Chapter 5: The Enemy Who Came To Save Me

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not because we didn’t know what to do.

Because we couldn’t believe what we were seeing.

The person standing outside the glass doors was someone I had trusted.

Someone who had spent the last several hours telling me they were protecting me.

Someone who had looked me in the eyes and promised they knew the truth.

Declan Pierce.

The billionaire CEO.

The man my father had chosen.

The man who had brought me evidence.

The man who had convinced me that everyone around me had secrets.

And now he stood outside the villa.

Holding a gun.

My first thought was not fear.

It was confusion.

Because my brain couldn’t accept that the person who had uncovered the betrayal could also be the betrayal.

The rain poured down around him.

His navy suit was soaked.

His expression was unreadable.

But his eyes…

His eyes looked like someone who had already accepted that I would hate him.

“Declan,” I whispered.

Ethan immediately stepped in front of me.

For once, I didn’t hate that he did.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

I almost laughed.

The irony was almost too much.

The man who had betrayed me was suddenly trying to protect me.

The man I thought I could trust was standing outside with a weapon.

My entire life had become impossible.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Grace, don’t move.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She stared at Declan through the glass.

Because she knew something.

Again.

Everyone knew something.

Except me.

Declan slowly raised his free hand.

The gun remained pointed toward the ground.

“Grace.””

His voice carried through the glass doors.

“Open the door.””

Nobody answered.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You’ve got some nerve.””

Declan looked at him.

“Move away from her.””

The words were calm.

But they carried a warning.

Ethan stepped closer to the door.

“You lied to her.””

Declan didn’t react.

“So did you.””

The sentence hit Ethan harder than any insult could have.

Because it was true.

My husband looked at me.

“Grace, listen to me.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Please.””

“No more.””

My voice shook.

“No more people telling me to listen while they hide things from me.””

I walked toward the door.

Everyone reacted.

“Grace!”” my mother shouted.

“Don’t,” Ethan said.

But I kept walking.

Because something inside me had changed.

A few hours ago, I would have waited for someone else to tell me what was happening.

Now?

I needed to see.

I needed answers.

I opened the door.

The wind rushed inside.

Declan lowered the gun immediately.

His eyes met mine.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.

Not for himself.

For me.

“Why?”” I asked.

One word.

A thousand meanings.

Why the gun?

Why the lies?

Why did my father trust you?

Why did I trust you?

Declan swallowed.

“Because someone else is here.””

I looked around.

“What?””

His eyes moved past me.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who discovered the truth.””

The rain hit the ground harder.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the person who sent that message wants you to think I’m the threat.””

I stared at him.

“And you expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

His answer surprised me.

“I expect you to remember something.””

“What?””

“You have spent your entire life believing the person who speaks calmly is telling the truth.””

His eyes moved toward Ethan.

“Your husband proved that wasn’t always true.””

Then toward my mother.

“Your mother proved that wasn’t always true.””

Then back to me.

“So don’t believe me because I sound convincing.””

A pause.

“Believe me because of what I do next.””

Before I could respond, the lights went out.

The entire villa disappeared into darkness.

Someone screamed.

Glass shattered.

And then everything happened at once.

A shadow moved.

A loud crash came from the hallway.

My mother grabbed me.

Ethan pushed forward.

“Get down!””

I dropped instinctively.

A second later, something hit the wall above us.

Not a bullet.

A piece of broken wood.

Someone had thrown it through the window.

The emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dim.

Terrifying.

And Declan was no longer outside.

He was inside.

Standing between me and the broken window.

The gun was raised.

But not at us.

At the person running through the hallway.

A man wearing black.

The stranger stopped.

Declan shouted:

“Don’t move!””

The man smiled.

A cold, familiar smile.

Then he said:

“You still protect her?””

Declan froze.

I noticed.

That one sentence changed everything.

Because whoever this man was…

Declan knew him.

The stranger looked at me.

“Grace.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled.

“Because your father spent years trying to keep you away from me.””

My mother gasped.

“No.””

The stranger looked at her.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

My mother stepped back.

Like she had seen a ghost.

“You.””

I looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

The stranger laughed quietly.

“That’s the problem with families like yours.””

He took one step forward.

“You spend so much time hiding the truth that eventually nobody knows who the villains are anymore.””

Declan kept the gun aimed.

“Leave.””

The stranger ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Your father told you everyone betrayed you.””

My fingers tightened.

“Yes.””

“He was wrong.””

I stared.

“Then who did?””

The stranger smiled.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

“No.””

The man tilted his head.

“You still believe him?””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t know him.””

“I knew him better than anyone.””

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

And then he said a name.

A name that made my mother cover her mouth.

A name that made Ethan step back.

A name I had never heard before.

“Adrian Calloway.””

Ethan went pale.

My eyes moved to my husband.

“Calloway?””

The stranger smiled.

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What does he mean?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

The worst answer.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“I can explain.””

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Who is he?””

Ethan looked at the stranger.

Then at me.

Finally, he whispered:

“My brother.””

The room went completely still.

I stared at Ethan.

“You have a brother?””

Adrian laughed.

“Not just a brother.””

He stepped closer.

“The brother he erased.””

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Stop.””

“Why?””

Adrian smiled.

“Afraid she’ll learn what you did?””

My heart began racing.

“What did he do?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian looked at me.

“Your husband didn’t marry you because he loved you.””

Ethan shouted:

“Enough!””

But Adrian continued.

“He married you because of your father’s company.””

I looked at Ethan.

“No.””

My voice was barely audible.

“Grace—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t explain.””

Because I already knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

Adrian looked satisfied.

“Now you understand.””

I turned toward Declan.

“Did you know?””

His silence was immediate.

And that was worse than anything.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer broke something in me.

“How long?””

“From the beginning.””

I stared at him.

“From the beginning?””

He lowered his gun.

“I knew Ethan’s family history before I met you.””

“And you still let me trust him?””

Declan looked away.

“My father asked me to watch over you.””

“Watch?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean spy.””

“Grace—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I’m done.””

The word echoed.

Because I meant it.

I was done being the person everyone protected by lying to.

I was done being the last person to know the truth about my own life.

Then Adrian reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And threw it onto the table.

It landed beside my father’s letter.

“This is why your father disappeared.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

Adrian smiled.

“The last thing he left behind.””

Declan’s face changed.

For the first time all night, he looked genuinely terrified.

“Grace.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“Don’t open that.””

My heart stopped.

Because Declan Pierce had faced everything tonight without fear.

Not my anger.

Not Ethan.

Not even the man with the weapon.

But that envelope?

That scared him.

I slowly walked toward the table.

Everyone watched.

My hand reached out.

I touched the envelope.

And on the front, written in my father’s handwriting, were four words:

*The truth about Grace.*

I opened it.

And inside was a birth certificate.

Not mine.

Someone else’s.

A certificate that proved the person I thought was my father…

Was not my biological father.

May you like

And beneath the name of my real father was the one name I never expected to see.

Pierce.
