Chapter 2: The Billionaire’s Offer

I used to think the worst moment of my marriage was discovering the affair.

I was wrong.

The affair was only the beginning.

The real betrayal was waiting inside a stack of documents.

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

The company my father built.

The company I inherited.

The company Ethan spent years telling me he wanted to help protect.

He was selling pieces of it behind my back.

My hand moved over my stomach.

The baby kicked again.

A strange thing happened then.

I stopped feeling broken.

I started feeling awake.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Declan pulled out the chair across from me and sat down.

For the first time since meeting him, his expression softened.

“Your husband has been moving assets for months.””

“How?””

“Through a series of private agreements. Small enough not to trigger immediate attention.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She wasn’t just his affair partner.””

I looked at him.

“What was she?””

Declan opened another folder.

“The person managing the transactions.””

The room felt colder.

All those moments.

All those times Vanessa asked about my company.

All those conversations where she acted interested in my father’s legacy.

They weren’t friendship.

They were research.

“She was studying me,” I whispered.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

The humiliation hurt worse than the anger.

Because I had invited her into my home.

I had trusted her.

Declan watched me carefully.

“You need to understand something, Grace. Ethan didn’t come to this island because he wanted a romantic escape.””

“Then why?””

“Because he believed you would be too emotional to notice what he was doing.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Too emotional.

That was what Ethan always called me.

Sensitive.

Gentle.

Easy to convince.

I stood up.

“He underestimated me.””

Declan didn’t disagree.

“No,” he said.

“He did.””

I walked toward the window.

The ocean stretched endlessly ahead.

A few days ago, I thought my biggest problem was saving my marriage.

Now I realized I had been trying to save something that had already been destroyed.

A knock interrupted us.

Declan looked toward the door.

“Expecting someone?””

“No.””

The door opened before either of us moved.

Ethan stood there.

His face changed when he saw Declan.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Pierce.””

Declan stood.

“Calloway.””

Ethan looked between us.

“What is he doing here?””

I smiled slightly.

The first real smile I had given all day.

“That’s interesting.””

“What?””

“You came here to ask me questions.””

I stepped closer.

“But you didn’t ask why I’m with him.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Grace, this man is dangerous.””

Declan raised an eyebrow.

“Dangerous?””

“Yes. You don’t know what he wants.””

I looked at my husband.

The irony almost made me laugh.

“You’re worried about what he wants?””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Grace, please. Come home with me.””

Home.

That word used to mean something.

Now it sounded like a place I had escaped.

“You mean come home and pretend this didn’t happen?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

Ethan had prepared excuses.

He had prepared apologies.

But he had not prepared for me to stop needing him.

“I made mistakes,” he finally said.

I stared at him.

“Mistakes?””

“Yes.””

“Ethan, forgetting an anniversary is a mistake.””

My voice grew quieter.

“Choosing another woman. Lying to me. Taking my company. Those are decisions.””

His face changed.

A tiny crack.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I nodded.

“You’re right.””

I picked up the folder from the table.

“I don’t understand how someone who promised to protect me decided I was the easiest person to betray.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan looked at Declan.

“This is your influence, isn’t it?””

Declan remained calm.

“No.””

“Then why is she suddenly acting like this?””

Declan looked at him.

“Because she finally has the information you hid.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you’re getting involved in.””

Declan smiled slightly.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

He placed a document on the table.

A single page.

Ethan saw it.

And the color drained from his face.

“What is that?””

I looked at Declan.

He answered before I could.

“The agreement that proves Ethan never owned the company he tried to sell.””

Ethan went completely still.

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

The name on the screen made him freeze.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“Vanessa?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“What do you mean you can’t?””

Silence.

His grip tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

Then Ethan looked at me.

Not angry.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

Because whatever Vanessa had just told him had changed everything.

He lowered the phone slowly.

“Grace…”

I stared at him.

“What?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Vanessa wasn’t working with me.””

I felt my heart stop.

“Then who was she working for?””

Ethan looked at the document in my hand.

Then at Declan.

And finally back at me.

“She was sent here to destroy all of us.””

Before I could respond, Declan’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression turned serious.

A name appeared.

A name that made even him go silent.

Because the person calling was the one person none of us expected.

May you like

My father.

Who had been dead for three years.
