answer it.””
Declan looked at me.
“Grace.””
“Answer it.””
His expression tightened.
“You don’t know who’s on the other side.””
I looked at the phone.
“That’s the point.””
My whole life, people had decided what I could handle.
What I should know.
What truths were too painful.
I was finished being protected from reality.
Declan picked up the phone.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a voice.
“Declan.””
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
Not from memory.
From the recordings.
The letters.
The pieces of a man I had spent years grieving.
My father.
Declan closed his eyes.
“Alexander.””
Everyone in the room stopped breathing.
My mother covered her mouth.
Adrian looked away.
Even Ethan looked shaken.
“You took too long,” my father said.
Declan stared at the phone.
“You’re alive.””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“Yes.””
The simplicity of the answer almost hurt.
After all the secrets.
After all the pain.
He said it like it was nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Dad?””
The line went silent.
Then:
“Grace.””
My eyes filled instantly.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
Because hearing him say my name reminded me of everything I had lost.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
My anger returned.
Of course.
Another secret.
“Of course you can’t.””
“Grace—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t get to disappear for three years and still decide what I deserve to know.””
Silence.
Then my father said something I didn’t expect.
“You’re right.””
I stopped.
He continued.
“I was wrong.””
The room went still.
My father had never been a man who apologized easily.
Not in my memories.
Not in the stories people told about him.
But now?
He sounded tired.
“Your entire life, I made decisions because I thought I was protecting you.””
His voice lowered.
“But I forgot something important.””
“What?””
“That protecting someone doesn’t mean taking away their choices.””
I looked down.
Because those were the exact words I had been feeling all day.
Everyone had loved me.
Everyone had protected me.
And somehow, everyone had hurt me.
“Why did you leave?””
The question came out softer.
The line remained quiet.
Then:
“Because Adrian found the truth before I did.””
Everyone looked at Adrian.
His face changed.
“What truth?”” I asked.
My father answered:
“The truth about who was controlling the company attacks.””
My eyes moved toward my mother.
Then Ethan.
Then Declan.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then my father said:
“The person who taught us all to look in the wrong direction.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Before my father answered, Adrian stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He looked at the phone.
“You don’t get to do this.””
Declan’s face hardened.
“Adrian.””
“No.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You want to tell her now?””
My father’s voice became cold.
“Adrian, don’t.””
That reaction told me everything.
“Both of you know.””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Declan.
“What is happening?””
Declan looked at his brother.
Then at me.
“I need to explain.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“My father had two sons.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“After Alexander built Pierce Global Holdings, he created a succession plan.””
“For you?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“And Adrian?””
Declan’s expression darkened.
“Adrian believed he deserved control.””
Adrian laughed.
“Believed?””
He stepped forward.
“I was the first son.””
Declan looked at him.
“You were the first mistake.””
The words landed like a punch.
Adrian’s face changed.
My mother whispered:
“Declan…”
But it was too late.
The anger between the brothers had finally surfaced.
“I spent my entire life watching him choose you,” Adrian said.
Declan shook his head.
“That wasn’t about you.””
“Everything was about you.””
“No.””
Declan’s voice became louder.
“It was about what you did.””
I looked between them.
“What did he do?””
Nobody answered.
Again.
The same silence.
The same pattern.
I walked toward them.
“No.””
They stopped.
“I am done watching everyone decide when I’m ready for the truth.””
My voice shook.
“But I am ready now.””
Adrian stared at me.
Then slowly smiled.
“You really are his daughter.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Alexander.””
He looked at the phone.
“She has your stubbornness.””
My father didn’t respond.
Adrian looked down.
“The first company attack wasn’t supposed to hurt Alexander.””
“Then what was it supposed to do?””
He looked at me.
“Force him to reveal you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Your father hid you because your existence changed everything.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Adrian walked closer.
“When Alexander found out you existed, he changed his entire inheritance plan.””
“Why?””
“Because he realized the empire he built was destroying the people around him.””
I stared.
“He wanted to leave it?””
“Yes.””
That surprised me.
“Then why didn’t he?””
“Because people around him didn’t want him to.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
My husband went pale.
“No.””
My heart dropped.
“Ethan?””
He immediately shook his head.
“Grace, no.””
Adrian smiled.
“Your husband wasn’t the mastermind.””
A small relief.
Then:
“But he was the perfect tool.””
Ethan looked down.
Because he knew.
“What did you do?””
His voice was barely audible.
“I was trying to save my family.””
I stared.
“By destroying mine?””
He closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know how deep it went.””
“You always say that.””
A tear appeared in his eyes.
“I know.””
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered Vanessa.
The documents.
The lies.
The months of betrayal.
“You chose.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Because it was the first honest thing he had said.
My father spoke again.
“Grace.””
I looked at the phone.
“The person behind all of this is coming for you.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
The line became silent.
Then:
“Someone you already know.””
I looked around the room.
My mother.
Ethan.
Declan.
Adrian.
Everyone I knew.
Everyone who had lied.
Everyone who had secrets.
Then the front door opened.
Slowly.
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped inside.
Elegant.
Calm.
Not afraid.
Not surprised.
She looked at me like she had been waiting years for this moment.
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew her.
Everyone did.
My mother whispered:
“No.””
Ethan stepped back.
“Impossible.””
Declan’s face changed completely.
And Adrian looked terrified.
The woman smiled.
“Hello, Grace.””
My hands went numb.
Because the woman standing in front of me was someone who had attended my wedding.
Someone who had held my baby shower invitation.
Someone who had spent years pretending to love my family.
But the most terrifying part wasn’t that she was alive.
It was that everyone else seemed more afraid of her than they were of anything else.
She looked around the room.
Then at me.
“I think it’s time you met the person who started all of this.””
May you like
She smiled.
“Your grandmother.””
