Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew
There are moments when your entire life separates into two versions.
The life before the truth.
And the life after.
I stared at the document in my hands, but the words refused to become real.
The paper was old.
The ink was faded.
The signature at the bottom was clear.
My name.
My date of birth.
And the name of the man listed as my biological father.
Alexander Pierce.
Declan Pierce’s father.
The same man who built the foundation of Pierce Global Holdings.
The same man who was considered one of the most powerful businessmen in America before his death.
The same family that owned one of the largest corporate empires in the world.
I looked up slowly.
Declan was watching me.
And for the first time since I met him, he had no answers.
No carefully chosen words.
No calm explanation.
Just silence.
“No.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“No, this is fake.””
Nobody responded.
That scared me more.
I turned toward Adrian.
“You made this.””
He smiled slightly.
“You think I forged a birth certificate just to hurt you?””
“Yes.””
The answer came quickly.
Because I needed it to be true.
I needed someone to be lying.
I needed one person in this room to have done something simple.
Something understandable.
But Adrian didn’t look offended.
He looked sad.
“That’s exactly why your father hid the truth.””
“My father?””
I laughed.
“Which one?””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But nobody blamed me.
Because nobody in that room had the right to.
My mother looked like she wanted to speak.
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Grace…”
“Did you know?””
A long pause.
Then she nodded.
The answer destroyed me more than anything else.
My mother knew.
Of course she knew.
Everyone knew.
I was the only stranger in my own life.
“How long?””
She looked down.
“Since the day you were born.””
The room felt colder.
“You knew my entire life?””
“Yes.””
“You knew who my real father was?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe I was Thomas Hart’s daughter?””
My mother flinched at my father’s name.
The man who raised me.
The man I had buried.
The man whose last letter had warned me about betrayal.
“I loved Thomas,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“It doesn’t.””
She sat down.
“My marriage to Thomas was complicated.””
I looked away.
I didn’t want another story.
Another explanation.
Another hidden piece of history.
But my mother continued.
“Before you were born, I met Alexander Pierce.””
Declan’s expression changed.
My mother noticed.
“Yes,” she said quietly.
“Your father and I were young. We made mistakes.””
She looked at me.
“But you were never a mistake.””
That sentence hurt.
Because part of me had wondered.
Had everyone hidden me because I was something shameful?
“No,” I whispered.
“You don’t get to say that and make everything okay.””
“I know.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
A silence followed.
Then Declan spoke.
“Alexander never knew about you.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“My father didn’t know he had a daughter.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Because Thomas made sure he never found out.””
I turned.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian leaned against the wall.
“It means your entire identity was built on a lie.””
Declan’s eyes hardened.
“Adrian.””
“What?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Are you going to pretend you don’t know?””
Declan didn’t answer.
And that silence told me enough.
“Tell me.””
Declan looked at me.
“Grace.””
“Tell me.””
His jaw tightened.
“My father was investigating Thomas Hart.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed Thomas was involved in financial crimes connected to both companies.””
I looked at my mother.
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know.””
Declan nodded.
“I believe you.””
I looked at him.
“You believe her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Alexander did.””
The answer stopped me.
Declan looked at the birth certificate.
“My father spent years trying to uncover what happened.””
“To what?””
“To the money. The companies. The missing investments.””
He paused.
“And then he discovered something worse.””
“What?””
Declan looked directly at me.
“Thomas wasn’t only stealing from the company.””
My stomach tightened.
“He was stealing from you.””
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
Declan walked to the table.
He opened the folder.
Inside were financial records.
Accounts.
Transfers.
My name appeared on several pages.
“This was your inheritance.””
I stared.
“My inheritance?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
“Alexander.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Declan nodded.
“Yes.””
“He died before he knew me.””
“He didn’t know you existed.””
The words landed heavily.
“But he created a trust before he died.””
“Why?””
“Because he suspected Thomas was hiding something.””
I looked at the papers.
“And Thomas took it?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Declan’s expression darkened.
“By becoming your legal guardian after your mother married him.””
My breath caught.
Thomas.
The man I called Dad.
The man who taught me everything.
The man whose picture sat beside my bed until I was twenty-five.
He wasn’t my biological father.
But he was still my father.
And now I had to question everything.
Every memory.
Every lesson.
Every moment.
“Was any of it real?”” I whispered.
My mother immediately answered.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“Then why does it feel like my entire life was fake?””
She had no answer.
Nobody did.
Then Ethan spoke.
Quietly.
“Because you’re finally seeing what we saw.””
I turned toward him.
My anger returned instantly.
“What?””
He looked exhausted.
“Grace, listen.””
“No.””
“I know how this looks.””
I almost smiled.
“How it looks?””
I walked toward him.
“You lied about an affair.””
He lowered his eyes.
“You lied about my company.””
“I know.””
“You knew about my father.””
“I know.””
“You knew about me.””
His face changed.
That was the first time he looked truly ashamed.
“I didn’t know about you.””
“You knew enough.””
He didn’t argue.
That was worse.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Ethan was never supposed to be involved this deeply.””
Ethan glared.
“Stop talking.””
“No.””
Adrian smiled.
“You spent years pretending you were the victim.””
He looked at me.
“But the truth is, Ethan was recruited.””
My heart sank.
“Recruited?””
Declan answered.
“By the same people trying to control the company.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Is that true?””
He looked away.
And that was when I knew.
The affair.
The documents.
The lies.
They weren’t separate.
They were all connected.
“Why me?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
“Why did everyone choose me?””
Declan looked at me.
“Because you were the one person nobody could control.””
I laughed.
“That’s funny.””
“What?””
“Because everyone controlled me.””
Declan’s expression softened.
“Not anymore.””
Before I could respond, the sound of sirens echoed in the distance.
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked toward the window.
“No.””
Declan immediately moved.
“What?””
“They found us.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at me.
And for the first time, he looked afraid.
“The people who killed Alexander Pierce.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly the secrets, the lies, the inheritance…
None of it mattered.
Not if the people behind everything were still out there.
Declan grabbed the documents.
“We need to leave.””
My mother stood.
“Where?””
“Somewhere they can’t track us.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You think there’s anywhere left?””
Declan looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Declan looked at me.
And I knew before he spoke.
Because everyone had been protecting something.
Something my father had left behind.
Something powerful enough that people were willing to destroy families for it.
“Grace has to go to the one place nobody would ever think to look.””
I stared at him.
“Where?””
Declan hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father’s old house.””
I froze.
“My father’s house burned down.””
Declan looked at me.
“No.””
The sirens grew louder.
“He wanted everyone to think it did.””
He handed me the envelope.
“And inside that house is the final thing Alexander Pierce left for you.””
I looked at the birth certificate.
Then at Declan.
Then at Ethan.
A man who betrayed me.
A man who protected me.
A family full of secrets.
And a father who had been hiding the truth even from death.
As we rushed toward the exit, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*If you go to that house, you’ll finally learn why your father chose Thomas Hart to raise you.*
I stopped walking.
Because beneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph of my father.
Standing in front of the house.
Holding a baby.
Holding me.
And beside him…
Was Thomas Hart.
My real father.
And Alexander Pierce.
Both smiling.
Both alive.
And both knowing the secret they buried before I was old enough to remember.
The truth was waiting for me.
May you like
But I had no idea whether it would set me free…
Or destroy everything I had left.
